Think this will work?

Back in the day I backed up some websites on the internet. I was looking through the backups and I noticed that those original sites are no longer online (owner let the domain expire). I did some quote searches from the articles in the backup on google and noticed it returned no matches which means the articles are unique.

Do you think I could place these articles on my blog without penalty?

I think so.. I would try that if I were you. Congrats, you just found unique and actually readable contents!

Add it: You may still have to check the copyright issue though..

I'm not too worried about the copyright, if the copyright holder gets mad or something they'll just email me and tell me to take it down, which I will.

The websites I backed up were just some old game database websites. I copied them so i could read them at school (I couldn't go directly to the sites since the teacher would find out).

Go for it! If anyone takes offense they will contact you and give you a chance to stop.
