'...Your question CyberDilemma is directed to Jasong, so forgive me if I jump in as well.
It sounds to me like Jasong knows what he's talking about so it will be interesting to see his answer but I can tell a knock-off miles away, just like I can tell a Ladyboy without having to get up really close...lol (You'd be surprised how many tourists, here on a shag-fest, sleep with a bloke and don't realise it)...But I digress.
There are subtle signs and you need to learn them. Sadly, there is no tutorial, you get the skill from experience. But, with respect, you are falling into the same trap as everyone in the West.
If it looks like a Lacoste shirt - has been made to the same standard with fabric off the same roll, with all the labels, buttons, logo etc., and has been made in the same workshop and washes and wears the same and comes to you with a swing ticket, cellophane and tissue wrapping, blah-blah,... what makes a knock-off so different to a genuine other than the price?
Now we're not talking Rolex watches here or the difference between genuine diamonds and Cubic Zirconia. (Incidentally don't ever settle for less than D-flawless if purchasing a diamond)...But I digress again, I'm just trying to demonstrate that some of us know what we're talking about...lol-again.
We are so conned by clever marketing, Politicians and hypnotic propoganda in the West that we take it all in, and so did I. It's only now, living in Asia where I can eat out with alcohol in a nice restaurant for a dollar or two that I cannot believe I have paid $350.00 in the past for Sushi in Las Vegas, for example. (Yes, I'm off the beaten track again, sorry!).
Anyway, How do YOU know that the Ralph Lauren you just spent your weeks salary on is genuine? Not because it came from some fancy shop, that's for sure. If only this wasn't the Internet, I could show you two Versace shirts or Jeans - one genuine and one knock-off and I KNOW you couldn't tell the difference, they are THAT good.
Sorry to burst your bubble but I still dress the same as ever, live the same life-style and have sh*tloads more cash because I'm paying $6.00 for shirt and you're paying $95.00, and if I'm wearing copies and I don't realise it, then there's no way you're going to know, so I really don't give a damn!

PS To hopefully prove a point - You won't find Thais wearing fancy label clothes. As we say in the U.K. They don't get all 'logo-ed up' because they know what a con it is. Embroider a crocodile on a T-shirt, call it Lacoste and charge an extra $50.00? I don't think so!
