Default Psy Makes $8.1 Million By Ignoring Copyright Infringements Of Gangnam Style

This is yet another great example of how artists can give away copies of their music and videos to build their reputations and then earn significant sums by selling associated scarcities -- in this case, appearances in TV commercials.

OK, first up just let me say I'm a filthy pirate - I pay for almost nothing if I can help it unless it makes me money (or I'm losing it because i don't buy it - you get the idea). But I try not to live in a world of self-delusion either.

I refuse to live in the idiotic self-serving wonderland that a large portion of the "information deserves to be free", "the internet is going to make artists rich by everyone getting product for nothing", "artists can use their own distribution channels" set has constructed for themselves - it's simply horseshit constructed out of hype that's spread around a large echo chamber of blogs and other outlets, no personal offense meant to you sir.

This set of people have a sort of zealotry that's sometimes displayed by religious people regarding this idealogy based around networking aand like most ideologies no attention is paid to anything that is evidence against it, a great deal of fuss is made of anything that does support it and two realities exist simultaneously in some people's minds. For example some people point out that pirates buy more media than non-pirates (according to some studies but let's assume this to be true) - by their own reasoning the piracy is not making money, theyre still going out and buying it.

Contrary to what these tech evangelists say and "information deserves to be free" types say, those who are actually in the music industry primarily go with Music Labels because they get a better deal than from anywhere else. I know this goes directly against the holy words of Tech Crunch - who somehow are experts on music despite not being involved in the industry themselves and by their own admission know better than people who are musicians (you know, like the musicians are retards). But here you go:

http://www.theregister.co.uk/2012/06...usic_business/ <- this is written by a man who is a musician and advocates for them.

Oh and look: http://thetrichordist.com/2012/04/15...oss-full-post/ <- some else in the music industry explaining how musicians are worse off with Google, iTunes etc and in fact they are ensuring that the rate of new music being produced is slowing. You know, because they don't do what all labels do - advance people money to make music at considerable risk of losing the money.

And yes, I know Techcrunch and a thousand other outlets has articles - after article after article refuting this... the internet echo chamber remember - where every tech evangelist confirms their own beliefs, mainly because a few people want to get very wealthy indeed and don't give a shit about music perse. They'll point out rare instances where people have beaten the odds and become stars or some level of success whilst completely ignoring the preponderance of evidence that shows this isn't true most of the time. That's confirmation bias for you isn't it.

Oh and BTW the statement "Psy makes $8.1 million dollars by ignoring copyright infringement" is just silly. It's a lazy correlation that doesn't have anything to do with how the money was earnt. If you don't think so please go ahead and provide more examples of people who "made millions by ignoring infringement" and also explain how the thousands and thousand of other people did not ignore copyright infringement made millions of dollars. The former group is literally a handful of people, not exactly a correlation that inspires confidence in that conclusion.

Like I said, I'm a pirate, I think of myself as someone who ignores copyright and possibly avoids giving money to the content owner: I don't delude myself in the tech evangelist wonderland, the majority of whom arent even in the music industry.

In conclusion to this rant (sorry I got a bit carried away) the real reason I'm against the tech evangelists is because of the "information deserves to be free and owned by no one" crowd. Briefly the implication of this is information has no owner, therefore the individual does not own their own information - which means the individual does not have a right to privacy since you do not own any information that pertains to you as an individual. But that's another discussion. Just saying: when it comes to what's good for musicians, film makers and all other artists how about listening to, I don't know - THEM, rather than Google funded lobbyists and people living in a fairy wonderland and proclaiming that networking and IT infrastructure is good for musicians. If you read the two articles above you'll see the reasoning.
