I noticed my site was falling further in rankings and used a website checkup tool yesterday. It showed that I had over 40,000 pages indexed but I only have several hundred pages on my site. So I did a google search for indexed pages of my site and Google returned 73,000 indexed pages. I discovered that a script that I had put on my site called HD YouTube NicheBuilder by HighDesert Software was causing the problem. The script allows visitors to watch YouTube videos without leaving the site. My site is an ecommerce site selling custom wigs and there are hundreds of related tutorials on Youtube on how to install, style and remove the wigs. So I thought adding this script to my site would be a useful resource for my customers. So what I discovered is this script has some how generated thousands of pages each containing a YouTube video totally unrelated to my site/product/keywords. Many of the pages are in a foreign language. And Google has indexed all of these pages diluting my relevance for the keywords I am trying to rank for.
I am perplexed as to how these pages were generated because they do not show up in my website and sitemap generatating tools did not discover them. The urls are formated as: mysitename/lacewigtutorials/tag/randomnamehere
I don't understand how all of these pages could be created and the pages not show up in my website??? Where were they hiding at? And why were they not detected by the sitemap generating tools that crawl your site for pages?
Upon discovery of this problem I immediately deleted the entire directory "lacewigtutorials" but now I fear that I will suffer even further backlash because it will probably take Google a while to de-index the pages and in the meant time, even though the pages were not relevent to my keywords, I've got thousands of indexed pages that do not exist!!
