has anyone ever tried building a digg like site? have you successfully monetized it? either all purpose or niche?

Never tried to build one for monetization, but you can use pligg as a good base to build it.

thanks for the offer, but i am planning on using the drupal version of digg called drigg. at least i was, i am looking at hotaru that namewithnogaps recommended and now i am serious thinking about using that instead or at least on one site.
but mainly i was asking if digg type sites are successful monetarily, not how to build them.

thanks, i had never even heard of hotaru, but it looks worthwhile trying. i love drupal, and i have seen a couple of drupal/drigg sites that are gorgeous. but it appears not to be all that updated. i am going to try this cms, thanks
