I created a group on Facebook that got over 1million members in 28 days. I then sold the group on sitepoint for $10,000. I was offered $15,000 but had already signed for 10k My point is, there are plenty of people who would love to have a group with 1,000,000+ members and who will pay big money to take yours. The "message all members" feature goes away at 5,000 members, or else the groups would be worth much more.

Here is my advice to creating 1,000,000+ member facebook groups:

1. Follow pop culture and if a big event happens, create a group around it. Try and be the first to do so and people will join like mad. Example: When Heath Ledger died and "The Dark Knight" came out, someone created a group entitled "Heath Ledger Deserves a Post Humous Academy Award for his Role in the Dark Knight." Not the shortest title but it gained more than 1,000,000 members within the month.

2. Play off of Nastalgia. A group called "If you remember this you grew up in the 90's" has almost 2 million members. It is all about discussing things about the 90's that people loved.

3. Experiments like 6 degrees of separation where the only point of joining the group is to participate in an experiment. These groups ask you to inivite all of your friends and usually go viral. This is the kind of group I sold (now has more than 2million members).

My advice if you are planning on partaking in the Facebook group journey is to create a fake account and get a lot of fake friends. This way you don't have to spam your real friends when inviting them to join your group and they don't get pissed at you. Good luck!

Thanks for the info on if you have more than 5,000 members you can't message all members. Not sure how well "fan pages" works, but would you be able to do the same for them and mass message all of them if you had more than 5,000 members?

edit: Just checked a group that has 393,833 fans and the way they message people is they do an update so it shows up as all the members having an update instead of a message. Guess you could just plug a website in there to make some monie

You can tell if your group is snowballing or going viral if it is still growing exponentially after about 5,000 members. A lot of groups find it difficult to break 2 or 3 thousand members. If it's been a couple weeks and you're still not even over 5k then start over.

Seek ideas that unite people. For example you may start a group called "The Pea Coat Group," and invite everyone on Facebook who wears peacoats to join your group. Have them post pictures of themselves wearing their peacoats. Just an idea.

Wow this is pretty neat, never knew people would actually buy a facebook group. Might have to think of some out side the box groups.

yeh facebook im just getting into. i made couple applications using the free gift creator. one has over 140k monthly users. had message last night by another facebook member offering me 200usd for it lol.. i turned it down of course. but just goes to show that u can indeed make some nice wedge on there

I just joined a group that is called just like that but in italian.. it's called "you grew in the '90 if..." and has more then 195k members.. amazing

edit: i translated the group name into english ofcourse the original is "sei cresciuto negli anni '90 se..."

Im interested in this method. Ive got a myspace group with 15,000 members that makes some money. I need to try out facebook to.

Well i got 5k in about 5 days, so I think hopefully it should grow nicely, if not exponentially. Just wonder whether il be able to sell it when it gets bigger.

Selling seems like the easy part for me. I am having a hard time getting anyone to join. What do you do to promote it.

I just made a group. If a lot of my friends join, I will post a link here you guys to please join. I made it like a chain group so it will be a get your friends to join type of thing. I said that if you know about this group and don't join it then 2009 will be the worst year of your life. It works for chain mail and txt chains

My idea is that you post your affiliate links to the group and get people to sign up under you...just an idea.

In regards to selling, there are a lot of people out there with big money who are willing to buy facebook groups and give it a shot marketing them.

This is very good stuff, I have experimented with the groups before but never quite managed to pull it off, but good advice on the niche here , should work nicely in tandem with DatingGold thanks :P

Who are the people buying these groups, they are surely making more money using these groups than selling. If we know how to utilize the group, we can also make more money with proper idea.

Promoting was easy for me. Just find an issue thats in the news/topical now yet not already saturated with big groups. Next invite all your friends. Then send a message out to the whole group saying youll make people officers if they invite their friends. Its ok making people officers as they have no real power over the group, they can just create videos/items, not delete you as admin or anything. Then keep sending the messages/putting the lists of current officers up on the group page and youll easily make 10k. Then it should go viral if its a catchy enough title

Thats a freaking cool idea....to the guy who was asking what he should promote to his IM group....put up a little blurb on the various affiliate marketing companies who have 2 tier and make money off what they promote.

Or write a review on the latest greatest new program hitting the streets and post it to the group. Use your imagination...you got the members, thats the hard part.

in the past i'd tried to create a snowballing facebook group (prior to my time at BHW) and i'm extremely grateful to you for reminding me of it; i have many more tools with which to create a decent sized group and I'd never thought of just selling it outright; great idea. many thanks.

I'd air on the side of caution.

Always make a new account and get a cheap/free sim for your phone (plenty around).

Verify your account with the sim and throw it.

Use the Facebook bomber software I upped in members downloads and add friends. 50 a day.

THEN make your group.

That way the USER has created a new group called " " message appears

It may or maynot be true but having an email list you can market to consensually has got some value but what is the group about offers would need to target that niche I would think and the resale value would depend on the demographic that group represents
