How to setup a local SMTP server to use it .to be able to handle several hundred thousand emails at a time?

use QK mailer it works, and it is free, but it will expose your ip address.

Problem with that is you will only be using 1 IP address, which will get blacklisted in a hurry. Not to mention if you only have 1 IP address, and you want to use several different from addresses, the from address domains will not match up to that IP address when a reverse dns lookup is performed. Which means your email will not get delivered to most inboxes.

I remember someone from this forum said he got a script that rotates IPs on qmail.

Best thing you can do is to install qmail and create a few SMTPs.

Get a VPS with several IPs, host 2-3 domains there and mail with a software or with email marketer using the SMTPs.

Don't forget to ask the host for rDNS and to define SPF and DKIM on qmail.
