It's now like they are doing the same things.
You need good& quality content in order to create a websites which could receive backlinks
If you are asking on what to invest first, you should invest on very, but very good content. You need to build something nice and only after to promote it. If you are going for backlinks and a shitty content it's like starting a marketing campaign for a supermarket which has no products.
Ahhh I see. Makes sense. Right now I have 35 fresh & unique post and my blog is only a little over a week old. I'm writing anywhere from 3-4 posts a day. =)
The most powerful SEO technique is to create a blog that will be helpful to others, useful unique content articles, and then high quality, niche-related backnlinks on high PR authority websites..
Now of course if that was as easy as it sounds, I would already be a millionaire and ranking #1 for car insurance, dating and online casino...

Most people are telling me to wait at least a month before I start backlinking. I was thinking of backlinking with Hubpages and perhaps Ezinartciles. I also have a Twitter page at the moment to build up a lot of followers.
I think it's important to blog about that which you enjoy most, and capture every possible long tail in your niche. OP, if you are considering going content route, Linkbait seems to be a good practice here, where your content is just soo goddamn good that high authority sites just Have to give a link.
Not sure what your niche is but I started blogging in politics and was kind of similar to you where I posted a few articles a day. However my most popular posts weren't based on controversial news but more about policy and information about legislation.
My blog got popular quick for a few reasons. First, quality content must always come first. Second, technorati, newsvine, descriptive blog post titles, there's likely a ton of directories for any niche you can submit too (and depending on your popularity, later website owners will be contacting you to submit your post to their directory). Third, social networking and encouraging blog comments. If you engage with commentors, especially those who are blog owners then you'll build networks, exchange blogroll links, and they'll think of your blog when they need to link to a source.
I think backlinking is more effective on informational posts, however I do find more controversial posts do well on social media. I wouldn't waste too much time backlinking on sites like hubpages. If you focus on relevant and quality content then you'll get quality backlinks
agree with you buddy.as long as you blog about your passion and the things that you enjoy the most you could come up with fresh and unique contents every time. And don't worry much about back links they would eventually come as long as people will find your blog posts helpful enough.

To me the sequence is,
Make a good quality content - Make easy for reader to share to their friend - and then build backlinks.
