I've hit a wall with Twitter

tl;dr: I can't follow more than 2700 people on Twitter. I currently have 2480 followers. What am I doing wrong? How do I fix this?

The details:

I have been using TweetAttacks to build up a Twitter following over the past 1-2 months. I've been cautious about following people to avoid a ban, and had been following/unfollowing 200-250 people a day up until I hit this limit. I had heard about the official 2000 following limit, but managed to snag 2000 followers to get past it without any problems.

Once I got past that magic number of 2000 followers, I started having trouble. I could only add a hundred people or less (usually less) before getting the "You've reached the maximum limit" message. Today, I was only able to add 26 followers. 26! For reference, my exact numbers are 2732 following, 2484 followers (yes, I know I should unfollow some people, but I use the TweetAttacks default two-day wait period before unfollowing them).

What am I doing wrong? I see average people, i.e. non-celebrities and non-businesses, who follow tens of thousands of people and have tens of thousands of followers. How do they accomplish this without hitting limits? How can I get past this damn limit? How can I build up a Twitter following quickly? I'm not looking for bot suggestions or "how to get followers guides"; it's just that at this current rate, it's going to take several weeks to add another thousand people and I'd like to avoid this.

add real tweets, add rss from your blog, no more than 3 posts per day, add retweets of random people posting quotes. go on to tweepi, toast anyone who isn't following. adjust your bio, to have keywords directly related to your niche, in a non-spammy way.

After you hit the mark of following 2,000 people, Twitter sets a 10% limit. You're allowed to follow 10% over the number of people following you. Since you have 2,482 followers: 2,482 + 10% = 2,730. In order to follow more people, you need more people following you.

Thanks, this certainly explains a lot!

Of course, you can always unfollow people who aren't following you, too. That will give you room to play with to start following more people again...however, mass unfollowing also comes with the risk of getting your account(s) suspended.

The best thing is to unfollow the people that are not following back. That way, you can follow more people.

Stop advertising your shit in a thread already about a much better tool with the exact capability you're talking about dumbass.

actually manageflitter pretty good and its free for those newbs that are reading this tread I never seen that there is an affiliate part of this program so don't think dmidnite is spaming his link tirade I defenetly believe that if you unfollow some people will moderation you will be able to add more followers.

When I hit these limits, I just stop my normal schedule in Tweetattacks and run one additional unfollow on the limited account. I deselect the protect mutual followers check box and then turn it back on after the run is done.

My daily unfollow/follow limit is 190-199 and it usually takes only one extra run to get over the hump.

I have one unfollow task for each account in the loop. put the settings to protect people youve just followed in the past 5-10 days, and dont follow people youve unfollowed.

trims dead weight and will free up space to follow more new people without obvious bannable follower churning.

the question in the OP has been answered perfectly, you can only follow 110% of your current number of followers once you get +2000
