Sure it works, or else people wouldn't be doing it on the scales they do it. But you have to find a company that gets a lot of traffic, and then it has to easily be misspelled. Second is you have to decide if it's just going to be a simple inactive website with adsense or something that gets people to fill out offers on "behalf of the company", the second method will make more money but is more risky and the true company can take the domain from you.
Lastly, there are a lot of other things that'll make you more money, make it faster, and give you more control.

Yeah it pays big if you got the right domain. But I wouldn't recommend using Adsense, instead use CPA as there are loads of networks to apply for.
The domain costs $10 and you can make it back in a day, once the actual company asks you to transfer the domain then do it.

very interesting thread i might try squatting again.. is there anyway to keep a domain and not have them repossess it?

Nope, if it violates copyright they have a good chance of taking it from you. Not always, but the majority of the time, and remember if anything they'll just drag you through the mud making you wish you just turned it over.
