Email collection widget?

Whats the best way to collect emails if you're not selling a product? Are there widgets we can use to put in the sidebar so people can subscribe for updates and new posts?

Also I see on some sites in the middle or end of their post they have a button that says "Get Updates" and a little field for entering their email.
