That's a really tough question to answer. For me it really depends on how profitable I think the niche will be. I invest more when I see the site is making money and I think it can make more. I only do seo but I'll spend anywhere from $0 to $500 in any given month on a site.

This totally depends on what someone's business is. My business is 100% online, but most of my sites aren't traditional (they are usually product or service based).
Costs are also irrelevant. Mine are around $25,000/mo all in, with revenue higher. Profit per site would probably be a better one to ask - most people have a much lower cost base than me, but obviously it's entirely dependant on what your business actually does, staff you employ etc. I have less than 5 sites right now.

Well, It really depends on the income potential of that particular website...
(Atleast For Me)
I'm not sure what your background is but maybe this will make sense.
Your question is like asking someone how much a car costs. There's so many options. There's street legal, f1, nascar, etc. Street legal includes Honda Civics, Jeeps, Ford, Lexus, BMW, Lamborghinis, etc. An old work van will set you back $300 but those Maybachs or Bugattis will cost millions. It's the same with a business. Business is everything but predictable.
Right back at you, fella.
I'm not interested in anyone's investment or earnings, the only thing I'm interested in is ROI. I've found a business model which offers me a 350% ROI with less than an hour of work every day, along with a couple in mind which would offer me around a 200% with less than an hour investment per month. So yes, I want to compare myself against the big guys and see how I'm doing.
5 yeras ago I was spending around 5 to 10$ of expenses on 100 $ of revenue. Now, it's more like 25%. In other words, it's pretty much the same relation as offline business was.
ROI went from 2000% to 400%.
ROI, again, is relative.
As your business grows, you'll often take on overheads and costs that a one man band operating out of their home won't have, so the "big boys" will often be taking into account costs that others won't be (e.g. office, accounting, legal, entertainment expenses etc.)
Two scenarios:
- You have a method that makes you 500% ROI but can only be scaled to $100/day.
- You have a method that makes you 20% ROI, and can be scaled to $10,000 day.
What would you rather have?
I like this question as I would like to know as well, but a better question might be:
How much % of what you are making do you spend each month?
Maybe that along with niche info would make a better answer.
Such as:
Niche: MNS - spending 20% of income/profit on sites for articles, backlinks, etc.
or
Niche: eCommerce - spending 30% of income/profit on sites for new content (upkeep), backlinks, marketing (ads), etc.

this is actually really informative - seems like when you big timers debate, i learn alot. =)
My campaigns are based around PPC, so my monthly spend is high at $44,000 - $48,000.
The spend is spread over eight campaigns varying in levels of optimization and age. ROI is between 65% - 75% for my campaigns that are going on 3 yrs old and already fully optimized. New testing campaigns carry much lower ROI's.
But like Meathead mentioned, it's all relative to the persons business model as far as what percentage of ROI is going to be solid numbers per campaign.
If you want in with my two favorite CPA networks shoot me a PM and I'll get you in. No cost - just don't send any CC fraud shit. Weekly payouts with $1K a week in leads
Depends on the business model being ran, it could be $1,000 or it could also be $100,000, varies widely.
up to 100$...
domain name thats it

but you see how you newbs who are still better than me at IM are only buying the domain
and people who make more money like meathead are spending thousands per month?
those thousands invested are bringing thousands and thousands back.
What are the main things you usually need to invest in ?
I spend about $100.00 per month at a minimum.
