Question Ice Cream Men -How Much money do they make?

Earlier today, an Ice Cream Truck came through our neighborhood, and within a few minutes there was a crowd of almost 20 customers.

That got me thinking...Assuming they own the Truck, their only expenses would be the Gas, and Ice Cream, right? Is the Ice Cream business lucrative?

if they own the truck it could be quite profitable, however, there are only a few months of the year that they're making this profit. Unless you own an ice cream shop as well I don't see how it could be worth it. Well, maybe if you have a different full time job that has summers off.

If you add some weed for sale to your truck menu your profits skyrocket!
Think outside the ice cream box!

don't forget the human resources too. unless you are doing it all yourself, normally i guess they hire one person to drive the truck, and another to handle ice cream refilling and serving the ice cream to the customers.

but i know some places, the person driving earns commission based on how much ice cream they can sell that day.

I dont think these guys make much at all. I cant be sure but cmon, you would have to sell alotta ice cream to CLEAR even $100 day. After gas, van, freezers, and ice cream stock I cant imagine there is too much left on a $1.50 sale. But damn if you wanna make 30k a year and work for yourself, I guess its not too bad.

I could be way off on this but I am seeing WAY fewer Ice cream trucks than I saw 10+ years ago, so I assume its not staying very profitable. Oh and I live in a place that is warm almost all year long.

Duncan Banatyne who is now a multi millionaire with many businesses started of as an ice cream man and was making so much he expanded his business. Also depending where you live you dont have to just sale ice cream from your van.

Screw the truck/van....get a scooter. Guy in my area has this scooter/moped setup towing an ice cream cart from it, has a small generator powering the freezer on it. I've talked to him out of curiosity...gets around 70 miles to the gallon with it...he just can't get over 25mph. Works great for the tourist area I live in...especially since its rare to be able to go faster than 25mph during the summer anyways.

I see guys selling smokies downtown at lunch hour or after the bar out of little carts and even in front of our Canadian Tire and Future Shop stores and they seem to do good business. Probably only a few hours a day of work.

You gotta sell a lot of cream to make a good living. Would suggest you just hit up vacation spots in the summer.

I used to do it. Used to make over $7k profit per week. Had a huge van and sold snow cones, hard ice cream cones, smoothies. I'm talking a big van with music on the road, the soon to be ex-wife and I. Then the gas prices started to hike and we just got tired of the whole thing.

Regarding selling popsicles and smaller ice items, you don't need a generator. Plugin the freezers overnight and you can sell many hours without a generator. Obviously get things in/out fast and don't leave it open. I used to do this too but upgraded to selling bigger, more profitable items.

if you can get a van for cheap and have some money to invest just for start you could make sothing like 30-100 a day depending how much hours you spend.

I knew a guy who used to employ 4 guys working corners of downtown Nashville selling only bottled water for $2 a pop. Guy would make daily $1,500 profit after he paid the guys and for the water. All he needed was approval by the city.

I saw the same thing in Vegas recently. In the posh hotels a bottled water is $4 US so some guys brought in some cheap cases of it and sold it on the street for like 1$.

Frankly, I would never pay for bottled water since its been found to be identical to your tap water without the plastic empties problem.

lol reminds me of the old days of bringing money to the park and waiting for the ice cream man on a really hot summer day...i can see how you can make boatloads of money, but like the most successful things in life, you have to target correctly and in large volume

We have an ice cream truck (not mine) that droves by once in a while in the summer in my area. I never see any kids darting to the truck for ice cream when the annoying music starts playing though and it gets really annoying after 5 mins of repeating the music over and over again.

In London its safer to sell crack than icecream.

Icecream vans are very lucrative so there is always turf war over areas.

Cool story bro, $3000 a day? Get real, assuming the average ice cream costs $1,50 that would mean he has to sell 1500 a day.

That's feasible (not pocket change) to make in large cities driving all day in the summer time. Just in one block you can easily make $20-$50 depending how long you stay sit or how fast you drive.

Not exactly ice cream, but I worked a frozen lemonaid stand at the water park I worked at for a couple days. We averaged around $800 per day and had one $1200 day. Most of it would be profit too since its nothing but syrup and ice. So if your cost is low and your volume is high, you could probably do pretty well.

One of my exgirlfriend's used to drive an ice cream truck every summer. She didn't make much money, and one day during a storm the truck (and her) took a hit from a lightning bolt while she was driving it. Knocked her right out of the truck.

When she called the guy who owned the ice cream truck his first question was "Is the truck okay?" Good times....

Yeah good idea go Cheech and Chong style. Although it would look suspicious if you are doing it in -5 weather. The thing is though once people see you making a killing they will over saturate it.

My city averages $100-$130 per day for ice cream men sales profit, but you can only sell for like 3 months a year tops.

instead of selling the ice cream yourself, just hire someone to do it and pay them on commissions. you'd then have a 100% autopilot income stream that you could easily scale up by buying more ice cream trucks, and then you'll have a whole fleet pulling in $$$$ every day while you just relax

Wink Re: Ice Cream Men -How Much money do they make?

Listen guys, I live in Australia. When I was 19, over 40 years ago, my first business was selling gelati ice cream down at the local beach. There were about 5 other guys in our group, (they're all rich specialist doctors now - very good ones at that, they had to cut their teeth on something), anyway, I digress.

All you needed was a hawker's licence, and some set-up to sell your gelati from. My dad (who's now 95, and still sharp as a wit), was very inventive. He made me a metal sheet refridgerator box with straw lining that fitted into the boot of my Mom's car. I'd go down at about 6.00am about 6 days a week in the summer months, picfkup some dry ice, and the gelati icecream, go to the beach, and setup shop, with a large beach umbrella attached to the car boot, and work my guts out.

It wasn't bad pay, actually it was bloody good pay for a 19 year old entrepreneur. In today's terms, my profit would be about $60 to $70 per hour.

Would I recommend it? Well you'd need special licenses today, and the health rules are far stricter. But if you're only 19, can work hard and smart, and you want to meet plenty of sexy chicks, Lol.., it may be your thing.

    Cheers,

    Randy

Around here they make very little. It's finally warmed up, the other day one truck came by blaring the music but they seldom drive in to my apartment complex.

When they do, I'm sometimes the only one who buys anything.

The key to making money in the ice cream van trade is to target an area which has very few local amenities. If there are no local shops or supermarkets then people will spend money at an ice cream van.

Google "Glasgow ice cream van wars". This was a long running thing in Scotland where town planners made an arse of the design of new areas in Glasgow back in the 80's/90's and built huge housing schemes in the middle of nowhere with no shops or amenities nearby. The ice cream vans made fortunes and it all decended in to violent turf wars between the drivers and the gangsters behind them.

I bring my kids INSIDE when he comes to our street lol....Besides you can buy BULK at our local GFS for 1/10th the cost of his for the same shit Go to the source...
    @hawke -
Sounds like your describing me. (Not about the pedo thing, yuck! ), but about being all shaggy and driving an old truck. LOL

I'll tell you what. The guy looks like that because he's got his own business and he can grow his hair and beard long and look like a hippie and still make plenty of money.

Where I drive there's about 7 or 8 other ice cream trucks driving around in the same area. I look like some kind of old hippie, actually even worse I look like an old biker. A couple of the other drivers are Indian. A couple are Mexican. And the rest are part time people that get hired to drive the trucks for a while and then move on.

If you were to judge me by my looks, you might make the same judgement you're making about the guy you described. In my case you would be making a really big mistake. Not only do I not have any weird interest in kids, but I make an extra effort to watch for them running across the street without looking and I'll yell for them to stop when that happens. Most kids don't have a clue about counting money, when a kid throws a handfull of change on my counter I'll take a minute to count it and give the kid his proper change. I'm told all the time by parents that many drivers will just keep a $5 even if the kid only ordered a couple dollars in ice cream. The parents appreciate not having to worry about that with me, in fact when the parents do come out most of the time they'll give me a tip as well. Most of the parents and kids wave to me as I'm driving down the road, even on days they aren't stopping me.

The Ice Cream Man is part of most kids childhood memories. I go out of my way to make sure that kids and parents alike are happy with my service. I approach everything I do with a high level of integrity, and the ice cream business is no different for me.

I'd say the next time that guy drives through your area, go check him out. Maybe he's not the greatest looking guy, but maybe he's not that bad either. As far as you know he could even be the most trustworthy ice cream truck driver in your area. You'll never know for sure by just judging his appearance.

    @OP -
To answer your question. It can be lucrative, but you're not going to get rich. Typically in my area you can make about $25-$30 profit per hour. Just like anything else you do, it's a matter of making the money and then managing it correctly to get ahead.

I started driving an Ice Cream Truck because I lost everything I had when the mortage industry went bust. I had just taken some big mortgages on some properties to fund the purchase of more real estate. It was a sound plan, but the timing turned out to be terrible. I was at such a spot in the deal that when the banks went under it destroyed me financially. One of my rentals was sold on a shortsale to a guy that owns a minimarket. He told me he had made his money to buy the market by driving an Ice Cream Truck. He knew the problems I was going through and offered me a deal on his truck and I've been doing it for about 6 months.

Cost to set up a truck with freezers and everything is around $4000 if you get a used truck. Commercial insurance is about $250/month, gas is only about $5-$10 a day, the ice cream cost about 30-35%, maintenance costs are minimal. License & inspection fees are about $250/year.

During the week I only work about 3-4 hours a day and after expenses I make a profit around $80-$100. On the weekends I work around 5-6 hours a day and make a profit around $160-$180. You make less money during the winter for sure, but people still buy even on cold rainy days. I could make a lot more if I would work a few more hours a day, but I'm working on a lot of things online which will make a lot more money in the long run. The ice cream truck is just something to get me by while I work on building my online business.

I've managed companies before, I've had technical jobs before, I've had construction jobs, and many other types of employment. What I can tell you about the owning an Ice Cream Truck is that it's about the most stress free job I've ever had. If I would have found this business 4 years ago, I would have been able to weather the storm when my realestate investments went bust.

Anyone that wants to start a business that has a very fast return on investment, would do good to take a look at this business. If you know how to run a business, it can even be scaled up over time. Purchase more trucks, hire drivers, set up you own commissary to stock all the trucks, etc. and you could easily exceed $100k/year.

I semi retired at 45yo and was doing quite well, before the economy took a dive. I think to make the money I need to get back the lifestyle I was used to, I have a better chance using my knowledge and skills with computers and the internet. I'm more interested in using the computer to make money long term, but the ice cream business can be a quick way to keep an income without having to get a standard job. It can even be lucrative for anyone that knows how to run a business, and wants to make a career of it.

I'm even planning to make a website to try increasing my business. Many of the parents on my route have already told me they make the kids wait for my truck. Even though I'm not necessarily the cheapest, they think I'm the best. Like I said there are about 7 or 8 other trucks that drive on my same route. I think it's safe to assume none of them know what I do about utilizing the internet. I plan to set up a site which will be interesting to the kids, include some flash games or whatever, and include a mission statement and about us page to let the parents know some of the things I mentioned about integrity and trust. Then hire one of my friends kids that I trust to canvas the areas I drive putting up door hangers that include our website. Also give out cards to the kids that show the website and tells them there are games on there. If I do it right then hopefully I'll become the prefered truck for most of my route customers. If I could eliminate some of the competition I could double what I'm making now, without increasing the hours.
