Just happened to watch a short video form Michelle McPherson and wanted to start a discussion.

She talks about an interview in December 2010 with a Google Algo guy and she states that search is going to begin returning results with a social media weight.

The video is here:

What do you think?

I dont read the blog but personally, I agree. Before google ranks based on meta tags only, then whole site and page relevance, then backlinks become a huge factor and now I think they are give huge weight on activity. Not just activities in the site but also activities about it in social networks.

In a nutshell does this mean if you have a website blog at domain.ext/blog and those updates are spread around social sites, the website will be favoured by Google compared to a site that is static and has no updates?

Yah i believe it will be an ever increasing factor in the SERPs. As always in today's seo practices you need to incorporate social media, it's a gigantic growing force that needs to be utilized.

Aye true enough. This could make a nice auto blog even more important for SEO purposes.

I can't see Google ever penalising websites for dup content, as it's pretty much impossible to give credit to a site as being the author.

Website + /auto-blog + twitter/facebook etc could do well.

Damn this is gonna change a lot gonna have to get a different game plan now

yes, social media will play more importance role in futher SE.

It's common sense really that they would start integrating social media into the new search algo's. It will take large amounts of activity thought to implement in a good strategy and reading a recent interview from SXSW from a couple of the engineers seems to portray that have the ability to differiante between spam and established accounts. Whether this is true is another story. Incorporating social media into you seo strategies is a big must though

This topic has been discussed here on BHW a few times now the last 24 hrs.
The general consensus is that indeed social medium is an important factor in SEO.
Even Matt Cunts confirmed this in one of his videos, explicitly naming Twitter as an example.
