Thank Obama & Company, they passed new regulations to prevent banks from charging many fees and limit others, both to consumers and merchants taking debit card payments. Because of these new regulations the days of free checking accounts are gone for those with low balances, and that is also why your seeing banks trying to float monthly debit card fees.

These politicians will never learn, when you pass a new tax or regulation that cost money to a company they will pass it onto the consumers in one way or the other, and I don't blame them one bit for doing so.

If you actually talk to them they may waive it. I went to a branch and they did just that.

Join a credit union? Everyone is paying pennies in interest these days, but at least they aren't raping your money for visiting them.

Eh, somewhere in your terms it states the fee schedule so I can't really sympathize with you for staying with a bank that you knowingly can't afford? I don't use the banking side of Citi, but I use them for my main credit card and they are always friendly and helpful so I'm sure you can talk to them.

Like PHustler said though, banks will waive the fee if they are cool. My bank calls and checks up on me pretty often and since I'm a teen and they assume I'm poor and hopeless, the last time the lady called she said she was going to waive the fee for three months lol.

But if you don't have the income to sustain an account with a major bank, join a credit union like Maarchk said. A lot of them just require you to live in a certain state or county. Others require that you be employed by a certain company or be a member of a certain organization, so you may have access to those unions and not even know it.

Take a look at Axis Bank. They have a low minimum balance requirement(Rs. 5k) compared to other banks. and you can get it lowered by 50% if you talk to them.
Otherwise, get a PNB account. Just Rs. 1k minimum.
