I have seen people sharing lists of sites to ping, and I was wondering what this is all about.

Is it blackhat? Or whitehat?

Pinging is basically automated traffic generation.There will not be actual visitors but pinging will refresh your pages as if somebody visited you.

Pinging basically sends small chunks of your blog posts to blog submission sites that updates whenever you create or delete a post. It directs new visitors to your blog posts if you do it right.

Pinging tells the search engines you have something new to index.

It helps to get your pages indexed quickly basically.
