Default I ALWAYS keep it moving! What "traveling marketers plan" do. Get paid from anywhere

I am young. Not young like 15 but young enough to know that I don't have any "Real" responsibly. Paid car, rent month to month, no kids, self employed, graduated college.

    Question

AS AN INTERNET MARKETER what would you "pack" in order to make money while moving?

    1. ______________
    2. ______________
    3. ______________
    4. ______________
    5. etc

    Please feel in the blanks

    MY PLAN:

    I am going to get:

    1. 2 computers
    2. 2 net cards
    3. 1 business phone
    4. Small amount of clothes/needs
    5. Join Hotel/AAA discount plan for extended stay vacations
    6. Vacation rentals
    7. Hotels (not a lot)
    8. Common sense
    9. My BH[W] fam bam

I do a bit of this now, actually, you wouldn't guess where I am at even if you had my personal info.

So, what is the collective thought process on "keeping it moving" ? How many of you keep it moving, I HAVE A HOME but I want to go on a TOUR and start to meet you guys and the rest of the world.

I was thinking about that, but I that would only be for part of the "trip." I don't necessarily want to live out of a motor home. I do want to know what I need for complete mobility. Planes, trains and automobiles

    Yeah I have done this,
Went all over Panama, Guatemala and Costa Rica while 'working'
My tip is travel light, and dont shell out too much cash on gadgets. Because they are bound to get stolen sooner or later. Also do regular backups onto a USB flash drive and either mail it home or stash it somewhere. Real CIA style stuff!

I've been doing this for a while now. Last year I spent 10 months traveling around Mexico and in a couple weeks I leave on a year-long sailing trip down the Pacific Coast of the Americas.

To run my business I have:

An Asus EEEPC (Big enough to work on, small enough to not hate)

    That's it, that's all I need.

For convenience I have a thumb drive in case I need to print something and for personal use I have a cheap-o phone with a local sim card so I can text local friends and a 500GB external HD with a butt-load of movies, books, music.

Other than that I have my clothes (which all fit into a single carry-on size backpack) and my camera.

Go light, you won't regret it. There is 0 need for 2 laptops. Back up regularly and if the one you have dies, buy a new one. This will only not work if you are deep in the bush in which case you won't be able to use your laptop anyway.

Leave the phone behind and use skype. Leave the netcards. Forget about 5, 6 and 7. Stay at hostels and couchsurf.

It's a great lifestyle but it's not for everyone. I'm a bit older than you probably (just turned 36) and I tend to stay in one place for weeks (and sometimes months) at a time rather than moving constantly but that's because this is my LIFE, not my vacation.

Go for it. Have fun. If you have any specific questions, feel free to ask.

Thanks for posting this CLthis, I have been meaning to make a post similar to this, with similar questions. I am definitely with you on this one.

    Are you in the US?

    Keep the suggestions coming guys.

I think the biggest cost would be hotels and finding places to stay...

Check out couchsurfing.com and stay at hostels. Not only are they cheap, they're a great way to meet other people. I averaged about $500 US/month in mexico and could have easily shaved another $100/month off had I not eaten out so much and had so many drinks.

Thanks man. Thats exactly the kinda thing I had in mind. That site is bad ass. Have you used it successfully? For how long?

$500 living expenses traveling through mexico? Or even $400, I think I'll have the good food and drinks though and spend the extra $100/month

How about traveling in the USA?
    How much per month?

I'm also interested in Argentina, anywhere in the Caribbean, and All of Europe
If you have in advice and/or monthly cost info on those....

@Vette09 How many years have you been a "traveling IMer"??

    You have any suggested reading/videos?

    Thanks for your help,

I've used couchsurfing successfully several times and have made several good friends and connections through it. I highly recommend it. You can find me there as vagabondette74. If you're going to use it I'd suggest signing up now and starting to connect with people so you can get a couple references. It helps your chances of being able to surf.

Traveling in the USA would be at least double and much more challenging due to size and lack of public transport. For example, the most I ever paid for a hostel in Mexico was $8.50 a night and that was a private room and included breakfast. When I came back to the states I stayed at the one on Portland and it was $20/night (which was my entire daily budget in mexico). This is one reason I don't travel in the US much any more. Plus, getting around without a car is a major PITA in most areas though I've used CL rideshare with success a couple times (from Chicago -> New York and Phoenix -> San Diego)

Argentina is supposed to be amazing but I've heard that it can be $$ if you want to be in a city - but I've not been there so I can't really say. Hopefully next year. The Carib you again run into transport costs that can be $$ unless you have some boating (sailing) skills that you can barter for transport.

Europe depends. Western Europe you can expect to pay at least as much as most of the US, and more in many places. Southern Europe tends to be cheaper than northern but has gotten more expensive since the Euro. Eastern Europe (basically anything not on the Euro, Franc, or Pound) can be pretty cheap though the really touristy cities (i.e. Prague) are getting more expensive.

Advantages to Europe are that it's *very* easy to get around via train, bus and cheap flights. Many people speak English (though I strongly recommend you learn at least some of the nice words). It's a good entry into traveling as you still have easy access to the same comforts you'd have at home so the transition is easier.

The main disadvantage is the visa. Most of Europe is part of the Schengen Agreement which means you can only spend I think 90 days there at a time and then you have to leave Europe for a while. You'll want to double check the timeframes as I had a visa when I was there so I didn't have to worry about it. It makes traveling easier because you don't have to worry about border checkpoints as much (though you don't get stamped any more ) but 90 days really isn't all that long.

I lived in Geneva for a year and loved it. I'd love to live in Europe again but between the visa issues and the cost it's not an option right now - I'm a cheapo.

I've only been an IMer for a year but I've been a traveler for a whlie. My first international trip was in 2001 when I moved to Europe. Since then I've been back almost every year. I also travel a lot domestically (I've been in 8 states in the last 10 weeks) and I move cross country every 1-3 years. I started traveling full time a little over a year ago. Sold 90% of my crap, put the important stuff in storage and headed out. Haven't looked back.

Not sure about reading materials, but I've found the bootsnall forums to be great for info/advice. There are a couple books but none that I've read personally. Go to the travel section of your local Borders and browse for a while.

Good luck, sorry for the long-ass post.

Can't vouch for a fleshlight as that's not my bag, but from experience, though it can be embarrassing ("why is your bag buzzing?") most adult 'toys' will go through customs with no problems. I don't recommend them when coming back from Amsterdam though as they search much more thoroughly on those flights and, well, let's just say that people were blushing....

I'd take one older model laptop and have a remote backup like Carbonite (paid) or skydrive (free) and, very important, an adapter.

Toys are useful on the road to help with the sometimes lonely life. Just one more electronic gadget, surely someone has made one to look like a computer part? If not, I know they make one that looks like lipstick . Failing that as you sit in the room alone you can google home made versions. Order tomatoes lol. Anyway, as long as you have a cc then somebody will be available to you.

Also handy for the suspicious or dominant partner (although not applicable to you yet) there are those male chastity belts that pass through customs easily since they are made of polymer. Maybe you should take one to test it out? Bet they have a great affiliate program.

Here's a great book on the subject of traveling light (and cheap) but the light part is what worked for me. The books a bit dated but there's still some worthwhile tips in there. Art and Adventure of Traveling Cheaply by Rick Berg

Used the tips in it to hitchhike from England into central Germany. What a great experience with nothing more than the clothes on my back, some bread & cheese and a toothbrush.

These days I take summers off and travel around a bit but keep most all my productivity needs on a flash drive with all kinds of portable apps and 1 laptop but my flash drive is the core of my absentee functionality. The apps you choose really depend on your style of IMing.

    Much success in your travels.

    yea traveling's great

i lived in 5 different cities this past year lol

don't forget to pack a good gps so u can find your way around new places

its also helpful to open a ups mailbox for all your physical mail and to use as your official permanent address

also make sure you backup all your important stuff in online storage just in case you lose something along the way

i never leave home without my netbook - i have a dell mini 10 with Solid state drive so no moving parts great battery life and 16gb SD card for backup... trust me always back up! lol

a netbook as an accompaniment to a laptop is great - laptops can sometimes be cumbersome!

i would say a flip hd camera too to record your trip!

oh and a Logitech VX Revolution mouse if you can still find one! Best mouse ive ever had! Even Better than the my trusty Logitech Laser MX1000!

I honestly think if you had $2000/m on auto or semi auto you'd be good. Find a couple hours out of the day to work, then go enjoy the locals...

also make sure you backup all your important stuff in online storage just in case you lose something along the way

I was gonna say GPS too. Good call

Also, good tip about the ups mailbox, do they have a lot spread accross the world where you can pick it up, or do they deliver like regular UPS to wherever you may be at the time?

What is a reliable & SAFE online storage option. Storing sensitive data on their always creeped me out...

@ukescuba Iwas gonna say a flip camera too. I was weighing the merits of a netbook VS. getting an Iphone. Iphone is obviously smaller, then you could just add your regular laptop w/ the iphone. More mobility...

I dunno, never really used an Iphone so i dont know how functional they are for "traveling IM"

I have seen special travel chargers for all the gizmos we are listing, better throw one of those in as well.

I saw this book a few months back, never read it though. "Vanabode happily camp, travel and live forever on $20 a day"
    Code:
    http://www.amazon.com/Vanabode-happily-travel-forever-ebook/dp/B0030GG2KS/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1266901919&sr=8-1
he basically outlines how to travel the USA for $20 a day out of a VAN and sleeping in the Van, camping at Nation Parks, ect... but still showering & and sleeping well and keeping civil so to speak.

**I looked at the link from Amazon after I posted, I thought this was relevant info regarding the book (especially here at bhw).

"For those that don't have any savings or retirement income I include a list of more than 30 legitimate easy ways to earn money while traveling all over the country."

I doubt he has anything better than IM/BH on a laptop, but I could be wrong.

A lot of people do mexico because:

1 - it's in the same time zones as the US so it makes keeping up with US friends/family/business easier.
2 - it's a quick and cheap flight to/from most areas. My flights from DC -> Cancun were about $100 one way which makes getting to/from easy.
3 - the language/culture barrier isn't as huge as with some countries (i.e. Thailand) so it's a good stepping stone to being an expat without huge culture shock.
4 - you can live a lifestyle very similar to that of the US for a fraction of the price. My apartment in SC was $300/month and included all utilities, high speed wireless, water, etc. It was a brand new 1-br loft in a great location. My similar apartment in DC cost over $1k/month and didn't include anything.

Traveling in the US will likely be substantially more expensive than traveling in most other places in the world.

On $2k/month you could live comfortably in 99% of the world. You could live like a king in about 95%. I personally prefer to live closer to a local lifestyle and I like traveling places where I get the most bang for my buck... That's code for I'm a cheap ass.

I think I am on your level with that one. I just don't want to feel the guilt of paying some ridiculous amount of money, because its the atmosphere I want to enjoy.

I need the money for cool things when I finally slow down...or never slow down and just scale up life style in the future.

The main issue you'll run into, how can you cashout your earnings? Obviously paypal to a bank account is rather easy, but when it comes down to checks? How can you get one of them sent to you, if your constantly moving around?

$2k is less than 1.500€, you won't live like a king with that in Europe lol
You can have a good life with that in Argentina.

I don't really deal in checks so I never thought of that. There is a mailing advice from someone above, postal boxes can be forwarded anywhere too.

Also, can't checks just be turned into direct deposits or have a trustee ($more money$) receive, deposit, and you view reports

Nice thread! This is something that I've always wanted to do.

Back in my poker days, me and a buddy were going to move to thailand for a few months, but we never did. Lately, I've been thinking about doing South America this summer. There are still a couple of places I need to visit stateside to catch up with some friends to start my trio-- NYC, Boston, San Jose then bolt to South America for a month.

you can find a 2-3 bedroom for 100/month. 1 bedroom for $50+ a month. You can live there with less than $300 a month all together and the food is great. born and raised there and I go back twice a year it is great. Also if you want a place by the beach $250-$400 a month, my fam owns a lot of real state in the DR so my prices are accurate. the people are nice, some speak english and they will treat you like a god (no joke). food is very cheap you can eat 3 times in one day with less than $2 USD. You can buy 5 beers with $1 USD and pussy is cheap too (I heard) lol but if you look american you will most likely get it for free.

Keep telling yourself that 2k will let you live lile a king. Then you visit Norway with 2k month, you would live worse than poor srudents with a loan, most likely in a max 16 square meter apartememt

I didn't realize that Norway was the only place in the world. Or did you miss the part where I said 95% which would mean that there are some places where $2k would not be adequate?

Which would be why I didn't say you could live ANYWHERE IN THE WORLD for that amount and live like a king. Jeez - people really can't read can they?

BTW - there are MANY places you can live in Europe comfortably for that amount. Maybe not in a big city but certainly nearby. I've done it and I have friends who have done it.

Hm. If you want to PM me, that works. A ticket would not be a bad deal for prices like that. NOT going to make any instant choices but that is enticing, like Costa Rica

My mom gets my mail for the few places that have to send live checks. Then she just deposits them to me. I would not want to try to get mail while traveling unless you're staying somewhere in the very developed world or using a trackable service.

When I lived in Geneva I had no problem getting mail. When I lived in mexico, the only way I would get something is if it came UPS or FedEx.

It all depends on what you are looking for. Santo Domingo And Santiago are best for the crazy partying and night life. Samana and Punta Cana have the best beaches. If you want night life and beach together than Santo Domingo is probably what you are looking for. Nightlife is crazy around Zona Colonial (colonial zone) in Santo Domingo. There is also Boca Chica, the beaches are amazing there and the night life is absolutely crazy. Also Santiago is crazy, the nightlife there is great specially around El Monumento (the monument, it is crazy at night time, you can barely walk because of all the people during the weekend) and Ambis is a pretty good club in Santiago.

Are these prices the same through all of DR? Like accurate for all the places you list/talk about in your post after this one....

    $2 a day for 3 meals!? DAMN!!

So $300 to $500 a month would be enough in the DR, huh?

Why do they treat Americans like GODS there? That's obviously a plus, since a lot of the world doesn't like us at all.

I'm with playercool, You do make DR sounds hella cool. You may have just edged Argentina with your post
I'm pretty sure Argentina cant compete with those prices. BUT I still really wanna go there.

It's cool to see others on here wanna go to the same places as me, maybe I'll cross paths with some of you in my travels.

Man I shoulda made this thread a month ago when I thought of it. Good info here.

Props to CLthis (again) for posting this.
@CLThis I think Costa Rica is pretty expensive these days, because of the boom in real estate they had w/ the babyboomers retiring and such. I could be wrong.

I'm with you on the experience thing. That is what I am looking for, EXPERIENCES, also increasing the buying power of the dollar.

I would like to revive this with a few more questions and more input from those who missed it:

    1. If you are travelling internationally, what can you do about health care/emergencies/etc?
    2. Anyone use travelling to stay in a place for a small time and get dual citizenship somewhere and where is the easiest and best place to get it?
    3. Also, where would you work, best environment? I guess this depends on where you are.
    4. Stay at: furnished short term (3-6 month) rentals, hostels, hotels?
    5. Receiving goods? How do you get received items, like clothes you order online or something. Or replacement computer parts

I am starting to put together a very clear list of what I need. For US travel it is much easier since my health care and cell phone stretch over the states and don't change regardless of where I am. Most dramatic time change is 3 hours and that would be a better change anyway, seeing how it would be 3 hours earlier as I am on the West Coast and waking up later than everyone in the world already.

Probably one of the better threads I have ever seen here, lets keep it moving

1 - I haven't had insurance since 2005 whether in or out of the US so it's not a big deal for me. I do have a DAN membership (diversassistancenetwork.org) that is $70/year and includes evac coverage just in case. But travelers insurance? nope. In most places, you can get similar level of medical care for a fraction of the cost. Examples:

    - I recently went to mexico to have a crown replaced. Cost in US: $900. Cost in Mexico: $150
    - I got sick while I was traveling. Cost for house call by doctor and meds: $25
    - I have on prescription that I fill every couple months. Cost in US: $70/fill + doctor visit each year. Cost in mexico: $5

2 - I have contemplated getting dual citizenship but generally you have to buy it (expensive), marry it or live there for years. So, unless you can get an ancestor citizenship then it's likely not worth it. If I decide to do it, I'll marry one of my Mexican friends and get it that way - it's easy.

3 - Depends on you. I work in parks, coffee shops, my apartment, hostels, etc.

4 - I've done all of them. Depends on how long I stay somewhere. Generally I don't often stay in hotels though because not only are they significantly more expensive, they often have fewer traveler amenities that I like (free wifi, kitchen, common area, etc.) and it's much harder to meet people.

5 - Everything I own fits into a single backpack and, if you're traveling, you'll likely prefer going light so don't plan on doing much shopping. If you MUST shop, shop local. If you MUST shop on the internet, use FedEx or some similar option though note many places won't ship internationally.
