How to increase user activity on website?

I started an online community focusing on a specific niche. i have been working on SEO and bookmarking like crazy and ppl are finally going to my site and registering. the problem is they sign up (maybe for the free ebook i offer) but then most hardly come back. how do i get them to come again? there's forums, polls, blogs, video, basically everything a social network has. where do i focus? do i hire some off-shore ppl to be active on the site?

i blog almost every day and invite comments but no one comments. do i write on their walls? how do i encourage them to invite other ppl?

any advice would be greatly appreciated. =)

Register some fake usernames and post comments to your blog entries yourself. Have the fake users have a conversation amongst themselves. Post controversial posts/discussions.
Offer a prize (better avatar, more pm storage) for the best post in a week. Send out email newsletter to members, encourage them to come back. Give them a great reason to come back and contribute. Communities are notoriously difficult to get off the ground. It takes a lot of work.
When they do take off they can then become very difficult to control! gl.

If your site is really new than maybe all you need to do is wait a bit? The longer it's active the more people should join, and then eventually you'll get comments. Or maybe you could just try to entice people with more prizes, haha!

You may have spam problems.. But find a way around it if you are really into a community - People like to see their comments after they post.

Creating some fake ID's specially of girl and using them for activity, it's always works. Comment on post your user has posted ... or simply you can comment on their wall...Send them request.
