Default The Summer Of Money - $10,000 in 3 Months

Today begins the Summer of Money. I will attempt over the next three months to make $10,000. I have all the tools I need at my disposal, and a head on my shoulders that's not too full of shit.

Right now, I plan on focusing on three areas: building and outsourcing simple business websites (conversion to wordpress if existing/seo/social integration), custom Facebook pages, Google Local SEO. I will do this by analyzing companies and leads who are in need those products, and directly pitching them via e-mail, phone, and Facebook. I have Dragon NaturallySpeaking 11, TheBestSpinner, GPscraper 2011, Tweet attacks, XgenSEO, Scrapebox, SEO PowerSuite, and anything else I need that can be found on the BHW download page.

This project/experiment is going to involve a lot of reading, a lot of learning, a lot of hard work, and hopefully, a lot of moneymaking. I've yet to determine the prices I will charge, but I think that will come with time and depend on the niche and the company, as well as how much I think they can afford.

Some background about myself, I've been an Internet marketer for a little over a year now, mostly with offline clients that I've met through networking and other methods. I was working as a contractor for a PR and Marketing firm, but things didn't work out too well because of all the bureaucracy and back-and-forth that takes place in an agency like that. The money was good, but I didn't feel like I was working for myself anymore, as I now had a boss and was accountable to someone other than the business I was doing the job for.

I'm creating this thread as a basic journal entry to seek advice and guidance, as well as to make me feel accountable to my goals

I really feel this needs to have the most attention paid to it. If you defeat yourself, how can you accomplish anything?

Good luck on your trip! Offline marketing has been my beast lately too. Its interesting.

Tips: Have a system in place. Are you outsourcing some stuff? Doing it all yourself? Outsourcing some stuff is highly recommended if not at the beginning, soon after so that you don't overload yourself and get bogged down. Have a professional system to put the client through from the get go so you don't look noobie. Invoices with a logo, a basic contract etc., They are brick and mortar so they are used to brick and mortar things like contracts etc.,
Focus! Thats my biggest issue right now. There are so many things that we can do as internet marketers that its hard to focus on what to pitch. You get lost in the sell without direction. Recommend picking 1 or 2, with maybe an upsell later for the rest, ~or~ unless they ask for the rest then of course

Practice talking to friends or family members that are internet stupid. Try and figure out a way to explain what you do and how it would help the business in everyday terms so that anyone can understand without the jargon.

Your idea to find leads online and pitching via email/phone/facebook is admirable, however I would recommend also checking offline. Look for the businesses that are advertising on adwords in your area for your target niches. Check out their sites to see if they are making the most bang for their buck - usual failure is failing to capture visitor info via email list. Thats a good small cost in with a business. By using adwords you know they are spending money on marketing and they are trying to make the internet thing work for them. Another place to look is those little coupon books that come around, or the business directory in the classifieds for skilled trades. Those people are spending money on advertising. Its amazing how many don't advertise a website.

This post is getting too long. 1 last one - Sell yourself at a decent rate, don't sell yourself short thinking oh it will only take you 10 minutes to set that mailing list up. So what! Thats because YOU know what you are doing. Thats WHY they have to pay YOU. So don't bother undercutting yourself. In the long run you will regret it. Competing on price is a LOSING battle. Compete on service and results.
    I'll shush now

The market is big enough for everyone I believe, and I have already made a lot of progress which I will be posting in a post after this.

I appreciate the long post man, never apologize, especially when it is filled with good information like that. I want this thread to provide information for everyone to make $10,000 as well. I am not going to hold anything back here, so if I am successful, then you guys should be too. A rising tide raises all boats. I like your idea for lead generation, going to into the adwords and seeing who advertising, I have picked up an even better strategy which I am going to share in the day one summary below. And also, good idea about keeping the price high, I rather make more profit on less work. I have also been lining up people for outsourcing from the hire a free lancer section on here (cherry picking other people's posts) and fiverr and on other IM forums.

Default Re: The Summer Of Money - $10,000 in 3 Months

So I was keeping this great journal in DragonPad and then my computer crashed I lost everything, so day oneís first lesson is to use Microsoft Word and to save frequently.

Iím not sure where to start now, so Iíll just go on with what I mentioned in the above post about the awesome place to find new leads: Groupon, Living Social, Gilt Group, and other daily deal sites! You know these business owners are willing to do innovative things and experiment with their marketing tactics. Also when they first do a Groupon, they see such an influx of business that they are willing to find out what else there is out there they didn't know about.

Other ways I'm finding the businesses, in addition to advertisements (businesses that spend money to advertise, spend money), I googled ďcity business directoryĒ and was able to find a listing of email addresses and registered agents provided by my city.gov website, and itís even broken down by category, so I just went to restaurant and bars and took all the email addresses and imported them into business specific iContact email lists (iContact because you donít need opt-in). Now I have email lists for each demographic and when I am ready to, I can send them mass emails. Iíve also registered a website ($10) for ďCITYNAME Social Media and MarketingĒ bought a Skype-in number with local area code ($18 for 3 months) ,so that they know I am not just a random company spamming them. I want to appear as local business, just trying to help out my other local businesses. I think this will increase my conversion rates.

Iíve also I also picked up an awesome trick, calling businesses a few minutes after they open my e-mail. How ddo you know when they open the email? Using http://www.spypig.com/ you can embed an invisible image into an e-mail and it will tell you when it is opened and read. I'm going to use a couple variations where I call a business a couple minutes after they read my message, and while itís still fresh on their mind, to see if it works.
I've also selected a few businesses that are lacking either a custom FB page, have an unclaimed google local page, no mobile website, or terrible seo/flash. I have started calling them, using a different voice each time (I am going to outsource this to fiverr) and asking where their website is, or how I find their Facebook page, or complaining about how I'm on my phone and I can't see their website or menu because it's poorly designed or in flash. I am seriously using psychological warfare to make sales, and I think it might just work.

This leads me to my next big realization, and to what might ultimately become my foot in the door for a lot of these businesses: mobile websites. These days, pretty much every company has a website already, and even if the site sucks, they still have one and may not want to pay for another or for SEO (which is a tired service to sell because it's so saturated, with businesses harassed daily with phone calls and e-mails from people like us lol).
This is different though for mobile sites, the market is rapidly expanding and cellphones are on pace to become the number one way people access the internet, especially for restaurants and bars, because before people go to them, they may try to find out the specials, hours, menus, etc. Every single restaurant or bar is going to need a mobile optimized website. It's like a 1990s for web site building, except this time, you don't have to explain what the Internet is. I think this is going to be one of my main areas of focus, because the websites are really easy to make and they literally sell themselves.

All you have to do is create a sample mobile site for a business and then schedule a 10 minute meeting with them. You just show them theirs which will generally be pretty illegible, against the mobile version on your iPhone or Andriod and they can understand instantly that they need a mobile website.
This seems to be a really hot market right now, with mobile sites going for $300-$400 plus $29-$49 per month management and updating fee. Which means I would only need to sell a little more than 20 to make my $10,000! Sounds pretty easy, plus donít forget about upsells of the FB pages, google local places optimization, etc. I've seen people rightfully complain that BHW doesnít have a mobile section and itís really a shame that we donít.

Here are some resources Iíve gathered:
    Mobile websites: http://www.mobisitegalore.com/pack_pricing.htm
    Simple local business websites: http://www.homestead.com/
Local business websites with mobile sites too: http://www.weebly.com/
    mobile coupons: http://www.hhpage.com/site/?page_id=171
    mobile website simulator: http://mobilesimulator.info/
wp touch to convert wordpress to mobile: http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/wptouch/
What to include on a mobile page:
    -Logo
-Phone number big and so you can click and easily dial (which you demonstrate for them in meeting)
-Box for the coupons, special offer, etc, that can be changed every week/month.
    -Like to main website
    -Business Address
    -Google Map of their location

Script for calling businesses that were featured on deal website and setting up a meeting:
"Hi my name is [first name], I am a local business owner and I saw your offer on Groupon today, but noticed that you donít seem to have a mobile website. Many people, myself included, read their Groupon emails on their phone and click the link to your page. I'm interested in sharing with you how a mobile website could enhance promotions like these..."

(See what they say) Then tell the owner: "I will create a version of your current page of your current website for you that is mobile ready, all I ask is for a 10 minute meeting so I can show you the mobile site and share the value of having one with you.
    Price Points:
$300 with $29 per month hosting to clients.
Mobile designs can go for $497.00 with no hosting

    Businesses To Go After:
Any companies that have high search volume for people who are not at a computer such as, locksmiths, restaurants, bars, pizzerias, dentists, sushi restaurants, etc.
TIP I didnít know: Google Keyword tool has an ďAdvancedĒ option for looking at searching only from mobile devices!

    Day 2 notes: 4/27/11

Today, I will continue my research into the mobile market and choose 10 businesses in my city to target. I want to see what kind of rate of conversion I can get. I'm also going to go back and get in contact with all of my previous clients and check up on them, to see if they need any of the services I now offer. I think that people who have already given me money are statistically the most likely give me money again. Yesterday during my research I peaked at 226 tabs open in chrome (which is probably why my computer crashed). I've also picked up a WSO on Kindle e-book publishing. Just as with mobile devices, e-books are rapidly expanding. Amazon is lowering the prices of Kindles, which is already the number one selling product on Amazon. In addition, Android devices come preloaded with the Kindle store, and more than 300,000 phones are activated EVERY DAY!

Outsourcing: I'm looking to completely outsource everything I'm doing, basically coming a salesman and manager of my employees. Why become an expert on something, when there is already someone out there who spent thousands of hours specializing and learning a specific skill. Obviously this is known to many, but I've always kind of still done stuff myself. I found a good web/wordpress designer, a reliable graphic designer, and I'm not sure who or what else I need.

    Software and trials:
I downloaded The Action Machine 3 from the download section here and it's helping with my productivity.
I began a trial of Camtasia Studio, in case I want to record any of the things I'm doing, for sharing or replaying later.

Wow...3 days and $2500 thus far, most of it secured in residual monthly income.

This is an eye-opener for any newbie to IM. Perseverance, tools, and an action plan, and socialmediaking is already 25% of the way to his goal for the next 3 months.

Following this post and implementing what I can by my local market. A great way to prove the old adage of "lead by example".

Here is the invoice I just sent off. I use Freshbooks, where you can have 3 clients for free. You can set up payment via paypal or add a processor, but I always just delete the clients instead of adding more. Also, most businesses like to pay by check, so instead of emailing the invoice through the freshbooks system, I save the pdf and then email it as an attachment. It includes my logo and address, which they then just snail mail a check to.

Here is a copy of the invoice:

Interesting. Good luck. Hold yourself accountable, but don't be too tough on yourself. Most important thing is the learning experience and pushing on with the new data gathered and being more effective.

Well for this particular client, you may have noticed I billed as "Reverse SEO"

This is a little trick I thought up for finding companies that need reputation management. What you do is monitor the business section of a large local newspaper and pay attention to companies that have scandals reported. Google their company name, and if the articles outrank their website, or dominate the first page, you can contact them and see if they want your help in burying the negative press. They will typically pay a premium because they just want the bad press gone, and because they may not know anyone else who does work like that. i'll give your more details in your pm.

I hold learning as one of the key points, but there is no such thing as success without failure, or at least the chance of it. I hold myself accountable to the community, to prove that I can do something like this with all of the knowledge I have gained from here. Thank you though.

Sorry to be hijacking your thread socialmediaking, but I want to respond to eterno78

I have had 0 success with emailing restaurants. From my experience, if they are high end - they work on their image already and have someone they trust. If they are not, then they do not know the importance of SEO, mobile websites etc, because they think that they are "offline". And you will not convince them of the opposite via email. Especially since the email they have online is the one used for reservations, which means that you are writing the garcons and not the owners.

I haven't disappeared or anything, just extremely busy, and I will update more in depth tomorrow. I have been streamlining a system for making everything in house or being able to set up partners for outsourcing. I've found a good facebook wordpress theme that will make it easy, and have acquired a script for making mobile websites. i also have a google places cheat sheet I found on the download forum. I will post all links when I get a chance. I am having my website images being created now for the sales page and just where people will be directed.

Here is the first draft, what do you guys think?

so do you only offer 'reverse SEO' or do you do regular seo for these businesses as well?

can you go over your sale process, do you negotiate price, do you do it 50/50 through phone and email?
some more examples would be great, already subscribed to your thread, keep it up this is great :0

Sorry if I’ve been missing in action, but it's only because I've been working my ass off. I had a couple of pending projects that came do and also because I've been working on the mobile sites and Facebook pages. I don't have a lot of time because I have a meeting at 1 PM today and have to create my first mobile site and Facebook page for the meeting.

I met this potential client when I was making reservations for the restaurant. I happened to ask to whom I was speaking on the phone, and it turned out to be the manager. I mentioned that I was trying to access the website from my phone and found it difficult, because the text was so small. I then casually mentioned that I happen to me mobile sites. I didn't push it hard or try to make a sale, I just mentioned that I had a local company, and when she asked I told her the name. When I went to restaurant for my reservation, after I ate, I asked the manager was there and just introduce myself and told her that I really enjoyed my meal. A couple days afterwards, I called during a non-busy time and asked about a mobile website and the Facebook page. I explained to her that there already 120 searches from mobile phones per month for her restaurant. When I explained how her menu is in PDF and hard to read her interest definitely went up. So long story short, I'm going to a meeting at 1PM and will report what happens afterwards.

I'm looking to sell Facebook page and a mobile site for $397 each or $697 for both, plus a $50 monthly fee. I was actually surprised that she seemed to think $50 a month was low. I also mentioned Google places listing management and reviews, etc. for an additional $397 plus monthly fees. However, I am not going to focus on that, because it's not as cut and dry as the Facebook page and mobile site. I hate having to do a bunch of work that never ends, the Facebook and the mobile site, they will just be done, and aside from updates I won't have to do anything else.

Sorry for the delay in updating the thread. Things have been pretty crazy! I went to that meeting and I did pretty well considering it was my first one. They were interested in the mobile website, but I didn't really have any documentation like contracts with me to make the next move. That is kind of crucial in a selling situation, actually being able to sell the product! duh... I also got distracted because I went in there trying to sell the website and what these people really needed was an upgraded website with some SEO and some linkbuilding. I really want to stay focused on the mobile and the facebook so I turned down the business, which is kind of dumb, but it might just work out. They also could use a facebook page which I think I could get them to buy, they weren't impressed with the one that I made that mocked their current website because they actually don't like their current website that much. I really should have just made it look the way I normally do and had a working example of Fan-Only content. I ended the meeting after about 40 minutes in a pretty good place, they were interested in all of my services, all I needed to do was follow up with them.

I was a little disappointed though that the lady wasn't super excited, but I left anyway without trying to make a hard sell. On my way home I saw a restaurant that had just opened and noticed their WiFi sign and so I decided I would try it and get some work done at the same time. So as I was eating, I began to research the restaurants website (non-existent) and the facebook page (10 likes). I was all dressed up still and had my briefcase and figuring it was a small place, inquired as to whether the owner or a manager was there. He told me yes and that he would send him over in a little.

So when the guy came out, I just pitched him the mobile, fb page and google local listings page. I showed him the fb page and mobile site that I had prepared for the other restaurant, and he said, "oh You're doing XBusiness' stuff?" He was really impressed because they are one of the nicest restaurants in town. I said "yeah we are working with them now on theirs." I think this created enough social proof, and he was impressed. So a tip is that you don't actually need to do a specific pitch for that business, but if you can show them one for a real business in their area, they may actually want it even more.

Since the restaurant was so new, he wasn't interested in mobile, but he was very interested in the facebook page! I did agree to do it for $297+100 in food exchange because the restaurant was actually pretty good. I told him I wanted half of the payment up front and half upon completion. When I got home, I emailed a contract from the fb ignition package (which has been removed from bhw but can be purchased on wf) and a couple of days after he told me to come pick up the signed copy and get the check.

A lesson from that is that you should a) never give up and b) you don't need to have a mobile site for that specific business, just some high quality portfolio work.

I had written this last week but didn't have a chance to post it. I have some more exciting, I am posting this from 30,000 feet in the air on an airplane. I am on my way to San Francisco, California. My sister lives here and all of the businesses are really progressive and tech savvy so I decided I want to try and sell them out here and pay for my trip. I will let you guys know how it goes! I've spent this flight on chat with my designer having a company put together. I bought a (415) skype in number and am having the business cards designed as we speak so they can be rush printed from vista print in the morning.

When I get a chance, I will try and update you guys on my journey! Thanks for the support, being accountable to you guys makes me want to work harder and make sure I succeed.
