Default Make Money in 'Online Archiving' for Hospitals & Big Companies?

I was talking in a networking group today and someone mentioned a new small business niche that is popping up all over the place that goes something like this...

Buy a server, create a website..call it something like 'secure online archiving..or whatever..'...then sell large companies on the fact that they need to have an offsite backup of all their data incase they have a large disaster or fire and everything gets destroyed in their building and their severs get wiped off the face of the earth.

Explain that all their data will be backed up on your secure sever which is protected in a hidden bat cave guarded by 75 midgets who are kung fu masters...well not really but you know what I mean. Make it sound secure.

Anyone heard about this? Potential to get some big companies as clients?

    What do you think?

EDIT: Maybe this should be in Offline...mods can you move?

Buy a server...sell offsite backup services? Seriously? I think you're in over your head son Do you realize how much storage infrastructure you'll need in order to support a hospital's data and other "big companies". You're gonna need more than 'a server'. Your best bet is get some investors for your project. Then do your due diligence in finding the right datacenter with proper certifications, disaster proof, and can provide 24x7 and 3 or more 9's of uptime. And don't think potential clients won't demand to tour your 'data storage' facilities before they just hand you their data. You will be storing confidential information so you better know how to secure it like a virtual Fort Knox. They WILL audit you first, just so you know.

uhh dont mess with anything that falls under HIPPA , SOX , or SEC compliance which is where most data retention rules come from. Your not just taking some small business owners money..... that only a small portion.... government bodies AUDIT you.. not a good thing if your not actually doing what you say you do.

also cost is prohibitive to get in. I set up an infrastructure for a hospital and their design rule of thumb with was i 1 PETABYTE per every two floors/per department subdivision/wing.. do the math on a large scale hospital. SANs are not cheap...

I sell this kinda stuff as my day job. It's real good money, but it's not that simple. First you need to get a business to trust that you can even back up their data.

The best way to get started is to sell hardware and software to the business for their on site backups. Hint E-discovery.

If you target large companies, you'll need some serious IT and compliance infrastructure. Rather than target large companies, I think you would be better off targeting small businesses. You'll have to overcome competition from services like Carbonite.

I think it could be a good niche income stream, but it won't be without a significant amount of legwork. You'll also have to create a web-based user interface and/or a client to install on the users machine. That could be outsourced fairly easily though.

You could hit up a few local businesses, offer your service for free for 6 months in exchange for good references. You might even set up a revenue sharing (think clickbank) program where you pay them a percentage of the whatever fees their referrals pay.

about the only thing i can think of that "might" be do-able as a cheap startup would be on-site document shredding & long-term document storage (aka warehousing).
