Lesson of the day....carry your business cards EVERYWHERE you go...

I'm a work-a-holic and used to always just eat my lunch at my office...make a salad or some grilled chicken....and just crush it in front of the computer...

About a week ago I told myself that no matter how busy I was that I would take 45 min to eat somewhere other than my office...so I started hitting the local spots near us.

Today I hit a sports bar and since I was by myself I sat at the bar to eat and watch ESPN. While watching the highlights I started speaking with the other guy there eating....started about sports, then he asked a "what do you do" question...told him online marketing....then he responds "no shit, like ranking the google?" lol - yes that is what he said - not a typo haha

I just smiled and said yeah...web design, seo, etc (technically I don't do it - but I'm a partner in the overall business - I'm more the marketing guy) - any way he responds "no shit I was just speaking with (competitor) and they were fucking jerks on the phone - you seem much more friendly - I'd rather pay you the $5k a month then give it to those dicks"

At that point I had to stop from outright grinning - but I gave him my card - and got his - and just shot him a "hey nice to meet you" email

Not sure what that other company offered to him to "rank the google" lol - but chances are its just traditional seo - and he is already set/expecting to pay big $$...

So, we will find out what they offered to do...and come up with a price under $5k....."Great news...we are going to be able to over deliver on what XXXXX was offering AND it will oNLY cost $4,500 a month - we are able to save you $500 per month!" - now we look like heroes and have a new client and additional monthly revenue.

Grilled Chicken Salad.....$13
Bottle of water..............$9

Lunch........................$22

NEW WHALE OF A CLIENT......PRICELESS!

Lesson...strike up conversation everywhere you go and always carry a business card(s)!

Yeah, good advice for sure. And if you don't have any business cards, get them printed cheap ASAP just to have it on you.

Definitely good advice. Even if you are an online marketer, carry business cards. When you pull out a wad of cash at the store, and you start talking about how you sit home all day and make money online, people will flock around you. These are the people that you want! They know absolutely nothing about IM, and are eager to learn! Up until now, they thought that all these websites were ran by huge companies, and now that they know they can do it too, they will pay YOU to teach them

Yup....BUT once you have some money...get the best cards you can....clear plastic...metal...pop up cards....you want them to look at it over and over...and even show others ...."hey check out this business card!"

I used clear plastic cards before they became popular...and now I use metal cards....NOT cheap at all...BUT they make a statement and will not be thrown out!

Make that first impression count!

I have had that type of AHA moment. It feels amazing! Mine was with traffic and highlight video creation though. Congratz!

You should ALWAYS send them an email the same day, just to remember him about your conversation and avoid the risk that your card ends up being lost with the secretary, burried with another 1000 cards, in the washing machine, etc etc!!
