How did Mark Zuckerberg initially promoted facebook?

Just saw the social network on DVD and the thing that puzzled me most was how the hell did Mark Zuckerberg promoted facebook in the first place when it was first launched. I mean it's not like that guy had thousands to spend on marketing.:confused:

I get where facebook is at today what with all the billions of $$ of investment, talented staffs, etc but FB's initial fame at Harvard was ridiculously high. In the movie, Mark emailed the fb link to elite friends of Eduardo's. Don't know how true that is. Can a few Harvard students from an elite club actually get the rest of the students on campus to join an unknown site then?

What do you guys think? Hazard a guess anyone?

well you have to remember that FB was launched on a college campus. Personally I think it has a different environment. At college everyone is trying to network, get connections, socialize etc. Likewise, "social status" is important at college. When Zuckerberg launched facebook it became the thing to do similar to how people wear clothing that is in fashion. Once he got the initial following people started to face to face spread the word about facebook. Of course, you want all your friends to be on facebook. Thats how facebook has spread so fast, its all mouth to mouth.

Also zuckerberg was stirring up alot of drama on campus, as a result, the school newpaper and local newspapers were giving him free publicity.
 
Well they did start with 19k as seen on the movie. I guess it's one of those things that struck gold.
 
This is what I heard from a marketer that studied at Penn.

A lot of people theorize and link Facebook as to being funded by the CIA, and Zuckerberg was more of a designer and marketer than a programmer that heard of an investment opportunity offered to people at some of the top U.S. universities as a competition. It was a data mining project. Who could collect the most information from a targeted group of people: those with money, and who could collect this information the fastest? Who are going to have the most money, a bunch of people who play flash games all day, or people in schools like Harvard, Yale, Brown, Dartmouth, Princeton, etc? Zuckerburg apparently beat out a bunch of other people developing for the same goal by collecting way more data and analyzing information. If this is true, Zuckerburg had an edge by being within the ivy league school network. If you have ever been to any of the top Ivy league schools, you hear a lot of people who knows someone who knows someone all of the time. Meaning someone at Harvard knows someone at Yale who knows someone at Columbia, creating a very rich (not in the sense of money, but that makes sense) network of some of the wealthiest people in the U.S. (also take in to consideration how close these schools are to each other)

Well, offer something to people - market it as it should and let the rock begin. If I had the possibility, I would create the competitor of fb in a glance. :)
 
After limiting the signups to only college students making it exclusive and cool amongst young people they grew largely in part due to Oauth by logging into people's email accounts(user opted into them doing it) and messaging all their contacts to invite them to facebook. It's been estimated almost 75% of facebook's userbase were invited and joined fb through this method.
 
I think he is one damn of an lucky soul alive in this planet. To the best of my knowledge, it just took off on it's own initially.
 
6-7 years back 19k was really a big amount! They were just that serious about facebook!
 
Angel Investors ! when someone invests millions into a product , the people who jump in first to check out are techie guys who wanna be an entrepreneur , entrepreneurs , other investors. Trust me its a huge network. Just these group of people would easily make 10k sign ups in a month. Later it juz flows if the product is kewl..

A lotta start up companies juz try to attract audience by raising more millions than what they actually need....follow them closely....u would learn the game...groupon , linkedIn, shopify...if you observe the trend now most start up companies are into ruby....try to know why !
 
The same "formula" another site were made from a bunch of college students.

Name of the site..... Youtube.com? ;)
 
So if you want to be succesful. You should: Came up with an idea, spread the words in your university, and then sell the shit for a billion dollars.
 
I remember when FB was just college restricted. I didn't join, thought it would fail and the name "Facebook" was gay. Guess I was off a lil bit.
