Jan 2012: Uniques =18K Pageview =73K income =$0..Help Me !!!

Hello everyone,

I run a Fansite for a football team with extremely unique content videos pictures downloads and what nots. I figure its high time i made some money right !

So a months ago i figured i'll put some adsense. well i did and it didnt start well and it didn't end well.
7k+ pageview and 9 clicks i followed everything in this thread

Anyhow i figured i have a sports website,what better than betting. So i go signup get approved and put some ads.
One on top right corner and another at the bottom of the right column.This was about 2 weeks ago.
Today it is 21,258 pageviews 19 clicks and 0 free signups.

So my question is how do you people who run genuine content oriented sites make money.
This site is my long term project. i want it to be an authority website and would like to make some money.
I work daily very hard at it posting about 5 posts daily full of unique writing and visuals.
I mean really all i want is $500 a month and that also primarily for buying software, getting a designer, better hosting etc etc

So i would love it if you smart folks would solve this puzzle for me.

How about Amazon with football shirts/jerseys etc? That's about as targeted as you can get!

First thought is that you are not getting legitimate traffic.

Fathom,I have not don't any back-linking whatsoever however i do have almost 6K dedicated twitter following and a lot of visitors finding my website via google searches using team+player names.Google Loves my site.My pages gets indexed literally within minutes. At times i have seen visitors queries leading them to a page that i created and posted like 7 minutes back

My regular visitors are frm Asia, US and Europe. As diverse as it gets but still no clicks. Just more of my own pocket money being pumped into this

You're thinking too technically, there is more psychology behind this, I mean you don't just get traffic and you add ads then the money starts rolling in, you need a better strategy. Start by analyzing the traffic, see what they are interested in mostly and since it's a football website, the visitors will be interested in the latest results, pictures, videos etc. they're not interested in clicking on ads. I recommend you dropshipping football clothes, amazon won't earn you much as the commission is max 6%.

though i have though abt getting customised football t-shirts sold
but cld never think of how..i even wrote/got-designed a few funny ones

A sponsor who pays x$'s for a spot on the site.

For sure it works like this. At least, I have found a "sponsor" for one of my sites, simply by putting a section "advertise here" on the website. I even did not have to contacted anyone, I showed traffic stats in the section, gave a little sales pitch what the banner on the site can make for certain businesses and one relevant business owner contacted me and bought the space...

So for sure, it is possible. And if you do not want to wait, then think who can benefit from the ad on your site, and contact these people directly, calmly by email, attaching your traffic stats and concrete offer, plus a little of sales pitch. That's it!

Sponsorships are fine and typically are the easiest/most reliable advertising to keep up with. Getting a sponsor is much more difficult. You're going to have to spend even more time every month / 2 months trying to get new sponsors for your site (on top of the work you already do for the content itself).

I recommend you start off with the Amazon affiliate network and see what kind of CTR and conversion you get. If you cloak the links to the product you might have some success. Even if they do not decide to buy your item, you have cookie dropped on a number of people, which should help you earn. Cloak photos like this, cloak links within the text etc.

Use that as a test for what people like. If you see that a LOT of people are clicking cloaked links, then you could shift to CPA offers from ClickBank or whatever, which will earn you more than 6%.

I'd say use Amazon to see what works / sells. If things don't sell, then at least you've cookie dropped. If they do sell, then change half the cloaked links to test the waters and go full force into it if that is successful.

If I we're you I would set some spots on your website for "hire" then company/people will hire the spot and you will get paid and he will probably get a bit traffic, good luck with your website

After careful consideration i have decided to

1>check what amazon products i can find to link with the content in my blogposts and discreetly link them

2> Design and sell Merchandise.As resistancee suggested.I had seen some bigger sports blogs do this earlier and it's time i jumped in.The good thing is that it's a one time hard work.You design and it's there.

and thirdly, I intend to give prime real estate on the Blog for advertising.Make a sponsorship proposal and send it to relevant potentially interested companies.

I think these three things should be enough to keep me occupied for the next two weeks or so The way i see it it has to be a numbers game. the more eggs in your basket the more possible chicks could hatch right ?

Put teasing quotes on the shirts like "LFC 2013 League Champions" before the end of the season.
