Default VPS Hosting

Due to the fact that traffic to my sites is increasing I have outgrown my shared hosting plan over at Host Gator so I started looking for VPS Hosting and I found a company called HostV.

The pricing seemed right, the features seemed right so I said heck with it, I signed up with them. I was able to transfer my sites over to the new server without a hitch, setup my private nameservers and DNS, switched my sites to use the custom nameservers and such and low and behold the sites go down due to a spam attack on their server (hours to fix). Today my websites have went do at least a dozen times and they had the the nerve to tell me its my lan connection at home. I told them I have two different connections (and I do .

So anywho, I have been going back and fourth with their support (five different tickets open) and it still is not fixed. They tell me things like "check now, I have restarted the services". I ask them what services so maybe I can check them myself. Really starting to piss me off as I get an average of 5-12000 uniques a day and today I have 10 users. Thats right 10.

Not only that my video guide I sell , I usually get about 10 conversions or more and today I got a total of 2 and one of them I had to send to the user manually because the download link went down

Stay far away from these jokers

did they have reviews or anything, to me it sounds like your dealing with an unexperienced company that may overload there vps's.

i would always check webhostingtalk when looking for a vps or dedicated server.

ITs funny because with my shared hosting I had less memory and less issues.

hmm do you know how many people they host a vps?

because high cp load can easily cause over usage on ram. (i think they are putting too many people on one vps.)

My first VPS experience (TekTonic) was pretty unsatisfactory too.
I decided not to pour good time after bad and just moved on.

I recommend you do the same, without a backward glance. Hosting is a commodity and there are many excellent alternatives. I'm sure there are many great hosts used by members here - and it would be interesting to see their recommendations. There is probably a thread somewhere.

My next choice (RapidVPS) did everything promised and runs pretty well at very reasonable cost.

However "Dedicated" and VPS hosting are a different world from shared hosting and you need to take that very much into account. There's more to set up yourself and thus more to go wrong.

Typically you are expected to be more expert and support may be at extra cost.

A particular source of problems for me were environment differences between the imposed environment of my shared host (Hostgator) and my more flexible VPS set up.

So you need more time for test, and you need pre-prepared fall back arrangements (perhaps on your original shared server?)

My advice to anyone still on just shared hosting is to get a cheap VPS account ASAP and to learn the ropes at leisure. The resulting leap in skills
and self-confidence will more than repay a few months hosting costs.

You are going to need VPS or dedicated eventually anyway, so don't leave it until you are under time pressure. Because that's the way real heartache lies.
