Sorry about the last Socksification thread ladies, I meant to just edit one of the posts but the whole thing got deleted.
The difference between HTTP and Socks proxies is that HTTP type proxies can only mask HTTP connections, while Socks can mask pretty much anything that connects to the internet in any way. So HTTP can do X, and Socks can do X, Y, and Z. HTTP just does browsers, Socks does browsers, programs, anything. Capisce?
The easiest way to make use of Socks in that capacity that I've found currently is a program called "Proxyfirewall", found here. Download it, install, load it up, and let's get started.
Alright, no setup necessary, let's rock n' roll. Click the Open Proxies tab, then "Add Proxies" and it'll bring you here:
Take your Socks list (which you should have handy from here and here) and slap it in. Once they're loaded, click "OK", then back in the main Open Proxies tab click "Check Proxies" and you'll get this:
Settings are fine, you're used to it from Charon, right? Adjust if you want to, otherwise just click "Run Proxy Check" and let it sort out all the ones it wants to use. Proxyfirewall uses its own checking system, so it'll likely spit out all your 4's and questionable 5's without asking. If you only intend to use your Socks lists for this purpose, it's not a horrible idea to just take your Leeched list and throw it directly into Proxyfirewall since you won't need to check it twice. You could also just check in Charon and then paste that list into Proxyfirewall and start using it right away. Just a matter of preference and experimentation.
Go to the "Rules" tab and add the program you intend to Socksify. Here I'm throwing in Firefox for easy browsing shenanigans. If you attempt to connect to the internet with any program while proxyfirewall is running, it will ask you if you want to Socksify it or not before letting it through (just like a regular firewall). So make sure to allow everything ahead of time and Socksify what you intend to put through a proxy.
Select "Single" from the dropdown menu and then navigate to "Open Proxy" and select any of the "Socks" proxies you just added. Then just finish editing the settings for that particular program's proxy rules and you're done.
The settings above are standard for when I'm doing something like posting torrents or making e-mails/profiles/random accounts. "Rotate Randomly" just means that the IP list won't go in order, it will select a random IP from the list every time it has to switch.
Of special note is the "Manual Toolbar" option, which allows you to quickly change the IP for any program Proxyfirewall is managing with a single click. Use it.
Voila! Every time Firefox opens while Proxyfirewall is open, Proxyfirewall will force it to go through the proxy it's set to. As mentioned earlier, this can be done for any program that connects to the internet, online games, anything. Just set Proxyfirewall on it and lock it down.
Does anyone have a suggestion for a vista compatible program? Proxyfirewall says it's not functional with vista...tried a search but only come up with lists...
thanks Ape, this is really useful and your other tut as i am want to setup a machine that just does proxies
If you want to have a machine strictly hunting/leeching/checking proxies incessantly, look into Proxyfire (not to be confused with Proxyfirewall). It's kind of overwhelming to deal with until you're well established in the proxy lifestyle and all, but it has a lot of customization and automated features available.

Newbie warning!! OK, so I followed the steps and I think I got everything right, I got a list of proxies, tested them with charon and export/imported to proxyfirewall...but when I go to access a webpage it doesn't work. I set up the rules to rotate open proxies and all, but when I go to any page it just says "IE cannot display this page", no matter what site I went to...any advice?

I'm having a similar problem. I do all of the above, my IE does open sites with the proxyfirewall rule set up for it, but when I check the ip via whatsmyipaddress.com it doesn't change. It's just my IP. Am I missing something? Isn't the IP supposed to change?

Nevermind. I figured it out. I am using vista & that was affecting the program somehow. I noticed that the firewall initialization was failing, so I fiddled around & tried running the program as an administrator. This seemed to fix the problem. Now the ip's are changing
if socks is your preferred proxy, sockschain and sockscap work well for these.
It's all about quality proxies. If you try chaining with crap, high latency, public (aka busy) foreign proxies, you won't have results. Use private proxies when you are testing these methods to ensure it isn't the proxy that is causing you problems
Do I have to keep changing the socks? I mean do they ever become ineffective.
Some stay up for weeks, some go down 10 minutes later. If you're only going to change your IP the one time or not for anything serious, might as well use a VPS or TOR respectively.
Could anyone please explain to me how you can use proxies with something like a php script. For example i am learning cURL and trying to set up multiple accounts with websites how can i make my script use the socks proxy?
Any help would be greatly appreciated - love this forum
I've been pouring over this forum all day, since I've been avoiding it for so many months and need to learn. I'm making some progress.
I have a quick question about Firewall Proxy:
What might be preventing my ability to import Socks' into my open proxies list? A screenshot of the dialog after I've chosen the document from which to import a fresh list is attached, however when I click "OK", the list remains empty.
Does anyone have an idea as to what I have done wrong?
No prob. Some programs automatically ignore it, others can't deal with it at all. You're almost always better off just stripping it out before you do any checking or anything.
Proxyfire (not Proxyfirewall) is really good for that, even if you don't get into the umpteen other tools in it the filtering is handy as all get out.
List filtering, not only stripping the extra crap off the end but pre-removing planetlabs and other undesirable IPs before you bother starting the check.
I frankly know nothing about the Judging system on Proxyfirewall, just that it seems to work. So if you had more stringent judging needs or wanted to use a specific external judge you'd want Charon there too.
The sorting of Socks 4, 5 and 4/5 is much cleaner in Charon. You have to tell Proxyfirewall which you plan to import ahead of time, so it'll just throw out the rest.
I use Charon just to clean out duplicates and assemble lists too, just copying from the source and slapping them into the window is handy sometimes even if I'm going to later export them to a different tool for checking.

pnewcomb,
So you got this working in Vista? I'm running Vista SP1, 32-bit, in admin mode, with most of the Visat EAC and firewall stuff turned off (now watch me get hacked for admitting that).
I'm going to try Proxyfirewall, regardless of their warnings it doesn't work, and see if I can replicate your success. Will report back.
I think I did everything right. I only download socks proxies and let the program do its thing, selected a proxy and checked on one those "what's my ip address". It was different than my original IP so I guess it working correctly. I just want to make sure (test) that my original IP is not tied to this fake IP address. How can I test to see if it's not a transparent, public proxy, or some lame proxy?
I messed around with this for several hours. Got my lists, checked in Charon, loaded ProxyFirewall. DAMN - they are all slow. I am just going to use some web proxies. I don't need super secure, just trying to create a bunch of twit accounts.
Hello! Thank you very much for this info. I was wondering why it takes so long now for the browser to load pages and to upload files. When I'm using my normal IP a video file will take only 10-15 min to upload to youtube, but when I'm using a proxy using Proxy Firewall it tells me upload will take 4 hours. I'm assuming I need to use a proxy address closer to my location, but it's wierd, when I select one that's near me, and I do a 'what's-my-ip' check, it says I'm in China or Denmark, always switching up.
UG! I found an IP right next door (about 30-50 miles) and it takes so long for my browser to load pages, way too long. Is this normal?
Thanks.

I'm having the same problem with these being too slow, I'm wondering what you mean by, "I am just going to use some web proxies. I don't need super secure..."
I was able to initially import a list of proxy servers when I first used ProxyFire.
Now I am trying to do it again and the program isn't importing them. It is a plain text file with just the IP addresses listed in a column (same as I did before).
Click Open Proxies tab >> Add Proxies >> Import >> Choose txt file >> Proxies appear in list >> Click OK >> The new proxies don't show up in the Open Proxies tab.
I checked the ProxyFire site and searched the web for any ideas but didn't find any help.
Anyone else experience this and if so, how did you correct it?
Thank you!
