Re: monetize internet cafe
i'm surprised people can earn from internet cafe as more places are going wifi, could u share with us on your earning in that business, for curiosity sake.
Well, for legit stuff, i suggest add on service, like drinks/food that are bottled or not gonna be sticky/oily. Magazines related to tech/gaming. Computer repair/modification service. Oh and handphones too. They should be hot in the uk right now i suppose.
You can also promote your own side services such as webdesign/graphics as a separate service. Just look at your regular customers and see what would be effective. The fact that you have a shop is a advantage cause it make u come off legit.
For illegal stuff, u can get some hookers and ask them provide services in the backroom to relax ur cilents after a hour or two of internet surfing.....ok. i am just joking, don't take that seriously. LOL.

Re: monetize internet cafe
You could install some plugins to your browser software and change ad's on pages that your clients visits.

Re: monetize internet cafe
Heres a way to double your profit: double your prices :P The internet cafe I go to charges 3$ per hour, I'm not sure what that is converted to pounds but I'm sure you could get away with 2 pounds/hour.

Re: monetize internet cafe
Can your punters play games on the pcs? Multiplayer games against each other?
You can run gaming events/competitions, charge an entry fee and award prize (a crappy trophy) to the winner. Leaflet drop local school/college. I have seen some companies offering gaming as part of a stag do. Maybe do some jv with a paintball company and offer a package where they shoot each other on computers first and then go to paintball field and do it for real. Sorry just some random thoughts.

Re: monetize internet cafe
well, if there are market for MMORPG or online game over at ur place, u might think of selling some online game reload card or something(i dont whats that called) and also some merchandised.(lexample: World of Warcraft) or maybe u can sell some games, legit copy of cause. since in uk, gamble are legit, u might think of putting of some slot machine or something...or maybe transform it into a slot machine center (just my 2cents)

Re: monetize internet cafe
In general, you want to expand it to more than a just a internet cafe. That's the concept bascially. Make your place more multi functional and attractive to people who walk by. If a guy walks by and he see it's internet only, he'll go "feck it, i can use that at home or wifi" and continue walking.
If you have other stuff like magazines for tech/gamers, handphone services, computer services, game merchandise, gaming machines....you just give them another 5 reasons to step foot into your shop and pay u.
I also like sox88 idea of free services for sign up, you could extend it to free internet usage and merchandise as it's apply. You just need to advance notice the network that all your signups will be from one place and have their ok.

Re: monetize internet cafe
There used to be an internet cafe down the road from us, and one of the things they offered which you may already do is allow gamers to come in and play online and I don't just mean on pc's they had 360's and ps3's setup for people do some online gaming on, they used to charge extra for being able to it. Like I said you may already do this, but internet cafe's are not so popular now as more and more people are getting access to the internet in there homes.

Re: monetize internet cafe
I'm UK based too . First and most important thing is to know what kind of customers you have. Do you have immigrants? Do you have workers? Depending on this you can start catering specifically for those groups.
I read you dont have resources to set up a calling center, but you can still something in between.
For example, if you have customers that are immigrants from Poland, you can sell calling cards with good rates for Poland. And on the drinks/snacks you can have Polish brands of snacks...... (It's quite easy to get these kind of merchandise in the UK).
Your computers are going to give you 1pound and hour, you just need to look into getting some other form of business around that. It can be food and drinks, calling cards, photocopies, tobacco (Im not sure about licences) .......
Just my 2 pence

Re: monetize internet cafe
Rather than set up a call center, an alternative idea might be selling handphones, handphones cards/numbers, accessories and even ringtones services, hand phones will be in demand and are changed regularly by buyers, so it is a profitable market currently.
If you want go the gaming route of ps3/xbox360, you basically have to invest in original games as well, so you can't have pirated stuff in the systems, unless u want to take a risk which is possible, some of the copied stuff look the same as the original. You'll also need to charge a high fee, definitely not 1 pound per hour to make it worth the space and investment.

Re: monetize internet cafe
you can also keep printer and scanner and charge people for that service. A lot of cafe's keep blank cds, dvds and pen drive on display. calling cards is a good idea.
you can offer membership to people at some discounted price. this will make sure that you get regular customers. you can also start giving free basic internet course's to bring customers. just teach them how to use email, browse internet and chat online.
I would really recommend you to go for setting up gaming facility if you can afford it right now.

Re: monetize internet cafe
I think maybe changing from an Internet Cafe to a Cafe with Internet may help
Use premium coffee and espresso, lavazaa, illy, invest in a espresso machine if you do not already have one. I know they are expensive (A good one can cost between 3k for a smaller one to 15k for a huge, color customized unit), but they knock out $4 drinks in 2min max (with a profit margin around 85%) Please do not buy a cheap machine, used is ok, but get a quality unit. Smoothies, and italian soda (club soda with flavoring) also have pretty good markup.
PM me with any questions you may have about the coffee and espresso game, beans, machines, setups,... Thats what I used to do for a living, and plan to do sometime in the future.

Re: monetize internet cafe
setup keylogger on all the computers to extract their passwords :P im sure you dont need me to tell you how you can make money off that. haha
or you can setup a server portal on the network so every few mins users will get redirected to an AD page. you can sell these ad pages to local businesses. (you can use cpa ads but its a bit dodge as all your traffic will come from one ip)
- this can be done to wifis too.
have lan parties, get groups of kids and order them pizza+coke for the night.. charge them a fee per person for the night and go wild with it..

Thought of this while reading the above...
If your computers are running Firefox then you could use Greasemonkey to render some ads in a floating DIV that only displays on popular sites like Myspace, Facebook etc.
Not as intrusive, less people get pissed off/walk out, most will think it's a natural part of the site
Alternatively you could charge teens in the area for a simple VPN/Tunnelling service (using the inactive PCs) so they can get round school filters
(Not sure about legality but it'd be immensely popular)

they might as well use free proxy sites for it. unless they need it for some "illegal" reasons

True but the VPN/Tunnelling route is generally faster and ad free
I know plenty who use it at University and it's gone undetected so there's another cool marketing point.
Of course it all depends on the school, filtering system (Most people can beat websense just by using Firefox Portable) and general competency of the admins.

Re: monetize internet cafe
Code up your own 'toolbar/plugin' that will force ads on certain pages eg. 404.
Also what was mentioned above, replacing current ad spots with your own.
