Default Is WordTracker reliable?

I've used the SEO Book Keyword Suggestion Tool and the Free Keyword Suggestion Tool on the WordTracker site, but a lot of times, the numbers they report don't agree with what Google has.

I would see like 2,000 searches in WordTracker and then go over to Google traffic estimator and see 'not enough data to give estimates'

So what's going on? I'm inclined to believe that Google is correct and WordTracker is wrong, but why is it wrong? How can it be a popular tool if it's wrong so often? Is there any other service that I can use to cross check the numbers for confirmation?

Thanks.

I have to agree with your findings. Sometimes I think I've found a spectacularly good keyword then I double-check it on google and there's no data for it.

Okay, here's the deal with that...Google only goes by their own internal analytics. Outside trackers like seo tool and wordtracker only sort by the traffic of their users...not the overall search engine results like people think. That's why there is a difference.

Use wordtracker and seo tool are basic at best...not a tell-all/be-all, written in stone counter.

The best thing you can do is use google's internal adwords keyword tool...It gives all of the best stats and requirements for google because that is their tool...it's patched into their algorythms.

Here's the link: https://adwords.google.com/select/KeywordToolExternal

thanks, too bad the google tool doesn't give you numbers though. i guess the only way to know for sure is to test each keyword with an adwords campaign (which can be expensive)

A free way is to spy on your competitor... if their ad is online for at least a whole week straight, then it is probably making money for the owner.

i can see how that would indicate that they're not losing money but not sure if it indicates that they're getting any traffic or clicks...

Then you need to test.

If it is getting no traffic/clicks you only lose a few seconds of your time setting up the campaign.

The reason you're getting different results is because Wordtracker doesnt get it's source of information from Google. Wordtracker gets it's data from dogpile.com, infomedia, and a list of other search engines.

Keyworddiscovery.com utilizes Google as one of their search engines they receive search data from.

No way, man...the google tool will give the you full spread of predictions/estimations based on the current information from the last crawl through.

Read up and learn how to use the tool properly with the ' lesson catalog '...

hxxp://www.google.com/adwords/learningcenter/text/26014.html

Read that and you will learn how to set the different features in the keyword tool to really get what you need on the information.

I use that tool daily. Can't give you examples because I'd reveal my niches...don't want to do that, of course...heh.

thanks for the keywordiscovery, but i can't afford the $50 a month right now.

i know that wordtracker doesn't use google, but it would ideally at least be a useful proxy for the general amount of search traffic for a certain term. it's implausible that search engines with 1% market share can have 2,000 searches for a term and google with 60% market share has not enough for them to bother counting.

Besides, if stats are all you want on the keywords, take the time to look up your competition for the first 3 slots on google under your keywords. Do the leg work once and you'll never have to do it again.

Check those sites under view source and then compare their live stats and true numbers on spyfu.com..you simply type in the keyword and/or the url and it will open all of the stats currently for you on that given site.

Hope that helps.

yeah, i use it too. i see how you can extrapolate the amount of searches based on the estimated clicks. it works well when they have data for a term. but sometimes they don't have data. i can't tell what their cut-off is, what number of searches they need to pass the 'not enough data' threshold.
