Hi,

I've been getting a lot of junk comments on a couple of my blogs, presumably using a Scrapebox type tool. I've added a plugin which adds a captcha, but there are still comments getting through (although not as many).

It's a pain having to delete all the spam comments, I can't just delete all because there are some genuine ones too. What's the best way to prevent these spam comments? Is there a good plugin?

I've been using Disqus Comment plugin on WordPress. So far, so good. I haven't received any spam comments for 2 straight years.

Here's a link and quote from a thread I created in November of 2014 about preventing comment spam on Wordpress. You can try using this method if you notice that the spam comments are using very specific keywords (e.g., Louis Vuitton Handbags).

This is a short and simple guide for those of you who are looking to filter spam on a Wordpress website without using a plugin. I've been using this feature for about a month with one of my websites and I went from getting hundreds of spam comments each days when I first started using it to only 1 or 2 (sometimes none at all!).

How To Filter Wordpress Spam Without A Plugin In 6 Easy Steps

Log in to your Wordpress dashboard
Go to your settings
Go To "Discussion"
Scroll down until you see "Comment Blacklist"
Enter the words that frequently appear in your comments (make sure they aren't common words like "hello").
Save your changes

If you're wondering what you should use in your comment blacklist, here are some words that would frequently appear in the spam comments that I used to receive:

It will not prevent every spam comment from getting through, but it makes managing spam without a plugin much easier if you do not like having too many plugins on your website.

Have you tried Akismet? It's pretty good. And as said above - install Disqus, which makes it hard for commenters to post. The only down side - some real visitors might be discouraged to leave comments (anonymity and/or privacy issues).

Thanks, just installed it and it looks good.

Thanks, couldn't help but laugh at my niche being in your list of blocked words ;)

That's funny! Some of the keywords in that list, such as Dre, are only irrelevant on my website that uses the comment blacklist since I highly doubt I will ever create a post about Dr. Dre.

Look at the IPs of the comments. Chances are you're going to find the same 40-50 subnet's over and over, at most. If it's just 1 person person doing it, you'll probably only find 15 or 20. If the person doing it is smart they're using proxies, but most aren't going to pay that much probably, so you'll only be dealing with someone who has a subscription to 500 proxies at most. More than likely, it'll be just 1 or 2 people who have like 50 or 100 proxies each, and you should be able to easily see the pattern of subnet's from their proxies so you can block them. That's a more general approach as I'm not very knowledgeable with Wordpress, but there might even be some sort of plug-in that could do this, otherwise do it through .htaccess.
