Default How To Make Money Online - Getting Started

One of the biggest and most frequently asked question online in the Internet Marketing industry is "How do I get started".

Most people, acquire a cheap "Make money online" E-book and then they read half way through it and think "well this helped me none.. I just don't understand".

I know some people will disagree, but breaking into Internet Marketing and being successful takes determination and is very hard to do.

FIRST OFF: I see too many people trying to just make money. They're only in it for the money and only want to make some sales.

This is a big problem. Why?

No one comes online looking to randomly buy things. Everyone is looking for an answer to a problem they're having or looking for a solution to something. Remember.. your job is not to make a sale but to solve someone's problem and in turn.. that is what will make you a sale.

So what do you need to make money online?

    #1: You need a clue.
Anyone can search google for answers to making money online, but you've got to have an understanding of what you're doing or you'll always be running around searching for answers.

    #2: You need a plan/idea.
Brainstorm! You need to have a mapped out vision in your head of your business. Do you plan on purchasing a domain and starting a product on dog health care, buying domains and selling them, selling home made materials on e-bay, writing articles, etc. There are so many options out there for what you want to do, but you've got to have an idea and a plan before you can start making money. Brainstorm in your head and think to yourself..

    "What am I good at?"
    "What am I knowledgeable about?"
"What is something I really enjoy doing/talking about?"
"How do I plan on providing information on this product?"

    #3: You need a website.
Unless you plan on marketing to forums and groups (which isn't a very well played out business plan) you need to establish a website. Before you start thinking "I have no money for a website". You can always start a blogger. www.blogger.com

If you're looking at starting a website, I would highly recommend Host Gator to beginners and novice marketers. The options of managing/running your website are great and at such a low cost, it's hard for me to refuse Host Gator when ever I plan on getting a website.

Hosting at Host Gator starts out at $4.95 so this is great for a beginner's website or just starting out.

Now comes the part I had trouble with when I began. Website Design/Website creation. I am not a HTML savvy guy.. believe me. While I am sure there are many sources you could hire for you to create your website, I believe everyone should learn to create their own material at one point or another.

You need a website with an easy design/layout because anything hard to read or something that doesn't look professional will have a much lower conversion rate than what you hope for.

Remember, when you're writing your sales copy/creating your product... you're speaking out to people that have a problem and are in need of a solution.

Make Money E-Book - People are broke.. who wants to be broke?
Train Your Dog E-Book - A loud and undisciplined dog is a danger to you and everyone around you.
A Guide To Smart Car Buying - Learn to save gas and to save earth

Do you see what I am saying? You have to speak to people in the certain niche you're trying to sell in, because you're trying to fix a problem someone has or answer a question that someone has.

In my opinion, fear and hype are two of the biggest sellers there are.

Trying to sell a vehicle? Examine your audience.. a young man will be interested in something fast and loud and will want to impress the ladies in his hot new ride. You have to know who you're selling too and get them hyped, because a hungry crowd always comes back for more.

Don't get me wrong now.. I am not saying a website is the only way you will ever make money period, I am just saying that this is probably the best way to create an automated source of income.

    #4: Patience/Consistence.
If making money online was as easy as snapping your fingers.. everyone would be e-millionaires.
So many people quit trying once they find out how much work is actually involved in creating an online business and being good at what you do. You have got to keep consistent.

You've got a killer website but no sales, why not?
Get inside your market's head and view your website not from your point of view but theirs. Do not think "how will this make me money" but "will this solve my problem"?

Be consistent and always add new fresh content and possibly new products to keep your customers/readers coming back for more. A hungry crowd can never get enough no matter how much they spend.

Now then, here are some suggestions as to when you do get a business up and running, but are not mandatory.
    E-MAIL LISTS!

If someone opts in to your e-mail list.. chances are.. they're interested in what you've got or curious. A lot of websites don't offer a chance to opt in to an e-mail list and a lot of money is to be made off this. A lot of people who see a website once won't purchase something because they simply don't know the source. A couple of e-mails possibly sending out some free methods/tactics or newsletters might change Curious George into a buyer.

Remember.. Internet Marketing is not an overnight task.

You can either sell your own or someone else's product.

If you're new to the game.. I don't recommend purchasing any products, because I guarantee you that 75% of the information you just paid for can be found on a forum for free.

The more consistent you are, the more determined you are, the more it will show. Don't give up just because you don't hit the lottery over night because like I said.. if making money online was truly "That easy", everyone would be doing it.

    Until next time.

    Yeah - but.

As a primer it's sort of OK. OTOH it does carry messages - like use this hosting company, click on my forum...

The basic problem for most noobs is that they don't know what questions to ask, so telling them to search the net for free information is a bit telling someone to perform brain surgery without defining brain or surgery.

There are lots more noobs at the moment because of 'credit crunch' and loads of people are looking to make money on the side. 99% have heard the phrase 'Internet Marketing' and don't have a clue what it means - basically because it covers such a wide range of activity. So, by all means make this a sticky but add a health warning that it's VERY basic and it's only useful as a jump off point.

To answer the second point - noobs flail about looking for info - Google throws up stuff in this forum for all sorts of IM information, so they land here and take one look at the free ebooks and it's heaven with the gates shut!

I believe that learning at least rudimentary HTML and CSS is the first step to becoming a successful internet marketer. There are exceptions to this rule, but I don't know many that have made a career of doing any kind of marketing online that haven't at least known the basics.

It is definitely a time saver.

It takes me forever to put in custom codes and customize web code because I simply just don't know how to do most of the things by heart yet.

it may not be mandatory but...

Less Time=More Time To Work On Other Things
More Time To Work On Other Things=More Money so yes.. learning html/css is a very good time investment on everyone's part which I am trying to learn now.

http://www.w3schools.com/html/default.asp is where I have been snooping around lately trying to learn more about coding and web development. This seems like a great resource for beginners.

I do think these are important - I'm taking an online "design your own website" class which is basically HTML for beginners, from my local tech school...BUT...
I also think that if you have a couple of hundred bucks to spend getting someone to design a decent looking minisite for you, then that should tide you over for a while. And there are plenty of internet marketers like Yanik Silver and Armand Motin who claim they're completely web-clueless and yet, quite rich.
    Bastards.
I mean hooray! Good for them!

Well, the main problem with new people is..

They see these commercials and hear about their buddies making money then they think.. "well they did it.. so I can do the same". Everyone thinks it's as easy as snapping your fingers.

I'd agree with learning a bit of html and maybe even some php - but there are a whole load of website creation software packages which will do the css for you. In fact, other than adding stuff like paypal buttons (which is easily available code anyway) you probably need very little web programming knowledge at all.

Far more important is defining a market and having a product to sell into that market.

    I see it like this:

You can have the greatest website and the greatest product in the world, but without the customers your website is nothing but another hosting bill.

While it's not necessary to be successful to learn the basics of HTML, it's implied that this saves a ton of time. When I first started and needed to simply change a few colors or codes, you have no idea how much time I could have saved had I just known a few simple codes.

Even things as small as implementing pictures or affiliate links and moving them around are still things that are good to know that a lot of people don't know.

There's not many things in this world that are "REQUIRED" to make money online, but there are millions of things that will help you along the way.

Indeed - but 'the first thing' you need to know? Sure, it's helpful - but if you use a wysiwyg editor these things are so simple that a 5 year old could do it (in fact - an awful lot of websites look like they were done by a 5 year old ).

You are right when you say that there are many things along the way but I was talking about priorities and learning to code isn't top of the tree.

I definately second this, the number one problem newbies have with making money is finding one thing and sticking to it.

They start one thing after they dont make money the first day, the flip to something else and never give it enough time.

yea knowing how to build sites, promote and marketing are very important.. sticking to one thing needs to be stressed the most

You don't need to know how to design websites. I couldn't write a website from scratch if it was a gun to my head. I don't even know who writes from scratch these days anyway. If you have a host which supports PHP and you know how to install WordPress then you are pretty much good -- no need to worry about anything else. WordPress has a highly supportive community, easy to use, comes out the box with SEO features, has thousands of plugins for more functionality, and a ton of developers at hand. You can find all the free templates you need to make your website look professional, clean, or well designed. And WordPress is 100% FREE.

    Hi all!

I think it was said in another thread, the key to winning in this game is to just f*ckin DO IT! Get in there and mix it up a bit, read and study all you can, get stuff online regardless of how cr*ppy it looks and just keep on hacking away.

The KEY, though, is to DO IT!

    Cheers!

That's correct. So many people are so stuck on "God I need to make some money now!" but none of those people truly focus on exactly how they will make their money.. their customer.

While true our ultimate goal is to make money, we can not do that by simply flashing products in people's faces. There has to be a reason for the person to buy that product and they have to feel like it is sincerely the end to all of their problems.

Since this has been raised from the dead....
I just wanted to say that I think if you aren't willing to learn html, php, how to putt, how to wash dishes, etc, you are showing a lack of discipline.

I would make a punt that those that lack discipline are doomed to eventual failure. You may score some initial success but if you haven't got the drive to press on you will move on to the next "biggest thing", never conquering something that may have worked.

I may have had one to many "beverages" to get the point across satisfactorily but hopeful it will reach some. zzzzzzzzz...

I have no idea who you are and I really don't care.. my personal life is none of your fucking business as far as I'm concerned though. Yeah, I'll admit I had a rough financial crunch where there was nothing I could do about it and I had to sell a few things and I had to take some very crummy shitty jobs to get back on track.

My car just recently had $1k of work, my rent got increased, my grandma died and I had to help out with that, my mom was going through a tough time financially at the same time so I felt obligated to help with that and a few other things came up right around the holidays.. not that any of that shit is your business.

So I see you're a new member here.. that's nice. Let me give you some advice.. try asking before you start assuming.

I give people advice so hopefully they don't ever make the same stupid ass mistakes I did two years ago.. such as getting raped with Google Adwords for over $600. The most advice I've seen you give on here is how to try to cheat Google out of money with Adwords.

Why are you attacking a member of BHW for no reason? do you think that you will look good for your rep or something?

Personally i think your an asshole for posting this shit just to hurt someones rep for your own gain/pleasure. To bad that BHW seem to be filled with sad mofo's like you lately, only out to hurt other people and never bring anything in the community.

Hostgator is what I use as well. Dont do the $4.95 because you can only host 1 domain. the $9.95 package allows unlimited domains.

Search G for a hostgator coupon code. You can find them for the $9.95 deal where you do not have to pay the first 3 months up front. The $4.95 you have to pay the first 3 months upfront so it is actually a higher upfront cost.

Im not here to try and tell anyone how to make money online. But one thing Ive learned over the years is, sell yourself before you try to sell a product. If you site visitors trust you, and know that you have their best interests at heart, they are far more likely to get out a credit card when you recommend a product.

If you were looking to buy a 2nd hand car, who would you buy it from? A good friend that you trusted, or a ripoff car salesman? Thats no different from selling products online, IMO.
