Virtually every 'Make Money Online' course, ebook, website, blog, etc. will explain the goal of internet marketing is to have a system that will make you money on autopilot.

2. create articles promoting that product or offer.
3. get traffic to those articles.

The better ebooks, courses and seminars add two extra steps to take advantage of an old marketing adage called the 'Rule of 7'. So, if you've been looking for the answer to "How to make money online?" then here is the formula to follow:

3. entice visitors to submit email address for newsletter.
4. use an email autoresponder to send series of newsletters promoting the paid product.
5. set up a traffic campaign to get visitors to your website who want to buy that product.

If you really want to learn how to make money online, you need to ignore the hype. There is no way that anyone can guarantee that you can make XX amount of money in XX amount of time. There are too many variables that have to be taken into consideration. Everything from how good you are at niche research all the way through how good you are at understanding the material and following instructions.

The most important things you have to ask yourself are "What are your actual expectations?", and "How well do you understand what your actually doing for each step?".

Your expectations will determine how long you'll follow through with the plan. If you expect to make $10,000 in two weeks, and after 3 weeks you still haven't made a sale then you'll probably give up and call it a scam, (That's usually caused by salespages making unrealistic promises). Even more importantly is how well you understand what needs to be done for each step. Even if it is possible to make $10,000 in two weeks, it isn't likely to happen unless you do everything exactly right.

Your expectation shouldn't be to make $10,000 in two weeks. Instead, your goal should be to learn exactly how to do each step necessary for a successful marketing campaign.

So, if you've been searching google, forums, blogs, ebooks, etc. for the answer to "How to make money online?", or even worse looking for "How to Get Rich Quick?", then you're asking the wrong questions. You've probably already found that answer over and over again, but keep ignoring it because that 3 step or 5 step formula I outlined above isn't complete enough for you to understand how to make it work.

Instead you should be asking questions about how to do each of those steps; "How do I find a good product to sell?", "How do I find the best niche to market in?", "How do I set up a website that effectively promotes a product?" "How do I write articles that will lead a prospect to buy?", "How do I entice visitors to submit their emails?", "How do I get visitors to my website that are looking to buy?"

If you search the BHW forum you'll find those questions and many more are answered for free in many threads on this forum.

So many people turn to making money online, but forget that you will need to learn a shitload of stuff to become successful. I hadn't even realized all the stuff that I've learned, until I had to explain what I do to my new business partner.

Unfortunately, most of the new marketers here will ignore this sage advice and go chasing after the next WSO promising them an unreasonable return with little or no effort. Just a tip: most of those WSOs are absolute shit. Sure, there are a few hidden gems out there and some contain some new tricks you probably didn't know...but if you spend most of your time reading these things and taking no action, you're just wasting your time. As GreyWolf indicated, being successful in IM takes patience and lots and lots of time.

See, I did the same thing when I first got started many years ago. I chased too many pipe dreams and got frustrated when they didn't "take". I didn't really scream "SCAM". In my case, I beat myself up for not understanding the method and began to think "I'm just no good at this". Then, suddenly, I happened upon a method that I enjoyed (it was my OWN method - I didn't read about it an ebook) and I focused on it. I was patient and, lo and behold...the money started coming in. I then applied that BHW wisdom to "scale it up" and wouldn't ya know it? I started to make real money. I'm doing very well for myself now. But I had to get out of the mindset GreyWolf is talking about in his post.

Listen to this man. If someone had told me this when I started out, I wouldn't have wasted nearly a year on bullshit.

pick your own way and start doing it, most of the time people just give up without finishing what they planed to do in the beginning. make yourself a schedule on what and when you should be achieving and do it

Yep. that's the point. How to make money online isn't some closely guarded secret. If that's the question you're asking then the answer is simply find something people want and present it to people who are willing to pay for it.

As I said in the first post, the most time tested method for making money online is:

1. find a product to sell.
2. set up a website targeted for people who want to buy that product.
3. entice visitors to submit email address for newsletter.
4. use an email autoresponder to send series of newsletters promoting the paid product.
5. set up a traffic campaign to get visitors to your website who want to buy that product.

The specific ways of coding a website have changed some, but the marketing behind the content of your website is still based on direct marketing rules that have been taught for the last hundred years. The only part of that 5 step formula that's really changed much in the last 15 years is step 5. As new websites and platforms become popular the ways to find your prospects and get the traffic evolves to take advantage of them, but the basic formula always stays the same.

So once you know the formula, you still need to learn and understand the marketing principles behind steps 1 thru 4, and then learn the various traffic generation methods available to accomplish step 5. You can even skip steps 3 and 4 for things like adsense and many CPA networks, but the marketing principles are still the same. Those marketing principles are what can make the difference between success and failure.

Very true. The question is too broad and there are countless answers.

I'm sticking to 1 or at most 2 methods at a time and find answers to do it right. There is success in every method whether you do it as exactly as it is or with a twist.

I remember when I used to search for "how to make money online". All I found was pages selling ebooks of how to make money online, most with an e-mail opt-in.

Whilst there could be any number of reasons why its not converting, if your average visitor is like my wife was when she was wedding dress shopping, she'll be mainly looking for ideas online, then looking for a local dress shop to find a dress.

Assuming you are promoting an affiliate campaign of some description rather than selling your own dresses, can you have a look at the network stats to see what the average conversion rate is? Might be the affiliate campaign you have chosen to promote rather than your own site.

Then there's all the usual stuff like what's your bounce rate, are you hitting the right price point, blah blah blah.

the biggest issue i find with this site is that I get lost in the content. So much intriging ways to make some coin but it difficult for me to stay focussed on one and see it through when i see another way that seems better and then I go down that road. rinse and repeat

Great point regarding expectations, it's one of the major mistake for tons of
beginner and one of the biggest one. There's a lot of new comer failed and
start jump to the next big thing because it failed meet their expectations from
the first place.

I meant seriously, as an example are you hoping only to spend $20 on PPC with two
campaigns and asking for profitable campaign without any split testing, tracking
and optimizing? If that's your expectation, I'll feel sorry for that guy. It's just didn't
work like that anymore. Threat IM as a business, and you'll go much far from your
current stand.
