The only safest way is to buy it. If you use it on a real business / corp site, I wouldn't risk using unpaid plugins or anything unpaid for.

You are right. Better safe than sorry I guess..

With that in mind, what plugin were you looking for? I collect plugins and have purchased developer versions of just about all the useful ones.

I prefer searching for reviews. If the plugin is question is popular and haves good reviews I trust it 100% - oh yeah and I download it only from wordpress org
