Warning Twitter User's!! (this has to do with cloacking)
I just wanted to warn you guys, that if you are getting you accounts banned
and are using bit.ly STOP IT!
Why?
Because bit.ly is owned by twitter!
Just thought I would toss out the warning...
Twitter is really hammering down on this...
In short, if you DO plan on using bit.ly in the future...
Do NOT spam your links! TWITTER IS WATCHING YOU!
Cheers

Any link or proof where we can see that Twitter owns bit.ly? Google does not turn up anything as such.

News to me, but it makes sense.
Doesn't effect my Twitter stuff though.
I actually like bit.ly a lot.

Re: Warning Twitter User's!! (this has to do with cloacking)
Good warning. But is there any way we can be sure that twitter really owns bit.ly? You know just to verify. It is good you brought this up though. I appreciate this.

When you post long links in twitter don't they get turned into bit.ly links automatically?

Yeah thats what it used to be. If your post was too long and you had links in it, it would TinyURL it. Not sure when they acquired Bit.ly (If they even have), but it wouldnt make sense to use a competitior...

Thats the thing, if you actually use bit.ly
you really, and I mean really like it. A lot.
^I think its the real time tracking that does it for me.....

Re: Warning Twitter User's!! (this has to do with cloacking)
Most of the clicks from twitter are bot clicks, maybe the 90%. I have tested this a lot of times, so if you see 25 clicks on your link, maybe the 3 or 4 are from humans. Even the cligs which has real time statistics from humans and bots isnt accurrate

there are other url shortener services with real time tracking capabilities, e.g. cli.gs (my personal fav), budurl
and with cli.gs u can customize your url (and so much more), if i'm not wrong u can't do it anymore with bit.ly for a while (i don't find the function now but i'm sure bit.ly provided this kind of function in the past, i used it)

Re: Warning Twitter User's!! (this has to do with cloacking)
since bit.ly is (or was) THE thing used by twitter itself to shorten your urls, twitter would definitely keep an eye on bit.ly links if too many seemed to spammy. Can't say twit owns them but they definitely partner with them for url shortening.

twitter clients like TweetDeck will allow you to choose your preferred url shortening services.
