Re: Craigslist phone verification system
Doesn't sound like there is a way out of it.
For those who don't know, Craigs*list has implemented a phone verification system in certain categories to reduce SPAM content. When you attempt to make a post, it asks for you to verify yourself by typing in a viable phone number. It automatically calls it and repeats a verification code which you must then enter for your post to go live. If your post gets flagged, the phone number you verified with will be blacklisted.
Maybe pre-paid cellphones would work? That'd get expensive though.

Re: Craigslist phone verification system
buy a monthly subscription to a disposable phone numbers service, such as vumber.com and tossabledigits.com
depending on what plan you get they charge around $0.20-$0.99 for a additional number but it's free if you delete the 1st number they issued you and get a new number

Re: Craigslist phone verification system
They've just started doing this in the computer services section too. I'm seriously freaking out now because I make the majority of my income off that section. I'm a freelance designer.
I don't know how I'm going to pay my bills if I can't find a way around this. Anyone have a suggestion? Please?

Re: Craigslist phone verification system
Grand Central isn't accepting any new sign ups. I tried.
Vumber is $5 per month which would be fine, but they only let you change your number 3 times, and after that you have to pay 1.99 for each change.
Does anyone know of a service that gives free disposable numbers that forward to your regular phone?
Privatephone is down. So is Craigsnumber, and numbr.com
I just need to get into the Computer Services section...they have it locked down like it's ES.

Matchdigits is also down.
Jangl works but they make the caller jump through hoops to get connected the first time and CL won't do that.
I'm gaining wrinkles by the minutes here...

Question, will using a free number that goes straight to voicemail work? In other words, will CL leave a message that you can retrieve or must you physically answer the call?

have you looked into tossabledigits.com?
I'm not sure if they charge to change your number after a set number of times but since they are a competitor of vumber I think they would charge.

Re: Craigslist phone verification system
I wrote this last month
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I am unable to get a Telephone Account Verification to get authorized on craigslist
I have tried tollfreeforwarding.com and tossabledigits.com
And used numbers like 213-233-9423 and 785-783-4273 but they get rejected by the craigslist system (not sure why – maybe they only except 9 digit codes) ---does anyone know of a service that works ? (I live in Australia so I can’t use a real USA phone

Can't use voip numbers. And least from what I already know but I have not spent a lot of time digging. I was told this by someone that we wanted me to come up with a solution. And my assumption is probably accurate that CL is looking at the national database that distinguishes which numbers are voip and which arn't.
TO ALL:
I have to chime in here as somewhat of a self proclaimed expert on this subject. I am certified ULEC providing telecom solutions. And we have a one-number follow me service such as Grand Central.
I know about this and was asked by someone else's popular service the aids in multiple CL listings to provide a service for this very reason. - But at the time ...only a few weeks ago this was for a specific adult section only. Seems they are broadening this now.
Here's my best advice as I won't be providing this just yet. I have to work out some logistics. It can easily done (from our service). It won't be free - and I have to consider the consequences of whoever else might get that phone number after, say, YOU.
This wasn't that much of issue when there was only the adult section where this existed - because the chances were very low that next person to have that number may be tryong to post on CL ..in that specific section.
None the less.... my advice:
Our service differs cause its PSTN (Public Switched Telephone Network) ...not VoIP.
You best bet is someone to try Vumber and report back. I their technology is a bit tricky (not to you ... from my standpoint) , in the way that they are PSTN but also I believe may deliver voip.
In any event for $4.99 - one of you would be able to test and tell us perhaps.
I do they that are PSTN. - which give you the best possibility of having success.
Vonage won't work ... tossable ...won't and all the rest that are VoIP won't
Good luck - report back.

Re: Craigslist phone verification system
The problem with Vumber is that they charge you $2 for each number change after the first three. That could really add up if you get flagged.
If it was a flat rate of $5 per month with unlimited numbers I'd be all over it.

Someone has figured it out, they are just not sharing. Or wanting to sell the secret like that guy linked to up-thread.
If somehow I manage to crack this I will spill it here for everyone. I cannot imagine how many people are going to really be hurting because of this change.

Orangecat, if you find yourself in need of some freelance work, you can always check out elance, getafreelancer, and/or odesk, and don't forget that you can also sell your services to people in web related forums that you regularly visit,..
so stop freaking out and just chill, you still have options

Unfortunately they have to make money money somewhere...
especially for a superior service. Not that GC isn't great - but it has it's blips...
The PSTN provides solid clear sound quality. Why the hell am I plugging my competitors???...LOL
The price is actually very cheap - I was going to charge around $10-$12 a month for ours. We'll see what happens..
By the way - the way that Vumber ..and our differs then GC is simple.
The problem for a technical standpoint for telecom services in a relation to a service like this - is outbound calling. Which is included at that price. This may not seem amazing to you guys... BUT IT IS!!
In a top level telecom business you can have unlimited inbound at no expense. It's the call termination on outbound calls that deplete your revenues. Hence the reason why voip is blowing up and changing the landscape of telecom.
If the call is routed over web - it essentially never leaves that companies network. By using VoIP you are bypassing the phone companies and its charges.
Viva La Internet.
Won't be long before the FCC tries to regulate this as the greedy corporate F'ers are loosing money on something they profited by billions and billions of dollars for years.
I like the fact the multi-billlion dollar wireless networks that have raped consumers for so long will become nothing but hollow pipe's in which better (newer) technology's can operate over with more saving for consumers.
If you want to look into that more - Read how T-Mobile tried to block TruPhone
This is a great article:

Re: Craigslist phone verification system
As mentioned above, all the standard DIDs do not work. I have tried at least three, free and paid and they don't work. Has anyone tried the vnumber yet? Also, the phone verification, it is only a once off process for your account? Meaning, you just put in your number, get verified once and then you can post away, next time you post an ad you don't need to verify again do you?
That vumber just looks like another DID provider...... unless I missed something. Very possible since I just woke up

Cpugeek, same problem for me. Just comes up with
Your phone number could not be verified.
Please start over with another number
That's what I got with all the other DID providers. I now see all the services section needs phone number verification.

Re: Craigslist phone verification system
Just got this when trying to use tossable digits after some tweaking. I think it is pretty obvious they are blocking "most" DID/voip. Need to find the ones they arent blocking.
We were unable to verify the phone number you supplied. Prepaid cell phones, temporary / forwarding numbers, and most voice-over-IP services cannot be verified.

Re: Craigslist phone verification system
Have you guys checked into Virgin prepaids? I bought a phone a coupla years back because I was relocating/job hunting. I ended up changing numbers 6 times in a 3week period (6 different states-- it was a MESS!) and they didn't charge me a dime. I have changed it twice in the past 18mos (last was about a year ago and again I've never been charged) and I keep it because w/Sugamama I haven't had to add any money to the account (top up) in two years. virginmobileusa.com I use it for brring now.

Re: Craigslist phone verification system
Been browsing getafreelancer and noticed that several folks are posting projects for phone verified CL accounts, and people are bidding on them saying they can do it. One guy want 500 accounts.
What the heck are they doing that I cannot figure out? Grrrr. I'll be racking my brain on this for a while.
The only thing I've come up with so far is to take your blackberry/iphone/whatever on the road and hit up the pay phones. But what a hassle that would be and you'd eventually run out of phones.
Someone suggested buying a bunch of sim cards for the cell but that would be pretty expensive as well. Unless you can find a cheap supplier and so far I haven't hit pay dirt on that.

Well said ...
too funny.
What I am trying to explain to you guys is simply this.
There is a Database for teleco's
North American Local Exchange NPA NXX Database
My suspicion and experience would lead me to easily believe that they are looking at this DB. This would be the easiest and most cost effective to institute exactly what they are doing.
The DB provides which NXX records are assigned to which telco's and shitload of other info.
They can simply filter out blocks of NXX records based on the Telco.
So, you best solution is a PSTN provider of such a service. But, I am telling you that probably wouldn't last to long when they see multiple people using that provider and realize what is going on and then just block them as well.
For all other intents and purposes everything would see legit and therefore should not be flagged fro CL or others using this type of service.

Hahaha....
Looks like we are back to the VCC thread now ..
Best to use a Virtual CC for this. But if you can find a palce that offers them near you ...then that suxx.
If you have local check cashing stores try those locations. Usually a "known" one that has a chain. Not "Ron's Check-Cashing Pawn Shop-N-Liquor Store"
You can by them at Point of Sale with absolutely 0 info. Not a prepaid CC (those can be refilled but require your info at POS. You want a Visa Gift Card. You fund with cash and go - no info required.
People will also tell you that you can go online to simon*com // the only potential flaw I see there is the fact that with that service you need to use a CC to order! LOL ..
Which would ultimately be a paper trail. For this purpose however - that doesn't matter. Nobody is going to care that much. Give'em a try ....you should have a Virtual CC for online endeavors anyway.
Because I said so.
