Need some computer help from computer savvy people
I'm not sure if this is in the right section but I don't know where else to put it..
So I'm not to smart when it comes to the guts of computers.. like hardware, graphics, ect..
I need to know what I can do or add to my computer to make it run software programs faster. Like FriendBlasterPro for example. If I run that program by it self it will work just fine usually. But I need to run 3 of them on my computer at once. When I try and do this all 3 of them run very slow.
So what can I get or add to my computer to be able to run 3 programs like this at once without slowing them down much?
Thanks for all the help!

To help me on my slow ass computer, I usually switch off unnecessary processes this speeds it up a little, not loads but it helps.

Re: Need some computer help from computer savvy people
You could probably go VPS and have two VPS accounts running the program you want.
But its possible depending on your host..that you could get banned maybe.. I dont know what you are doing would be considered spamming... not too sure check their TOS

Thanks for the answers guys..
So basically it sounds like I need a better processor and more RAM.
I'll look into it.

Whatever. People, these are relatively uneducated or un-thought through responses. No offence, but first off, OP, you should be telling us what is in your computer already. You will never get a good or anywhere near accurate response with that post.
Secondly, if you are having problems running programs of that nature, it is could be a couple of things and the processor is the last thing you should be worried about.
In terms of hardware needed to multitask it is ALWAYS ram first. ALWAYS.
Yes you could kill some unneeded programs and keeping your taskbar clean of resource hogging programs is always a good idea, but even that is addressing the issue of how much system ram is available to run applications. Again, it is ram first.
Another bottle neck could be your connection speed if it is that you are running three types of programs that basically mass spam a single website.
Again, unless I know more, I can't tell you more. What are your system specs? Tell me that and I could probably tell you EXACTLY what it is that you need to do.
I am no guru, but I have been building and working on comps since I was 13 and I have had more than one paid position as a computer tech. I just may be able to point you in the right direction.

Hey man I know you have way more knowledge than all of us 100% for sure when it comes to computer hardware but did you ever think we were giving the probable fixes to his problem?
I'm sure every person in this thread could tell him his exact problem if he posted his specs, but he didn't so we gave him the probable answers.
Get off your throne and get back down to earth. You're in a forum where people use computers to fuel their life.

I'm running a 6200 series Averatec lap top. 512 MB DDR, 60 GB HD.. thats all I really know about it. What else you need to know?
How can I figure out how much RAM I currently have?

you have 512 mb RAM. that's what the DDR is. That's very little these days. Most comps are running at least 2gb now.

Re: Need some computer help from computer savvy people
If you do not want to spend cash right now, You can try setting you Performance Options to "Adjust for best performance", this will remove all the visual bells and whistles that you don't really need.
Also you can try moving your page file to a physical hard drive separate from your OS (if you have one). Sounds complicated but it's not really.
Depending on that OS your running there are a whole ton of little tweaks that you can do to increase your performance. Try googling "xp performance tweaks" or "vista performance tweaks" or whatever you are running.

You already posted how much ram you have. Now the question is what type of ddr ram you are using. A quick google search brings me to http://reviews.cnet.com/laptops/aver...tag=mncol;rnav which says you need PC2700. OK.
Since you have a laptop, the only thing you can upgrade is the RAM. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16820231141 tada! there you have it. you can google instructions on how to replace your laptop's RAM, there are even plenty of youtube videos.

You are still running XP and not Vista right? Also, what kind of connection are you running?
-

Re: Need some computer help from computer savvy people
i'd hope he wasnt running vista with only 512 MB of ram. Though What everyone has said is correct. You dont have enough ram (Active memory), So your computer has to create a (Page File) on the hardrive to make up for lack of ram and access time To the hardrive is much slower than it is to the ram. Hence the lagg. If you have the money best bet is just invest in a new computer since that one is a bit outdated. Other wise more ram should help you.

Exactly. If you are making any money off of what you are doing, you can easily turn it around and buy a new PC with better specs. If not and you are short on cash, just upgrade the RAM from the link I posted.

Re: Need some computer help from computer savvy people
Well, I guess so. Really, these days, computers are so cheap its not even funny. You will find HP, Dell and other big name companies selling comps for a few hundred that would blow away the best computer of a few years ago. In fact, any black hatter that is actually making money should be looking into some new gear because as soon as the economy starts to recover (it always does), comp companies are going to up the prices of everything.
I am saving up for an Alienware laptop that will not only do all of the work I need to do, but deal swift death at lan parties. And even Alienware has lowered their prices (in a huge way) to adjust to the economy.

Yeah a VPS would be the best way to go. Especially since you have a better connection with a VPS.

I cannot guarantee it tbh. I don't know what sort of garbage you have running in the background, or what kind of internet connection you have, but in a sweeping generalization that applies to most people, yes, it will increase how fast programs run. That ram chip will double your total ram. You will have to remove the old one, but it will give you 1 gigabye of memory, versus, 512 megabyes of memory. 1012 megabyes = 1 gigabye so there you go.
I would also hire the kid down the street to install it for you. I'm not certain that you fiddling around with your laptop is a good idea.

just a note: windows XP does not support anymore than 4 gigs of ram

You are right.. I want to get a new computer but I am trying to make money right now not spend it.
I only make about $20 a day right now and I'm trying to scale it up but I need a faster computer.. so I'm kinda stuck between a rock and a hard place.

Yeah dude, you should get straight with the memory upgrade, then when you get going you can make stacks and buy as many new PCs as you need.

Re: Need some computer help from computer savvy people
I wouldn't waste $$ upgrading that pc. Get a VPS like someone suggested. I know DP (gasp) has some really cheap deals. You can run your programs without it hogging all your system resources.
You could get a cheap desktop for about $400, custom built, that is decent. Take it into a mom and pop shop and get it built for like $30-50 labor.
Dual monitors and a good pc speed up production.

OP, don't get offended but I'm not even 1% sure he can pull something like that. No offense, it just looks like you need a little help.

Re: Need some computer help from computer savvy people
Also: Laptops are not quite like desktops in that they usually only accept half of the ram that the OS will take. I would not be surprised if that comp maxes out at 2 gigs of ram in a (2x1g) flavor. For real. No matter what Windows XP supports. but then again, 2 gigs is a whole hell of a lot when you are used to working with 512

Do you think that if I doubled my current RAM of 512 to 1 gig then I would see a big increase in the speed of my programs? Or would it not be a real big notice?
I've never really used anything higher then 512 so I wouldn't know..

Re: Need some computer help from computer savvy people
You would, but still, with prices the way they are, you may as well get 2 new gig sticks because adding 2 gigs is what is going to help the most. Besides, unless you have one slot for ram, the ods are you are getting your 512 from two sticks of 256. You may as well replace them both..
But yes, you would notice a difference just going from 512 to 1 gig.

Re: Need some computer help from computer savvy people
I'd say you're due and have been due for another computer, though if you don't have a budget make do with what you have.. You can build a tiptop computer for 300-400.
I would look over you're current specs using cpuz.. You might be able to not only jump 2gb, but might support faster pc speeds.

He might not even have 2 pc2700 slots in this laptop D:

Re: Need some computer help from computer savvy people
The problem with a laptop is the hard drive. The 2.5" drives only run at 5400 rpm compared to the 3.5" drives that comes with a desktop they run at 7200 rpm. If the program your running is disk intensive then this would be another bottle neck to your system.. but more ram would definitely help
-
-
Re: Need some computer help from computer savvy people
I forgot to mention, you should also check the website of your laptop manufacturer and find the spec.. as I recall not all laptops can accept 2gb.. I would find the specs first, other wise you might get a lot of bsd when you install 2gb into your system..

Re: Need some computer help from computer savvy people
My BEST recommendation:
Build/Buy a good desktop and run all your programs on it - Install Windows XP Professional on this desktop.
Build/Buy your internet/email/work desktop and install nothing other than anti-virus, Firefox, and other basic necessities like Thunderbird.
PS: Windows XP actually maxes at 3 GB of RAM.

Re: Need some computer help from computer savvy people
get 3 computers, problem solved

-
Re: Need some computer help from computer savvy people
you can use your laptop to remote desktop into the 3 computers, or just buy a kvm switch
