Default Getting mobile phones free from contract?

I was wondering how to get mobile phones free without contract?
For instance in UK you have major suppliers sending phones however you have to sig up on one ear contracts at £30 month but the handset is free. So as I want a new phone come out instead of buying one unlocked I thought to get the phone somehow free then go get it unlocked and also avoiding the contract however bit baffled how to go about it?
VCC's probably come into play here. Any advice tactics on this please?

Uh, what? The phone is "subsidized" by the contract. If you want a 'free' phone go with some prepaid service where you pay like 30$ for the phone and it comes with minutes.

Yeah I bought an at&t refurb prepaid phone that would normally retail for over a hundred if it wasn't a refurb but I only paid $35. It came with A $25 prepaid card along with an extra $10 in minutes if you activated it within a week, so it was really free.

I looked into seeing if I could order a bunch and resell them, but I think at&t limits it to only a few per household.

The refurb looked like a brand new phone, by the way.

I assume you've purchased a new phone with contract, right? If you have, you would know they take down a lot of information. They run a credit check, if your credit is too poor they will require a deposit. This deposit is usually 400$ or so. If you terminate the contract they will usually take 175-275$ as an early termination fee. Either way, they get their cash for that new phone.

well maybe it works differently in britland. in the us and a , you fill out an application with some personal details. they use your SS# to check your credit. they will also use that ss# to enforce the contract should you default on the payments..
