What is pinging?

I know about using ping in cmd but thats about it. How does it apply to wordpress in allowing posts to be pinged? Also what about technorati allowing your blog to be pingged? Basically what does pinging mean and how would it help my blog? Thanks for any contributions.

Thanks, I read that and from what I understand it just notifies certain servers when a new post is added. So its best to enable pinging for all options?
