Thumbs up [Journey] My 30 Books In 30 Days Kindle Challenge Starts Tomorrow

I have been from pillar to post, one IM method to another and seriously fed up of this shit, not to mention completely broke.

This is my final shot: Kindle. I am following the model of churning out book after book after book and ZERO promotion.

Some guy on WF says he makes $200 a day from 50 books, for example.

For the next 30 days, I will write for Kindle. I will publish one book every day in the following:

    - Erotic Fiction (easiest to write for)
    - Regular Fiction
    - Non-fiction (mainly "how to")

These books do not have to be long. Only around 5,000 words which is like 10 articles. If you write about what you already know (at least to start with) this is easier than you think.

I don't care if my first books are shit. The main thing is to get them out there.

Now I don't want to be alone on this challenge. Who is going to join me?

Rest of tonight I will keep reading more about how to do Kindle stuff but tomorrow I start writing and publishing.

Thats a lot of writing. Make sure to update this thread - maybe with the names or something to keep yourself on track. If you stay motivated and actually turn out books daily or weekly ( I think something more reasonable to shoot for ) than it could be a great success. I have yet to do anything with kindle but have heard its profitable in the past. Best of luck!

Thanks, you are right. It is a lot. My original target was one book every two days but I can see that slipping.

I am capable of doing one a day so that is what I will do. I need a meaty target, something I can really strive for. Otherwise I will slacken. I realize the dangers of over-ambitious targets but I know I can do this.

I will try to write mostly from what I know already which is a great deal. I will also write based on my own life experiences.

A few months ago I wrote two erotic fiction and never bothered uploading and I aimed for 5,000 words for each and easily surpassed that. The key for me was to not get writers block or have to research anything.

Interesting. I will follow your progress and look forward to see the results. I have considered writing some how to e-books, but have not found the time yet.

Use Dragon Naturally speaking. There is a crack for it on BHW.
All you have to do is narrate the story and edit it accordingly.

Will you be using different pseudonyms for the genres? It would look a bit weird to have "Joe Smith" writing Erotica and non-fiction technical books.

Yes, I'm going to have at least 3 pen names. One for erotica, one for non-fiction and one for fiction.

I may need to have further for the non-fiction as I will likely write about different subjects. We'll see.

Ironically, after all my niche writing, I may end up writing very little non-fiction because writing flows much more easily with fiction in many ways. We'll see.

OK time to get cracking! Will report back in several hours!

Took me around 4 hours but I've written 5,000 words for my first fictional story.

It's pretty dire in many ways but I'm learning as I go along. The story changed quite a lot as I was writing it!

I'm now taking a further hour to edit it to correct mistakes and rephrase some things. Then I will upload it for review.

I seriously don't mean to be the buzzkill in this thread...but I think you're going to find that this is much harder than it looks.

I work with authors (and musicians, comedians, artists of all kinds). The writers I promote (even those that write Erotic fiction; which, you're correct, is the easiest to churn out quick) can take upwards of 6 months to a year to pound out something decent.

I know that you indicated that you don't care if the work is shit - but the fact is, you're not going to sell anything if it's shit. The Kindle marketplace is incredibly competitive. I work with very talented authors that are struggling to get their books noticed and sales rank up to where their works appear even as a suggestion on Amazon.

In order to sell their (once again - really GOOD) works, they have to promote the hell out of them. <--- this is typically what they hire me for. This involves book trailers and tons of YT promotion, blog tours, ad buys on Google and FB, etc. And even then, it can be hard to move the needle.

Please don't let this detour you in any way. I'm very much looking forward to seeing your progress. You might be able to stumble on to something that I might be able to use to help my writers!! But do know that this may not be the easy money that the guy writing on WF says it is (go figure - some douche on WF exaggerating their success!!). You've certainly got a challenge ahead of you. But I, for one, will be happy to throw out some tips as you go along if you continue to update this thread!

Remember - the quality has got to be decent or it will simply be ignored. Factor in zero promotion and there's no point in doing this at all.

Just some food for thought. Now make it work, my friend!!

I would focus on getting fewer titles out there and put some more work into making them decent. A good "how to" title can sell but as padlock said without any promotion you will be disappointed. Also - what is your price point for these books? It seems like free to .99 will be max you could sell them for. It is easy to upload shit to kindle direct but it is a whole other thing to sell titles.

Default Re: [Journey] My 30 Books In 30 Days Kindle Challenge Starts Tomorrow

Hey no problem. Maybe I should add a little more.

First, my writing skills are very good. I have written several ebooks so am not a total beginner to book writing. I have also sold my content as PLR and received very good reviews. I don't want to give away my background but I can write better than most people.

So when I said my book was dire, I meant according to my very high standards. I have just now gone over the first draft, making corrections and changing the phrasing and I am quite happy with the finished product.

I hear what you are saying about it taking 6 months to get out a good product but I am not making the same kind of ebooks. Your clients sound like serious novelists. That is not what I am doing.

My books will average around the 5,000 words mark, nowhere near novel length.

As for erotic fiction, as far as I know, there are two ways to write it. One is to write a good erotic novel, concentrating particularly on the female market.

Another method that I have seen on BHW and another Kindle forum is to just churn out what I would call "sex stories". The kind of stories that have been free one the internet since it began and even before, on BBSs. I am not trying to be the next EL James, not at all. Sex stories are more "filthy" and graphic. More men enjoy them, but so do some women. This is no poetry!

There is one guy on BHW who said he wrote about the filthiest stuff he could think of. That is not EL James style erotica at all.

Also, I do not intend to do any promotion. I am following the method of set and forget. Look around and there are many Kindle authors doing this. I know of countless stories of people who upload and move on and they make sales. Try this with a standard ebook online and it is impossible. I may promote when I get fed up of writing but, for now, I will just keep on writing. You may doubt the guy on the WF but I do not, that guy precedes when the place was shit (his name is Dean Shainin) plus there are so many other examples of taking the mass approach.

I'm no novel writer. Perhaps one day, but not in the next 30 days.

Lol, you could say that about anything.

Let me reiterate, if you add an ebook to a web site, nothing will happen.

If you add a book to Amazon, you will make sales.

That's one hell of a difference.

I've done some extensive research on this and with "how to" books, loading the title and description with keywords is sufficient.

From my research I have done, I intend at pricing initially at $2.99 and seeing what happens from there.

Uploading "shit"? That is not my intention. What I meant above was that it will be a "learn as I go" process and I expect to get better Also, you make a classic mistake by thinking one must aim for the gutter of up to 99 cents. My research shows that many have seen higher number of sales when raising the price. It's about perceived value, I guess.

Interesting stuff, florflor. I'm certainly interested in watching this thread and seeing how you fare and, again, I'll be happy to offer any relevant thoughts as they might pop up.

It's occurred to me also to just upload a shit-ton of erotic stories posted by fledgling wanna-be authors on old BBS threads (some of it is actually quite good!). In fact, I've read some things on Literotica that I thought might make for an awesome compilation...but, then, a lot of those guys/gals are actually real authors that could flag the 'work' in question pretty quickly.

Yes this crossed my mind too. There is a ton of such stories out there and still being written today. Over at xnxx there are tons of perves who write and publish such stories for free. I wonder if there is any way to license such content for cheap. Problem is, if they smell money they get greedy!

I would steal it but this is going to be a 100% white hat venture and don't want to risk my account.

To start with, I am sticking to Kindle. I have heard good things about Smashwords but just don't want the complications at the moment, I can always do it later. As for Nook, I heard that is for US residents only? I am in the UK.

So I've uploaded my first title! Pretty painless.

One thing I didn't do is produce a cover.

I am not sure on that one. I am producing in such volume that I can't afford 30 bucks for each cover. (though it is great news that high quality premade covers are as low as 30 bucks now, there is definitely some downward pressure on prices which is great to see, I see some custom shitty designs for like 70 bucks which are a ripoff when I can just choose a great premade one from a library of hundreds and pay only 30 bucks)

Sure, I can go to DP but I cannot verify the rights to images of such producers.

And if I choose stock photos myself, there are 2 problems:
    1) most of them are shit (look too much like stock photos) or expensive.
    2) I can't find any suitable ones.

One thing I hate in marketing is when you have so many choices. This is the problem with book cover designing.

I have been looking at some of these Kindle cover generators and they all have the same problem in that you still need to provide an image yourself.

    Any ideas?

Just remember, he ain't the only one. If you search bhw, there are more here who are revealing of their earnings.

OK so my book is published. I have enrolled in KDP Select which allows your book to be loaned and Amazon pay you for this. Also, I am promoting it for free for 5 days to get reviews. I think reviews are important on Amazon or else nobody will buy.

I've got 4 erotica titles on kindle. Didn't take much time with them. Got a crappy cover and they make pretty good sales for the time and money I put in them.

Hey, thanks for contribootin. Care to share how much you're making?

Also, where did you get the covers from? Admittedly, good erotica stock photos are easier to come by than non-erotica ones but I'm still interested.

    thanks

OK chaps I uploaded my second title today. 5,000 words and I am quite pleased with how it turned out but, no doubt, fiction is hard to write. This one took me over 5 hours. I also managed to dig up a personal photo to use as the cover, added the text in GIMP and it looks great!

Published it. Now its nearly 4am here. Time to sleep...

Tomorrow, I am going to do non-fiction for a change. I am considering investing in this $30 for my non-fiction covers because they look highly credible:

I would steal it but this is going to be a 100% white hat venture and don't want to risk my account.

To start with, I am sticking to Kindle. I have heard good things about Smashwords but just don't want the complications at the moment, I can always do it later. As for Nook, I heard that is for US residents only? I am in the UK.
Thought some of you might be interested to know that I had a shot at licensing content from authors on Literotica last year. I used the forum to drum up interest, got 11 authors on board (got them to sign a contract for rev share) and in total I got 42 (original) stories which I formatted for Kindle / made covers for etc. It worked quite well to begin with - got close to $1k in the first month then sales declined quite sharply after that. I pulled the books off recently as it wasn't worth my while and I didn't want the hassle of the authors asking about their cut all the time. I now produce my own Kindle books in the hot to niche and do much better with this. I think the licensing route could be quite a good one if done properly, though.

Got started late today due to writer's block!

Actually, it's more like I hadn't done much in the way of planning.

Now I have decided what my next 10 or so non-fiction books will be about and even figured out a system for churning them out!

But my first non-fiction book will be from the heart, about something I am passionate about and can really educate others well on.

I hope I can get the bulk of it finished tonight, I hate delays but I started late. I will try to catch up tomorrow using my "churn" method for the other 10 or so non-fiction titles.

I was also browsing the free/cheap non-fiction books in the Kindle Store and noticed some porn WTF? Is this really allowed???

Just finished uploading the third book, this is non-fiction. Took me a couple of days, 5000 words, it's pretty damn good.

Tomorrow I start on the my churning method for non-fiction books. Will be easy to write because I already know these niches well.

Plenty of free downloads so far (have had about 50 total for the first two books) but no reviews yet unfortunately.

I've been lazy today on the first of my non-fiction books to be written according to my method.

Still, I've written 3,300 words. I think my problem with this new method is that they are so easy to write that I am getting careless and lazy!

Hopefully tomorrow I can start afresh, finish it and then try to get back on the one day a book track again. With this new method, I have the capability to churn out a string of books in consecutive days, one a day, I feel I need to take advantage of it avoid losing momentum.

I've had over 100 downloads but still no reviews yet? What gives?

    I am a nooby but:
If you download it is easier to save for later. People download because they can. Or at least, that is my view.
100 downloads and no bad reviews is an indicator to some people too.

I do wonder if price changes show up, after your five days of promotion are done I mean.

This has been an interesting read. Good luck and hope you make it on those 30 books. Even if not, it will still be interesting on how it does turn out.

That's a good point, I had not thought of that. Maybe astute Kindle users know that a book will not be free forever, so they regularly download to store them up.

After the free promotion is up, yes I think the price will be showing. I have done some research and many say to start at $2.99 and then do some testing from that baseline.

Thanks, I hope to make it on this 30 too. The only chance I won't is if I decide to stop doing short books and concentrate on longer ones. Kindle kinda forces you to write high quality stuff. Which is why I had the problem today with trying to write to the usual IM ebook standard which is a bit lower than most Kindle stuff which I would put higher, not always print quality, but still higher than usual IM ebooks.

Doing this has given me many great ideas for longer books, series etc. I actually want to get through these 30 a.s.a.p. so I can start writing those!

Yes, my first three are out. Two short stories and one non-fiction. I am currently working on my next non-fiction which is done in a more formulaic approach that I will probably use to bang out another ten more like this.

Then I will move onto erotica. I was going to move into erotica earlier but I think I want to bang these non-fiction ones out first.

Then after that, I will do longer, more fun projects.

Interestingly, I have been reading a novel by Jeffrey Archer and he explains he did not start writing till his mid-30s which is my age now. And he became a millionaire from it. It gives me hope, I am seriously considering a career as a novelist although that requires a lot of hard work, development, dedication and luck. Not sure if I have the literary skills but does anyone know for sure when starting out? I doubt it.

    Besides, practice makes perfect.

    Hi,

I've never heard of these two things. I've still a lot to learn. Though I know this much, if you enroll in Kindle Select (as I have), it's exclusive to Amazon for 90 days.

can you elaborate on how this method works exactly? is this adsense based?

Have submitted my fourth book. Should be published in less than 12 hours.

Here's some view stats on my free promotions so far, by the way Kindle stats are delayed by about a day:

    Book #1 (fiction) 78

    Book #2 (fiction) 73

    Book #3 (non-fiction) 181

Interestingly, after I submitted book #2, it surpassed book #1's views very quickly. But then it ran out of steam. I did a cover for book #1 (didn't have one to start with) and it's now overtaken book #2!

But book #3 is blowing away the others, I'm not sure why. It might be down to the cover, or the niche (not a particularly huge niche). I have no idea why.

    Still no reviews yet

I've never done any publishing myself, but it seems like a lucrative market (especially erotica). I'm not sure how you get paid, but hers are a couple that I have found.

btw when i wrote istore I meant apple store * sorry for confusion

    1. http://www.apple.com/itunes/content-.../book-faq.html
Apple devices based ( can create multitouch books)
You may want to try kids books with the multitouch...being interactive and all...kids love that sh%^
My family manages a number of preschools. I can tell you from experience...they love anything interactive.
    Here's a twist for you:
Most parents have ipads/tablets too. You may want to go to schools/ libraries (volunteer reading) to read to kids using one of those devices. Teachers usually do a project on this kind of thing. Parents get a report that goes home (with homework for the kid) You would probably get some conversions with parents who are downloading the book at home.

    2. http://www.smashwords.com/
you can publish a digital book free, and then put it on sale at many online retailers, including Smashwords’s store, Apple’s iBookstore, Barnes & Noble, Kobo and Sony.

Started very late today (again!) but still did 2,500 words in 1.5 hours, and am impressed with the quality of this book compared to the last one which was pretty good but not up to my high standards.

Then the coffee gave me a damn dizzy spell! Will have to finish this tomorrow.

I'm annoyed at not being able to keep to my "one book a day" target but what can I do? I can't force it. I would have preferred to get the bulk of it done today but that's life, I'll reach 5,000 tomorrow but I want to go even further if possible, say 7,000.

Have you been able to monetize the books you have published?
