    Default 1and1.com

I've never seen such a ROTTEN host !

First they are the only registrar I know of that doesn't register domains in real time, but take 48h !

I tried to transfer IN many domains from an other registrar,
they ask you to print, fill and fax them with your ID to confirm the transfer !!!
When auth codes are enough with every other registrar.

I did it, but after they told me that I have to change the registration info on the WHOIS as they don't see my email address.
I then emailed then a screenshot where my email is clearly written, but they keep denying it !
How did they send me the pdf files to print and fax in the first place if they don't have my email ?!?!

After I emailed at least 30 times the support and complaints departments and:
    1) Either they don't answer
    2) They UNDERSTAND NOTHING of the problem and answer some NONSENSE that has no link to what is happening.

    Calling them is useless...

    NEVER USE THEM !!!

Oh yes, I forgot to say that they refuse to pay me back for:
    1) the domains they could not transfer in.
    2) the domains that someone else did buy in the meantime, because they were too slow (!!) to register them.

I experience the same. Don't near them, Its near impossible to transfer your domain. It takes them almost one week to make my domain online.

Have to stick up for them also. I have 2 dedis, 3 pro shared accounts and over 200 domains with them and never really had any issues.

Only complaint I have is that their front end control panel is slow and their domains do take like 24 hours to register. But there speed and uptime is excellent, their support for important stuff is ok as well.

I have about 30 domains with them and they seem great to me, I did see that a few domains last week took 24hrs to go live but I was in no rush so I cant get to mad.

All in all, I think 1and1 has done a great job, even with shared hosting and 25 live sites I am running fast as can be.

Also, the price is great, I pay like $10 a month for hosting and with there deal going on now, I am getting domains for like $1 for the first year. . . cant really beat that price.

They are fine until you try to cancelor get support.
Don't know about the US site but in the UK their support is outsourced to India and The support staff are not properly trained.

Example: I sent an email asking if I could install a full Wordpress blog (because the default install has a crappy crippled WP blog that you can't even change themes.) my mail said something like "could you please tell me if it's possible to manually install Wordpress on my site?"

The reply came back "What is Wordpress?"

Then after I tried to cancel they went on trying to charge me multiple times and threatening to take me to debt collection. After about 29 emails and phone calls and me threatening to googlebomb them, I finally got my money back.

They are also well known for automatically renewing your domains withut notice and charging you.

Trying to transfer domains to any other host from them is absolutely tortuous so god help you if you've registered dmains with them to flip.

Well, thetermy, you are pretty lucky then :P

As a registrar, I hated them. As a web host, I hated them more.

I have now switched to name.com as my domain registrar and haven't had many issues. As for the host... well... it depends for what website you wanna know about

They suck big time. I made the mistake and transfered to them many domains a couple of years ago from godaddy, mainly for their free private registration. In the begining everything was great. After i decided that i didnt need some of the domains anymore, i turned off from their cp the automatic renewal. Although these domains were registered for almost a year more, i suddenly discovered that the private registration had been changed by them to public in all of them. I protested by telling them that i had paid them for these domains for a year more. Their reply was that the private registration applies only if i renew further these domains with them. I got angry with the blackmail and decided to transfer all my domains from there. Even so i faced a really hard time because they simply created whatever problem they could to discourage me. Including ridiculous excuses like that there is an error in their system and they couldnt, etc. A small advice from me. Stay away from there!!

Yes, I have seen a lot of commercials for 1and1 hosting and business website design on TV lately. I have purchased a few domains from them from time to time because of the free private registration but they are a nightmare to deal with. NOT recommended.

I've never had any problems with 1and1. Great pricing and they are fast in every way, including server response rate, and support. I've registered and transferred numerous domains, contacted support by phone, and email a handful of times. Would I host a larger site on their servers? Probably not, but I haven't made it to that point yet.

For every host there is a ton of people dissatisfied with service, it's just what you will see when one company has tens of thousands of customers. I've seen it for bluehost, dreamhost, hostgater, etc...etc...You can NEVER make every customer happy, no matter how hard you try or what you might or might not have done wrong.

Never, ever register your domains from the same company that is providing your hosting.

Always use a separate domain registrar.

This way, if you want to switch hosters, it's a simple matter of updating your DNS settings for the domain.

This is one of the most valuable tips I ever got, years ago, from someone who'd been around the block much longer than myself.

I have moved domains away from 1and1, transferred domains in, no problem.

I have also used lots of other hosts:

GoDaddy, NamesCo, 34sp, easily, fasthosts, uk2, justhost and a few others, never found any of them to come anywhere near 1and1.

I have shared hosting with 1and1 and well sometimes I think of moving, the speed it ok and the space you get is great.

Yes it takes to long to get a domain live
Yes the front end of there control panel is slow
    BUT

Price for hosting $10 as many domains as you want
database - as many as you need and up 1000GB large
Speed of server: Out of 30 domains one one has a problem, I think that my be a problem with coding I cant find or the database

So all in all no they are not the best in the world but for the price it gets the job done

is so true of whatever companies you use, simple as not putting all your eggs in one basket. Mix it up, names spread across registrars, sites at various hosting companies, mix the data up.

    On this...

is true in general - transferring names between *most* registrars is not a trivial task. To avoid namejacking (and to avoid or at least slow the loss of their portfolio size), it's not real simple. But after you've babysat a few, future transfers will be easier (with most registrars).

Transferring hosting content between *most* hosters is actually fairly easy if you plan ahead and understand the basics of DNS propagation.

The catch is that once 1&1 has you in their system, they will attack your wallet, your intelligence, and your business mercilessly. They reported a friend of mine to a collection agency for name registrations they failed to complete within 48 hours - they said the names were available to register, charged his credit card, and three days later sent a "We were wrong, those names weren't available." Which would have been okay with my friend, until the next month his credit card statement the charges hadn't been reversed. Flash forward through months of back and forth with 1&1, and my friend gets a call from a collection agency trying to shake down more money from him (in other words, "we charged you, failed to deliver any thing, can we have more money now?").

They also totally screwed Tweet Attacks with their failure to respond in a reasonable time frame less than two months ago. When TA's hosting was pretty much altogether offline. For *days*. Jay kept us up to date as best he could, but they (1&1) really screwed it on that one too. The TA team ended up getting things restored, but the hit they and their customers took was painful to say the least.

1&1 are a digital black plague.

I never had issues with 1and1. I register 25 domains with them and no problems so far. I register domains(because of the low price for one year... i work on them for one year, and if they are getting me money i extend the registration... if not ... i just disable the automatic renewal} with them and then host them on hostgator.
It takes the 24 hours to change the DNS ... but once that is done ... everything it's ok. So from my point of view, they are good.

Back in the day when I first hooked up with 1and1 they were giving something like 6 month free hosting, might have been even longer - it was ridiculous, ever since then I had a lot of confidence in them

I know there front end cp is slow - that pisses me off but it's better than it was.

And domain Reg is slow but other than that they are good.

I belive that all depends on who's on duty while you make the call / e-mail. I agree with the fact that outsourcing everything to India (and I mean tech support amongst others) is not such a good idea. I've seen both good and bad being said with every registrar / hosting out there.

Every time i've dealt with them they've been shocking, we keep everything we can away from them but some clients keep using them because they're cheap.

I'm pretty surprised people are saying registering a domain is slow. Every time I've ordered one, it has been a max of a few hours.

Even faster is when I registered a domain then changed the dns a few weeks ago. I added the domain to my 1and1package as an external, and everything was good to go in about 20 minutes.

Don't get me wrong, I'm on 1and1 because it's cheap and they have really fast servers for the price, but I wouldn't be there if I had more domains. Putting all your eggs in one basket, as mentioned, is not a very good idea. I only have a few domains.

Putting your eggs in one basket?

That's one of the main reasons I do use 1and1 - because they are a big and stable company: I don't have to worry about them disappearing or the service going down.

    My sites are always online.

And they back everything up every day --once I was clearing up my files and I deleted an entire site by accident. Rang them up the next day and they restored from their own backup-fantastic.

Also I remember a while back there was an issue with plesk and the latest php version causing it to break --they dealt direct with plesk and got the whole thing fixed - even though I have an unmanaged server.

That's all I have to say about that

Surely that was your first clue that they aren't the most competent tools in the shed?

Another issue dealt with smoothly by 1and1 today (does prove they are no good for blackhat ops though):
One of our client tried to send on a 500k list --1and1 pulled the plug automatically and blocked traffic on port 25.

I resolved issue with client, contacted 1and1 and everything was up and running within 1hour.

That's all the support I need
