Question Garage sales and thrift store items that sell for big?

I found a Singer 221k sewing machine at a garage sale for $10 that I ended up selling on ebay for $350. I have told people of this and I hear a few stories about people who do this for a living. I heard a story where one guy would hit up used book stores and take all the first editions and make thousands a month.
I have listed the Singer 221k as the 1st item on the list can anyone list more items to look out for that are hot!!! Things I could specifically look for at used stuff stores. It doesn't have to be a huge markup but at least a 5x. Thanks !!!

you just have to get familiar with stuff. have a phone where you can get on ebay and search completed listings while out at sales. i used to go to the auctions and search everything i saw so i knew how much to bid. i would make good money on all kinds of random things.

This is basically what I've been doing for a living for the last twenty years. It's a big world, there's LOTS of stuff...there's plenty to find you just have to get out of the house and do your research.

yea, this works. but you gotta stick to stuff you can sell quick. there are tons of tv programs popping up about various "picker" types so it might get a bit more popular but theres so much junk to sort through out there you can always stay busy.

So nobody on this board besides the last poster has any insight on common products found in thrift stores?

I guess a UK thrift store is what we call a "charity shop". There mostly full of clothes (strangely womens), books & freebie DVDs you find on magazines here. Not much choice these days, they rarely take electrical goods (I guess legal safety issues), there main customers are women. Unless you want something for yourself the prices are not so great as they once was, well not enough to consider reselling the stuff for a decent turn, unless you get lucky (find something with the tags still on etc.).

They seem wise to eBay/Gumtree and the likes now and price accordingly. Either I go to the worse shops or am just really unlucky

The shops are also quite fussy I tried giving 1 a bag of poster prints/paintings once and they refused it...

I go in there myself alot as something to do as my girl loves the things.

What were you expecting? A list of shit to hunt for? It takes years and years of experience to learn what to look for as to what will sell well. If it looks old, looks like someone might collect it, or it has some type of value about 20 years ago.

I'll give you three of my Favorite things to look for that you can commonly find:

    Hulk Smash Hands - http://cgi.ebay.com/Incredible-Hulk-...item3a61437ef7

Turbo Man Action Figure - http://cgi.ebay.com/Turboman-Action-...item3a616a834e

    Crossfire Board Game - http://cgi.ebay.com/VINTAGE-Game-CROSSFIRE-Pinball-Arcade-Style-Shoot-Out-/230563009835?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item35aea0 552b

Thrift stores may not have the greatest stuff...take a look at the furniture. If it looks old it may be worth something to someone, but like someone said earlier...its a skill that takes years to hone. Old board games, Atari, things of that nature. People are always wanting to buy a piece of their childhood and are willing to pay big bucks. Classic train sets are another.

Side story: A friends father and uncle are into buying storage lockers. One day about 10 years ago they purchased one for $250. What was inside you ask? A Shelby Cobra.

Oh...tools. Tools are big time money.

    I did this during university.

Thrift stores are NEVER NEVER worth it.

They take all the "good" stuff to pawnbrokers who give them money for it, rather than have to store it and risk it being stolen.

The real money is in garage sales. You need to pick the right ones, some are full of junk from poor people, the best ones, are rich people who are moving house and just want to get rid of stuff and are too stingey to take it to the dump. You can find classic books, classic toys, classic consoles and games, as well as stamps (if you have a trained eye)

I have tried, or know people who tried other stuff, storage lockers, estate auctions, door knocking old people, and nothing seems to be quite as good as a well picked garage sale.

Oh, make sure you get there early, usually 15 minutes before the advertised start time, because the good stuff goes QUICK.

If you really want to get into this, you should probably check out self storage auctions. There are two new reality shows, one on Spike and one on A&E tv. They highlight the things they find that are valuable. Other places to see stuff that is valuable are the Pawn shows (Pawn Stars is one) and the picker show mentioned above.

Do craigslist arbitrage. You find high demand cell phones people are desperate to sell, you throw them a lowball offer and if they accept, you've got it made. If you havr some money to invest, maybe 500 to 1000, you can profit after ebay fees about 200 a day if you manage to sell 4-5 phones per day.

DrFrank- you're right there don't seem to be many shops like that over here in the UK. There used to be loads, but since Ebay came along, I haven't seen any for years. Charity shops, well the major ones, tend to have people who sift out the more potentially valuable items. Anyone else in the UK know of any good sources?

Hey, always be on the look-out for clothes. Like brand names that are in "new" condition. Abercrombie is always selling. Pick something up for $1 and you can't go wrong. There is DEFINETlY money in it, but you have to pound the pavement for sure.

Any old video game console or video games from the 80's or 90's, you might find a rare game. Old paintings, Old Furniture, look for designer name or anything that allows you to quickly look at the selling price online.
