Google has just recently launched it's new social
network called Google Plus.
And while everyone and their pet chicken has been raving
about this new platform - I want to tell you why I just
flushed it down the toilet!
I hope Matt Cutts doesn't read this
But I can't hold these feelings in any longer.
So far, Google has a terrible track record inside the social
media game. In fact, they've literally created a body trail
of dead ideas in their wake - Google wave, Buzz, Voice,
Orkut, etc...
I read an article yesterday that talked about nine reasons
why Google+ beats Facebook.
Are you joking?
Personally, I would have been embarrassed to write that on
my website or to be heard saying something so ridiculous.
Aunt Sally is NOT going to be migrating from Facebook to
Google Plus.
There is no competition here.
It's just way too easy for Facebook to counter attack.
And let's face it, we need another social network like we need
another brand of toilet paper.
In fact, a number of my good marketing friends have already
STOPPED using Google Plus. Maybe they realized what a giant
waste of time it was.
Because if you've spent over 5 minutes on Google Plus - you've
already wasted a short span of your life.
But here's the REAL point of this big ranting email...
The point here isn't even "Google Plus".
You see, Google Plus is just one of MANY distractions that
will be coming down the pipeline.
ONE of the hundreds of shiny objects that are placed
in front of us on a daily basis.
TESTING our will power, discipline, and persistence.
You could easily spend an hour a day in Google+ without
even thinking about it.
Think about all the times you've been browsing a forum
and lost all track of time.
Or the last time you got stuck in that dreaded OCD loop -
checking your email, checking your stats, checking the forum,
wasting your time and running around like a chicken with
it's head cut off.
That kind of marketing crack is hard to quit.
But as an entrepreneur, TIME is one of your greatest assets.
With that hour you just lost, you COULD have been actively
GROWING your business...
* Writing a guest post for a major blog within your industry.
* Sending out personalized videos to potential affiliates.
* Writing a kick-butt email to your subscribers.
* Creating a new product.
* Improving conversions by setting up some simple a/b split tests.
* Improving your sales funnel - adding an order page bump,
upsell, exit offer, etc...(any of these will INSTANTLY increase
your epc.)
* Sending out personalized thank-you notes to all of your
top affiliates.
* Setting up an ad swap to build your subscriber list.
* Purchasing some targeted advertising (i.e. solo ads, banner
ads, paid blog reviews, etc...)
* Adding value in your favorite forum and driving traffic
through your signature file.
* Submitting a top-notch article to OTHER newsletters within
your market.
* Creating exclusive content for someone else's membership
site - with links pointing back to your web site.
* Conducting a content-packed webinar for someone ELSE's
subscribers - which in turn also builds YOUR list.
(using something like WebinarOptin.com or WebinarBridge.com)
* etc...etc...etc...
I can think of about a 100 more worthwhile things you COULD
be doing instead of playing around with Google Plus or any
other new whiz bang gizmo of the week.
Pablo Picasso once said that "Action is the foundational
key to all success."
But I would say that...
"Focused, STRATEGIC action is the key to all success."
You do NOT need a massive IQ to succeed online.
What you need is unstoppable determination, persistence, and
some good 'ol stubbornness.
It's NOT going to be easy - although many marketers would
like to lead you to believe that.
It's going to require bucket fulls of elbow grease.
But it's definitely a TON of fun and better than any JOB
I've ever seen
And quite frankly, running your own business also has a
lot more security than a J.O.B.
But most people simply aren't willing to take that kind
of responsibility.
Jobs are cushy.
They're 9 to 5.
Running your own business could be 8am to 8pm or 5pm to 3am.
But most people aren't even willing to give up watching
their favorite 'American Idol' in exchange for building
a successful, long-term business.
They'd rather talk about. Dream about it. Instead of actually
getting off their butt and doing it.
But for those who are willing to take up the challenge.
It is hands-down THE most exciting journey you will ever take.
Speak Soon,
Kim
