Default Godaddy "website tonight"--->switch to Wordpress.

    So,

I have a friend who runs a local newspaper. Actually he has 4 separate print editions each targeted towards a particular suburb of Boston.

I have been telling him how great Wordpress is blah blah.. and he finally agreed to let me migrate him to WP from whatever the fuck he has with godaddy now.

My idea was to give him 4 separate WP builds 3 running on sub domains and one on the main domain each for the particular newspaper.. I made a mock up of what i thought he should do on one of my throw away domains and he liked it. Plan was a go but instead of hosting with me on my VPS he wanted to stay with godaddy and just install WP on that hosting account. He is worried that he may miss 1 email.. apparently in the news industry 1 email could be a big deal.

So he gives me his login info to godaddy. I go in looking for cpanel access and ftp login fantastico..something normal. NOTHING.

Apparently buying "website tonight" from godaddy is like renting a house that comes with a butler. The butler does everything needed to run the house but if you want to make any changes to the house like..say repainting the house you have to move to a new house rather than just painting it?

Anyone have any other ideas what I could do here.. I can move him to my own hosting account and have the whole thing set up and running by the time the sun comes up here ( if DNS from GOdaddy propagates at normal speed) but if I change the DNS it fucks his email right?

Is there anything I can do such as maybe.. something with an mx record or some shit so his email stays the same way it is now without any need to adjust the configuration of his outlook account or whatever he has going now?

Any idea would be appreciated.. a small project is becoming a pain in the ass.

Look and see if you can redirect his email account at Godaddy. I'm not sure if this is possible, but might be an alternative.

Just thought of something else. It's early so.....

Say his email is editor@bostonnews.com. That email is tied to the .com site right? The way I understand it that email account would stay static even if you change the name servers. Doesn't the name server just point traffic to a location?

Yes apparently if I change the nameservers on godaddy i can do something with the mx record so the email still routes through godaddy the way it is now.

I have just put in a support ticket request with my hosting company hostwinds to ask how to do this.. I am sure they will get me sorted but if anyone knows how in the mean time please lemme know.

Godaddy doesnt work on Cpanel and that is why you find it fucking hard to go through it. They got a shit UI and believe me it isnt that good.

Talking about the nameserver change, believe me dont do that. I had to do that for a client, and his site was down for over a day. (He asked me to change it. So I am safe.) And it was still not done.

If you change your nameservers, the emails arent going to work. So what I suggest you now is to get it all going in Godaddy. If you want any help from me, let me know.

LOL I have never seen it say "banned" in blue before? So I should ask Godaddy to change his plan to just a normal economy hosting account and load WP there and build it all there? I am told that WP runs very slow on Godaddy? Is that true? You sure DNS change with MX is not a better solution?

When you change the DNS, the MX entries must be set in the new host. So if the nameservers arent propagated yet, the MX change in the new host is just like doing something which doesnt have any action.

Yeah, Install WP there and work on the site. Thats the best thing to do, if you want your emails all the time. I bet.

And Yeah, I am banned damn it

Here's a pretty good guide to switching hosts with minimal or no downtime, and a lot of the advice could apply to switching accounts or type of service @ the same host:

    http://www.hostgator.com/moving.shtml

WP does not necessarily run slow on GD, some of your performance there will depend on the level of hosting you have and some of it will depend on whether the server you are on is fucked at the moment or not. They have a shit tonne of servers, and their hosting isn't the best, and they do things in non-standard ways (hence no cpanel etc.) and they do things to get their hooks into you as much as possible (hence the email being tied in).

7.Once your DNS changes have been made, you will need to wait 48 hours (two days) before your site will load from the new host. During this 48 hour period, your DNS is propagating world wide and your site will be randomly loading from either the old host or the new host. Once the two days is complete, your site will only be loading from the new host.

2 days of downtime. They say the site loads either from old or new host, but I bet, it doesnt. I have experienced it myself, trying to move my clients site from Godaddy to some other hosting.

My hosting and I bet many others updates the nameservers instantly, but Godaddy and some of those big ones doesnt.

Propagation time has nothing to do with the registrar or the hoster, a lot of it comes down to the registry - for example dot com's usually propagate worldwide in a few hours at most, while some other TLD's can take 1-2 days for full propagation.

Website Tonight is Godaddy's all-in-one website builder - it's not a hosting plan. Your client's current site is likely built using a website tonight template and the WYSIWYG interface, so the only way to migrate it is to extract the content and move it to the new host. If you were hoping for something to run on auto you're shit out of luck. As for the email you can point his domains elsewhere and the mail will still route to secureserver.net unless you change it manually. He can continue to use their shitty webmail or you can CC a copy out to gmail or w/e.

I think this guys issue was that he is the local political reporter and I am involved in local politics so he was scared to death I would somehow gain access to his emails. I won't lie it did cross my mind but.. I think I lack the required technical skills to do so.

Ok I put in the hostwinds.com dns info on the godaddy portal.. now I just wait and set up the WP sites in the mean time.

Fuck. Fuck. Fuck. As far as I can tell DNS did update properly as the new web pages are now displaying.

I input the MX record exactly as instructed and the mail is still bouncing back at me.. this sucks. Any ideas? I called godaddy back and they said "it may just take time"

What if I add a catch all for now also?

This sounds like the right setting though right?

    Remote Mail Exchanger less »
Configure server to not accept mail locally and send mail to the lowest MX record.

And then add the MX routes and values in the boxes below? Anyone a cpanel nerd?

After all this it is still not working. Thankfully the guy owns an @comcast address so I am routing all incoming mail to his comcast address.

After a 15 minute conversation with Godaddy just now I find out that they never had their email routing through Godaddy. It was routing to outlook somehow? Part of the problem I am having here is I never ever set up individual emails for the domains I own. I simply set a catch all and route all the incoming mail to my Gmail address and set Gmail so I can write back from that address.

Maybe after this I'l start using some kind of desktop program for all my email?

Can anyone tell me a simple way to reconnect all their emails to my server? Is there like one setting in their outlook that needs to be changed to unfuck everything?

So.. not wanting this guy to be without email on a Monday morning I switched the nameservers back to the godaddy nameservers and it seems to have unfucked the email issue. I can keep building his new WP site on the IP and switch back the DNS when I am done. In the mean time I'll need to figure out how to connect his desktop app to my cpanel. Now that the DNS is switched back to godaddy I see this under DNS

    DNS Manager: Available
    A @ 208.109.1.xx.xxx A portal 75.147.61.225 CNAME email portal.advocatenews.net CNAME ftp @ CNAME imap imap.xxxxxxxx.net MX @ portal.xxxxxxxxxx.net MX @ smtp.xxxxxxxxxxx.net
Where you see X I redacted the info. Any help is appreciated.

I help people switch servers all the time. The best thing to do, IMO, is to set him up with a POP3 account on Outlook so it will download all his messages and have him keep it open so it's constantly downloading any new messages.

Once that's done, set up his email address(es) on your server, then, as long as the passwords are the same, the email will come in and so long as the POP and SMTP settings are the same (which they almost always are) there shouldn't be any interruption.

So as it turns out this is how his email runs now

Someone created a subdomain in the godaddy account called www.portal.hisdomainname.net they then changed the a record of that domain to the ip of his mail server which I think is a dedicated IP from comcast.

They then set his MX to portal.hisdomainname.net

Kind of a backward fucking way to be doing things but if it works it works.

What I did to get this all working was added the domain to my hosting account giving it it's own cpanel. In that Cpanel I created all the subdomains I needed to build 4 wp sites on those subdomains

I then went to the godaddy account and changed the A record for his domain to the IP address of my VPS. I then created the 4 subdomains there and changed the A record for those also..

So far it is working and if it works it works.. again this was definitely a backward fucking way to do things..

It gets better.. I have all 4 sites up and running fine. he has a twitter and FB plugin.. so one of the last things on the todo list was to have him send me over his exported contacts list for each of his 3 emails..
Turns out that subdomain conencts to microsoft exchange on his server and the guy who set it up is long fucking gone.

To get the global contacts list from exchange you need motherfucking command line access?
