Questions about creating proxies

I'm newish to proxy's so please bare with me, I searched but couldn't find what I was looking for. I have a couple dedicated servers with windows server 2008. Dedicated IP's for me are only 99c a month. Is there a way to use those as private proxy's for SB?

A few years ago I ran a proxy site. There was a script on hot scripts that was a proxy site. You went to it typed in your url and my server's Ip showed up instead of yours. It also bypassed all the school/work filters.

I got massive traffic to the site. I didn't know what I was looking at when I read the logs but figured it was hits to the site. I'm thinking perhaps the script allowed you to use my ip as a HTTP proxy for programs. Does this sound correct?

If you can turn your dedicated IP's into private proxy's why don't more people do it?

I've been reading about squid. It seams really complicated, how likly am I to configure it wrong and turn my private proxy into a public one?

I am very good with anything techy and it took me about a day and a half to install Squid properly - partially this was because the OS was FreeBSD and partially because there was basically nothing installed on the server and I had to learn how to install Apache and gazillion other goodies...

If you have some popular flavor of Unix on your server, it could take you less than an hour - getting to edit the text configuration file was also very weird experience

If i wanted to install this on a couple of shared servers. What would I need in order for it to work, a shell account I believe but what resources do i need. Root access?

If you're installing squid on a dedicated server you'll need root access to actually pull it from the repositories of your distro and then configure it. Forgot to say that if you're looking for something that doesn't act as a dedicated http proxy 24/7 there are lightweight solutions as well. They're not as robust as squid but they're definitely easier to configure. For instance:

That all depends on what you have to do and to handle a heavy load squid on a dedicated server with root access is your best bet.

Just wanted to give an update. I was able to get squid running. I have 10 external Ip's and each one would allow connection. When I would go to whatismyip it would always show the main external Ip no matter what ip address you were using. It took me a couple days but the problem was server_persistent_connections was set to on. When I turned that off, each Ip showed the correct outgoing address.
