Default zero to 7k per month

I know this is nothing too new, but I wanted to share my experiences. I hope it helps people feel inspired that this stuff can be done, and you really can be making good money online and get the freedom you need from theis whole online game.

First off I'm in the UK and I thought that this would be a huge disadvantage. As it turns out this works to my advantage quite often, as most of you guys in the US are well ahead of businesses in the UK

So basically what I do is advise small businesses on how to market their business online. Like I said nothing new but I built this business from 10.58 when I bought my first domain and hosting from one.com about 4 years ago. And the brief explanation below is how I manage to net about 6k a month even after taxes. So If you want to do the same this is what I did.

    1. Get a domain that suits your industry, but don,t think too small, before long you will be getting referral's outside of your local area. something like ezewebmarketing.com/uk/net or whatever is great (not my domain by the way)

    2. Set up a professional looking site, yes you need to have a call to action on there, offering some sort of freebie, but you need to make sure it is not looking like some crappy squeeze page. Take a look at constant contact or other similar sites for inspiration for a site that appeals to small businesses. If you cant do web design very well, or you dont feel comfortable in this area. Outsource to some of the guys on this forum explicit, richman, and loads of other guys here offer exceptional services for less than $150

    3. Offer services on your site that small businesses need, such as web design, seo, online marketing , email marketing etc. Ill go into more detail on this later

    4. Get some business cards made up, but make sure they look professional and they are on good quality stock paper, dont go for cheap and shitty, remember first impressions count. Also get some small post card type cards made up highlighting what you do, and offering some sort of discount.

    5. Get your site listed on google maps, and do basic seo for your services in your area. you need to be able to demonstrate they you can do what you say you do. Ie you deed to be found on google

    6. Get yourself to these business networking meetings, if you dont know any just search google for business networking in your area, there will be loads fo them. When you go to these meetigns though, dont be too pushy, just have conversations and speak to people about what they struggle with online. They will be struggling with something so set up a follow up meeting and go see them. When you go see them, make sure you take a laptop and have an order form already made up that you can just type their details in if they give you an order. Search the download section for business kits and you will find all the docs you need to run a professional business.

    7. Network as often as you can. this is where you will get most of your inbound business from over time. All ways offer to do something for the people who organise the event, as these people know everyone and can get you in the door with most of their attendees.

    8. Forget charging 5000 a month like these gurus say is achievable. Go for regular monthly payments for doing simple online marketing stuff, like link building, social media set up, email marketing, landing page design etc. I charge anywhere between, 100 and 800 per month for my services. Anything larger and you have to be approaching seriously larger companies.

    9. Look on the forum for IBP and seo power suite, these two pieces of software will be able to produce proffesional looking reports for your clients within a few minutes and even tell you what you need to do for them

    10. Make sure your prices are reasonable. If it is too cheap you will put them off, if you are too expensive it will put them off. I find most businesses I set up a meeting with will pay 200 per month for basic seo, and reporting. 500 per month for seo, email marketing and social media set up and maintenance. etc

    11. Email your contacts regularly with special offers. For example you can find some fantastic corporate type video templates on video hive for like $25. you can even get the people on video hive or this forum to customise it to your clients needs for $50. You can then charge your client over 500 for these type of videos.

    12. All ways make sure you go for the monthly retainer, rather than the upfront fee. You do this for two reasons. 1. the customers prefer it and are more likely to say yes. 2. you want to make sure you can eat next month as well, you only have a small amount of time each month and you can not rely on having to sell an new contract to pay rent. Get your essential outgoings covered first then experiment as much as you like with pricing etc.

    13. Do what you say. Business owners talk and you dont want them talking about you in a negative light. especially if they go to the same networking meetings

    14. Price your jobs up, and make sure that referral's are part of the contract. example. If I do a good job for you and you are satisfied, would you be willing to put me in touch with three of your contacts that you know could benefit from my services? If so build it into the contract.

I hope this helps. There are people on this forum who could be a gold mine for you. Make sure you use this forum to its best possible advantage, take action and you will reap the rewards.

In order fro you to succeed you need to do two things. Take action. Continue to put the effort in.

Thank you to everyone on this forum, for yoru help, advice and friendship. Thanks largley to you guys I now have a LTD company employing 2 part time staff.

Go out there and take ownership of your lives offering people the benefit of your knowledge.

ahh, now that is good money! I have loads of offline experience and I wanted to put something together for those people in a similar situation. I know it took me ages to figure out how to leave my day job and do this shit full time, and now I have much more free time, and no boss. Good enough for me. But I wouldn't mind bumping it to 7 k a week!

Hey don't let age stand in your way.

If you know someone within your network who is maybe a little older, you can do the leg work and be the brains behind the operation, and they can front it.

But hey, don't get too down about being 17, you are already way ahead of the game, just by being here, you have loads of years left to hit this market.

Another thing you could do is approach seo/online marketing companies, be straight about your age and offer to do something for them for free to show them that you are this online marketing whizz kid. As soon as they see your results, they will want to talk more to you. At this point say you want 10-20 of the seo spend for the client, and you will do all the work.

Most ad agencies/marketing companies/pr companies outsource. They ususally pay 50% of the client seo spend to outsourcers, so you never know

    Thanks rprabu.

swoffire, I am very interested in your project I too live in the UK and I am really thinking about doing so I would love to hear form your experiences. I do have a lot of questions but at the moment, how do you charge the services? Do you have like an online shopping cart which bills a set price each month for each client? How did you go about creating the contracts? What kind of stuff do you put in the contracts?

    Thanks

I try to charge all services using the paypal subscription service. It just saves having to run around chasing for payments. I charge based on a 80% profit margin, so basically what ever I buy in here or other online resources, only comes to about 20% of what I charge my client. I create customer landing pages with the paypal link in for them to order through, no online shopping facility as each package is different. I just use a standard order from, and some terms and conditions I put together based on what I found on other seo company websites.

I think its quite important to not over think this, if you get out and speak to potential clients you will soon realise that you know 1000% more than they do.

Sounds brilliant to me. How much would say 200 a month cost you in paypal fees though? I noticed you said your LTD now. How long have you been doing this for now? Also, I didn't think it was possible to get google map listings for all niches?

your right it isnt, But its all about showing your customers value.

If you can show that you have been active then they will be impressed.

Ive been doing it around 4 years, and only in the last 12 months do i seem to have cracked it. the fees are about 3% of everthing that goes through from paypal

The OP is describing the formula normal brick and mortar businesses use that turn over more than 1 million a year.

Referrals are the lifeline of many businesses.

    Many areas in Canada are also untapped. Many businesses slap up a static website that some advertising company promotes to them. The businesses buy these websites because;
    1. They don't know any better
    2. Their competitors don't know any better and bought a website before they did

Its quite funny actually. The retail I work for, all the "upper management" agreed and bought one of these crappy sites for over $10,000. I laughed and told my boss I could have done better for $100. He was not impressed with me and thought I was lying to be an asshole.

I understand exactly what you are saying a lot of businesses don't wanna pay even an extra 200 per month on top of their current advertising... I don't know how much to charge for the service either but 75 is way too low.

Thanks for all the comments. I think the most important thing here is realising that this can be done. We all have knowledge that is far greater than 90% of business owners. Take the low hanging fruit and dont worry about these guru types that are billing 50k a month. Yes sure its nice, but playing with the kids, going to the cinema and leading a health lifestyle where you have choice is much nicer.

Hugh - Keep going at it, for everyone that turns you down at 75 per week, why not try billing them per hour. I often win contracts by giving prospects a choice of how many hours I do for them. I charge between 20 and 60 per hour. As long as you can get the job done and show results (which you can with members in this forum offering fantastic services) then the amount of hours YOU put in is irrelevant.

Get them to look at you as another member of staff that they are not paying national insurance on, sick leave, holiday pay etc, rather than another costly marketing or advertising expense

Thx for that swoffire. My target rate is 250 per month but as we are new 75 is a very reasonable cost to get punters interested.

Point being if we own all the links and link juice pulling the plug is something they wont contemplate.

Incidentally are u based in SE?

    Cheers

Posting this particular thread was fantastic timing (for me) as I'm currently in the process of setting up a multi-service web marketing/development company in Essex!

Since you've already had some success in setting up this kind of business, maybe you'd be able to help me out while I'm just starting out? As we all know 80% of startups fail in their first 2 years.

In return, I have vast experience working with FaceBook and CL (both WH and BH, not long ago I was pushing $900 every day for 6 months with Facebook) and could help you setup some online campaigns.

I suppose it would kind of be like a mentoring tradeout. Either way, I wish you all the best and thanks for the share!
