If one of my link partners is cheating me by hiding the nofollow in the htaccess I can check the headers using a HTTP header checker and it will show me that they are indeed using the HTACCESS to hide the nofollow.

BUT:

If the so called link partner first targets the googlebot and only serves the nofollow to the googlebot where does that leave me in identifying the cheat?

If I check the cached page in google ... using the firefox CSS nofollow hack, will it show me that the link is nofollow even if it does not say so in the sourcecode of the page?

change your user agent in firefox (not sure if you need a plugin or not for this) to the same as googlebot, then view the page again. it'll show up in the source then

does anyone know how i block opera and safari browsers from visiting my site? what would that look like in htaccess?

Good point Steb, but if they are as good as that, then they will surely identify the CORRECT googlebot. Not just my firefox "googlebot" plugin.

Good point though but the question of detectable or not remains if they can identify the correct googlebot.

true. its possible they may be doing both IP and user agent detection for GBot..didnt think of that!

altho your cached page suggestion seems to be a winner. If the site serves up a different page to google only, then it'll be cached as the different page.
