Default The 3G Apple iPhone...

Does anybody know the unlocked story behind this phone?

Certain people say it cannot be unlocked, but I have seen newspaper articles saying that there are commitment-less (ie. No AT&T contract bs) phones that will be available, but for $600 - 700 a unit. (I have seen certain suppliers advertising pre-orders for this amount, so I tend to believe that this is true).

Anybody know of any further information?

I've seen on the ziphone unlocker site that they are already prepared to unlock the 3g - whether its true or not who knows.
But this release is not only in the US - but up here in Canada plus other countries as well - so no way can it be "unlockable"

I think the store activation will hold it up for a bit but then someone will come up with a workaround

It certainly CAN be unlocked. If non Apple, non AT&T resellers are claiming that they are selling them on release day, then they've already bypassed the in store activation BS.

I'm wondering if I should pay people to stand in line for me... or whether they really are going to uphold the in store activation shite.

Anyone know for sure?

Well guys to update you, I went and got mine this morning. Apparently, AT&T was having problems with the in-store activation (I think it was taking too long) so they sent everyone out the door with their 3G iPhone still in the shrink wrap. You still had to sign a contract but the phones haven't been activated yet.

These WILL be on eBay!

%^$*in' AT&T. I despise them so much. I wanted the phone, but I wasn't going to re-up my contract to get one. I'll just buy a old one and jailbreak it.

http://www.vnunet.com/vnunet/news/22...ne-3g-unlocked reports that a group have unlocked the new 3G iphone and over here is AUS you can pay to have it unlocked cost about $85

http://www.gizmodo.com.au/2008/07/ip...king_on_3.html most people are buying up phones getting them unlocked and then selling them on ebay.

From what I have heard is that wholesale and business customers will be the last to get the Iphones, Apple is more consumer about keeping the consumer market happy than wholesale and business. We have 35 3G iphone's on back order and have been told we have to wait till next month to get them.

Most stores around here where only given 100 and they sold out on day one, The apple store is now holding on to the main bulk of them and making a killing signing up people on phone deals as they can sign up people on any network :-) or the network that pays them the most commission.

I have not looked in a while but are there a lot of HSDPA networks in AUS, or anywhere outside the US? I really want to know how they are getting around the APN.... I thought it was programmed into the phone, well I guess they can change that if they want to and set a new one to work on other networks.

But in the end why get an iPhone when you can have a real phone.....a Blackberry! AFAIK the iPhone still has no Enterprise solution do they? Blackberrys can hook into my Exchange/BES and it allows me to manage them remotely, I don’t think the iPhone can really compete in a business environment.
