I've been doing some research on google but where better a place than on BHW to find out the pros and cons I might have missed. Basically I want to incorporate a membership logon via wordpress, no subscription integration or anything fancy, just have users sign up so they can view a page. Now I know this is easy enough and there are a plethora of plugins I could use to achieve this but what I want to find out is what are the associated security issues to allowing this?

I am trying to do exactly the same thing for a friend of mine. I want all the pages hidden from the net and only viewable by members. I only need a simple system as they won't be charging for membership, so I was going for 'absolute-privacy' plugin and then setting up accounts within WP with various editing privileges.
I am not sure what you mean by security issues. How secure will it be? or could users share their login, or hack attacks?
I guess it should be pretty safe from average prying eyes ally3009 but I dont think anywhere can be 100% from serious "professional" attacks. but I doubt they would be interested in anything on my site.

Suppose i'm thinking simple hacks, spam setups (ironic here i know) etc. I know there are plugins out there for the membership to wp that will add maths questions or captcha so that might be worth adding in

you can simply using basic wordpress function with some additional plugins
