Federated Media is owned by John Battelle, he was a co-founding editor of Wired magazine. Anyone whos been around IM for a few years would know he wouldn't be putting out bullshit figures.

popurls is great execution of a simple idea that most people would laugh at... Scrap news headlines & run cpm ads

That's very large scale autoblogging LOL...but it requires a lot of resources too. But I think further, this is not the biggest autoblog in the Web - I think some of Google sites are autoblogs/autowebsites too - I mean, what is Google News if not an automated news scraping website :P

    You would need his connections to get $28cpm . . . .

Most guys here will never reach that premium for ad sales.

Actually you just need traffic, a shit load of quality traffic. Once you break thru the 1 million UV/ Month [33,000UV/day] you get into the premium CPM rates. Fed media is just one of a few premium cpm networks.

Or for example, if you had finanical industry type autoblogs you can run a openX adserver & sell your own ads for premium rates & cut out the 50+% the cpm network is stealing. Its not hard to get $10-30CPM in the financial services, if you have the traffic.

There are quite a few celb autoblogs getting these CPM rates & traffic [just a bit under], but you have to have the traffic. Porn traffic trading systems & autoblogs are a killer compo.

And if one of us built such a site, we couldn't built it that large that fast. He's the ex editor of WIRED...think he's got connections?

This Internet marketing game is very counter intuitive. If I had just come across that blog I would have said it was a blog somebody spent 10 mins creating and then got sidetracked and never got back to finishing it.

    But $40k+/month? jeez louise!

Yeah he probably is making that much with a site like that but it's kinda dumb to use it as an example of something attainable in this day for a non-name person to achieve at least with an autoblog.

There are many valuable websites that use copied content. It's all about how you do it, from where, and the ratio of copied to unique.

There are many variables involved in doing this right.

Here are some of my tips:

    1. I do not use feeds for my blogs.
    2. I follow hot trends.
    3. I utilize social networks to their fullest.
    4. I get content from sites that are not top tier, and where the content has already been either spun or unique. You can beat the source blogs in search engine rankings if the popularity of your site is higher. I prove this time and time again.

Hot trends are key, and play well with social networks. The creating 100 auto blogs, then leaving them to allow organic search to catch up in hopes to earning a dollar a day are over. It is over saturated. Sure there are many that are still doing it, and it can work but your spreading yourself too thin. Everybody can continue to fight each other over being the on the first page of G, while I continue to exploit social networks to the max.

Excellent points. Now if you also look, none have any type of keywords in the domain name. It just goes to show you what can be done with an idea and some creative marketing.... and time. I would be willing to bet most wouldn't even think that this sites would of amount to any type of popularity that they are to day.
