Default help with DNS records plz

I set up my DNS record in directregister.com to point to my website

changed the A record * to my new IP
added the A record www to my new IP

however, if I try to go to my domain and don't put in the www, I get an error.....

    The page isn't redirecting properly
Firefox has detected that the server is redirecting the request for this address in a way that will never complete.
if I put the www, it then goes to my site.

I have seen this happen vice versa, but never this way.
when I requested directregister to unlock the ability to allow DNS records change,
they replied that they do not help with this and I am on my own.

any ideas why this is happening?

    edit, n/m
apparently the A record wasn't live yet, its working now, with and without the www.

    A record * means wildcard as in a.example.com, b.example.com, c.example.com, etc.

If you want example.com to resolve, add <blank> in A <IP>

www should be an A record, not a CNAME.
