That was a long time coming thats for sure. Hopefully it'll clean this place up a little bit with all that inflated post count going on. There's alot of stuff being posted 5 - 20 times the same thing and has been counting just the same. If anything, maybe it would be nice for the original poster or sharer of download to have post credit and everything after that dismissed, maybe mod original post in download section, like a weekly review or something of original shares in the download section. Anyway, great idea. Hope it weeds out the jokers.

Well, the thanks button works wonders for showing recognition.

You had a post deleted? I take it that it was a thanks type post for a DL from your post.
How many people consider the database size when making posts that are easily taken care of via the thanks button. The space and resources needed for backups and searching to display the posts should be considered when making a post. Unless you are hosting the site, then have at wasting disk space, RAM resources, CPU resources, site speed for thousands of users, and bandwidth.

Common courtesy to Dave would cut down on useless posts if people would think about it.

I only have one thing to say about this....

On the warez forum where I am a moderator, if you even THINK the term "post count" it gets reset to zero, if you're lucky, and usually to a large negative number, especially if you complain about it.
You want to get to be able to make requests? 50 quality posts is easy. You want Jr. VIP status? Again, quality posts, being courteous and helpful and maybe even an upload or two and it will happen. You want it on the hurry up? Donate the $97 with 100 posts and it's yours.

I'd like to find a way for the thread starter to get credited for his share, and for all other replies after that to not count, but afaik that's not possible. So until we find that mod, this is just the way it's going to have to be. Even if people share less, it's no big loss, because the real treasures of this forum are not found in the Downloads section...

There's a kind of circular argument there EC - in that I'm continually seeing the message that the 'real goodies' are when you hit Jr VIP - which you won't get until you have 200 posts. And yet, on the learning curve to get to the sort of level that Jr VIP implies, one of the useful things that people do (and are encouraged to do) is share downloads.

I have no idea of the mechanics of the forum (and have no wish to get into a deep discussion about it) but maybe an alternative would be to count 'thanks' received in that particular area - something like 10 thanks = 1 post. But it's probably overcomplicating life

EC,

I just saw this. I think you had a wonderful idea and you are doing a great job of containing abuses. Not sucking up. That's simply the way I feel.

Thanks for the input, Phil. The whole idea behind this is to make it more of a challenge to get into Jr. VIP. If the "goodies" are truly in Jr. VIP, then it should be difficult to gain access to, yes? Or would you prefer to make it easier for eBay spies and CPA account managers to make it into Jr. VIP? If you think that neither lurk here, well, let's just say I personally know otherwise

Also, one shouldn't base their Jr. VIP entrance on downloads and posts in the lounge, it should come from shared knowledge and valuable contributions. The bottom line is this: if people wouldn't abuse the forum, we wouldn't have to censor it. And since there is no perfect solution, this is the solution we're going with for now.

Maybe moderated posts (at least for newbies) would be the way to go for:

Feedback
BST
Freelance
Downloads & Download Requests

A relative newbie (like myself) might actually have something valid to add (as opposed to request.)

...Just a thought.

In my personal opinion, (it is fine to rant it here now since it won't count to my post count thus not considered spamming right? ) it is not just the downloads that will enable us to increase our post count. Just share a simple tip or two every so often and it will build up. It could be as simple as sharing a money making idea or responding to questions on the other sections of the forum. True it will take slightly longer, but in a way, it could make attaining the JR VIP status all the more sweeter . So well rules are rules, nobody ever likes them. But yet at the same time, Black Hatters always adapt to them ya?

Hmmm was doing a count for this......it really isn't too bad especially if one does not intend to be a donor. Let me explain. If one wants to be a Jr VIP for free, one will have to be on the forum for 90 days. So this mean that one only needs to make an average of 2.22 posts a day! So round it up to three! Hmmm answer 1 x question, give 1 x comment and make 1 x query a day and happy days mate, you will be on your way to being a Jr VIP. Doesn't seem that hard now that I have done some calculations. Though I hope I am not shooting myself in the foot and the mods increase it after reading this.

A couple of you hit the nail on the head. It is the know how that is important.

While getting the programs for free has been nice, on occasion, reading the reviews and spending my money wisely has helped even more. For some Paulo's review thread about Findology, BHC, and TE should be a goldmine of info. For Jeff too, since he wasn't given high marks he can now use that to alter is business model and make a better business.

The modded posts, while serving the purpose, sucked. You could be the first to reply to a post and not have it seen for hours, meanwhile everything you posted was reiterated by vetted members and wasn't really looked at. It felt like one wasn't participating. The admins and mods did look at the posts though, so a person would get noticed.

Oddly, after the post counts were dropped I find myself posting a bit more.
