Would like to know if this is a good idea.

I have a domain name that doesn't relate to any specific subject. I was wondering whether or not you would considerate it a good idea to make a blog and have each post be a different subject, or a different niche. Logically does this make sense? I am just starting to dip my toes in the water so let me know! :itsme:

Also I do have the option of unlimited sub-domains

Many blogs today operate in a situation like that. In my opinion, having an EMD (exact match domain, e.g. hotfurryboots.com for the keyword hot furry boots) is just a bonus for SEO pruposes.

If your on site and off site SEO are still on point, you will still be competitive. However, an EMD will give you a little more of an advantage. It is not a necessity though.
 
what if you write on articles and then buy an EMD and link it to your article.. does it still give you juice.. or will google penalize you for that?
 
Agreed. If it's an easy-to-remember name then this is also a huge advantage if you consider offline marketing
 
There are plenty of blogs out there that write on a variety of subjects without a domain name that relates to anything in particular. Many of them have PR's of 3,4 or 5 and are able to sell plenty of adverts. Just depends on what you are trying to do.

What sort of content do these sites provide? How vast is their range of topics?

So just to clarify. I wouldn't necessarily be wasting my time if I made a blog with no general category but rather with each post pertaining to a different niche topic?

Or would it make more sense if I created a sub-domain with a entire separate blog for each niche topic?

I think if you're doing just one post on a niche, then go with just a single post. But if you plan to do more than that, make a subdomain for each niche.

Domain.com/health

Domain.com/games

etc.
 
I am not in favor of sub-domains for each topics. First of all, you should take decision about topics that you can cover up in your blog post. It may be 10-20 and then you should list these topics as category in your blog. Now, you are ready for create different niche blog post and listed them in relative category.
 
This is the current trend as stated above..... with the current fractuating change of intetests you have to be well equiped to move with the market demand

Sounds like we're in a stock trading forum :)

But yeah many people have built successful sites that don't focus on a particular niche. IMO this seems as though it would be harder to do though then just concentrating on one thing.
